I tried not to freak out too much last week because I assumed most people were on vacation the week between Christmas and New Years. Now it's Friday of the first week back and I'm starting to get nervous...Ahh! I'm sick of not sleeping because of anxiety  who else feels this way?

Anyone else terrified that invites from your programs already went out and none of the invitees are on grad cafe so they never uploaded their results??

Don't lose hope! Try your best to find something to distract you during this waiting period. It's early January, and a lot of schools may have taken a long break due to the way the holidays fell this year.

I'm familiar with Uli and replication issues generally. I don't respect how he decided to rank everything from people to programs to journals, with the implication that there's something sketchy captured by his index, without subjecting his methods to peer review.
My point about Rushton, which I admit was a deliberate jab, is that he is pretty widely considered a racist but even when he was alive I wouldn't have told people to avoid your program because the other people there are great. (Without divulging too much, I have personal connections to the program.)  So, avoid "people" whose work is being questioned I can agree with but "places" is a real stretch.
To be frank, if a student wants to be even wiser and has a good enough record to be choosy, they shouldn't work with anybody who's a real "new methods" zealot either. They might end up running registered replications for five years and never develop an independent program of research.  e.g., to steal your line I wouldn't touch Uli with a ten mile pole.

So far Northwestern, UCLA, and Berkeley seem have reached out... My schools seem 'silent' so far.

Best and Craziest: Find a 9-to-5 job. Spend my nights crying myself to sleep, but capture my tears. I'll save my tears until I can fill a bath tub. Proceed to bath in my tears, but record it and post it on social media. The post will go viral, igniting my YouTube career. In my videos, I'll call out all those who've rejected me in the past; though I will still cry myself to sleep at night.

I fixed the "closer look" plot- ordering from Nov to May.

Also, all I added a Program Type table on page 2. Be skeptical of all the program/school info due to the lack of clean data. I'm working in a string-matching function now, in hopes that I can get more accurate numbers related to those variables.
I don't want people to worry if they missed a peak day. I estimate around half of the sample is Clinical Psych, which (to my knowledge) tend to have a few November deadlines, this will skew the data a bit.
    Updated version
Thanks everyone for working on this with me!

    This is a great idea!
"Best"/actual plan: stay in my current full-time position as a research coordinator to gain more research experience and earn a letter of rec from my current PI (I've only known him for 3 months so I didn't ask for an LOR from him this time 'round).
Crazy plan: Quit my job, move to Europe, and intern under a pastry chef.

Anyone else not heard back about interviews or anything? I'm starting to get super nervous. I applied to 6 programs, all social psych PhD, and feel I'm a really strong candidate. But the interview weekends all seem to be in mid/late January and I expected to have an invite or two by now

Those GRE subscription emails from random schools are the worst right now! Never should have checked that box.

"I've got edu email!"  "It's spam." *ready for repeat*   ...

At this point, I'm just waiting until tomorrow for all of my hopes and dreams to be crushed. I'm sure many others are in the same boat.

Also, for an update on UW interview invites, POI told me that the faculty will have area meetings in early/mid January, and then applicants will receive official invites after that (early-mid Jan).

I am officially calling it quits on holding my breathe about any last minute notifications before the holiday closings. Hope everyone has a great next week and that we all get amazing news next year!

Anyone know what the timeline is like for social psychology, particularly compared to clinical, for most programs? I am noticing increasingly more people receiving invite emails and POIs reaching out, and I concede, it is making me a bit nervous. I am trying not get disheartened, and I suppose one thing I keep wondering is if a lot of the posts I see are clinical because clinical receives emails first or if it is just because there are more clinical people posting on this forum. Anyone have thoughts? Does social tend to send out emails and invites later, in general?

Whether she does or not, universities usually have rules prohibiting faculty-student relationships. Instead of telling her, my suggestion is to seek out your university's counselling services and tell them exactly what you wrote here -- they could have someone you can talk to about your feelings so that they can be worked through in a healthier way.

Just be friendly and thoughtful. A thank-you note or gift would be appreciated, but are not expected or necessary. In all the years I've hosted students, I only had one leave a card. It was nice and I still remember the student, but I also remember others. I also had very few who made up the bed before leaving, so I remember the few who did that, too. As long as they were polite and considerate, I didn't expect anything more. You definitely don't need to spend all of your time with them (they probably wouldn't want that, either). They'll probably suggest some kind of joint activity at some point (like a dinner, or they'll just join one of the organized events at the department), and that's probably enough. The one thing I'd suggest is if you don't get your own key, be mindful of the fact that they need to wait for you to go home from any late evening events; offer to leave with them whenever they get tired and want to go home, so they don't have to stay up extra late just for you.

    Hi there,

I had 7 interviews last cycle, and got into my top choice so I’ll offer my perspective as an applicant.

If I stayed with a student (which I did at the 5 interview sites where this was offered), I always brought a thank you note and a small trinket (e.g., a magnet from my home state) as a gift. In the note, I always wrote a kind letter and thanked them for specific things during my visit. At my accepted school, my hosting student said this went a long way and they made a point to tell me POI about it. Small courtesies can go miles.

No... you don’t need to spend 24/7 with your host. In fact, they may have stuff to do (like projects or case reports) while you are there. I’d say it’s common to do at least one activity or share one meal with them apart from the group activities, but this is just anecdotal. I’m pretty social anyways, so I talked a ton with my hosts for the most part. However, I was coming straight for an interview to my top choice interview weekend, so I told the student in advance I’d like an evening to myself and they totally understood.

This should go without saying, but just be yourself and don’t do anything stupid. I’d say the host intereactions are you best chance to learn about the program from a student angle, but also carry the most risk if you are an a-hole, get wasted, say something incredibly offensive, etc.

I'm not hearing/seeing much from Berkeley yet so I'm assuming there hasn't been too many interviews sent out yet. It does say the 21st on the website but there has been 2 Skype interviews on the results page. Ahhh this is nerve racking.

So...just saw someone post on the results thread that Northwestern has finished reviewing applicants. Now I am feeling doubtful as I haven't had any update.
I did decide to reach out to my POI at U Wisc.

Just got an email from Northwestern to attend their interview weekend for Social Psychology! In the email they said they just contacted their top group of candidates, so I'm thinking most of their interview invites were sent out today. Best of luck, everybody!

    Hi everyone,
Just wanted to jump in here and say I'm also applying for social psych PhD programs. I'm only applying to 6 schools and they're almost all reach schools: Stanford, Princeton, Yale, Northwestern, University of Washington, UC Berkeley. I'm an international (Canadian) applicant.
Every time I see another person say that they've heard back about interviews from one of the above schools, I freak out a bit. Also, I've been checking my email constantly for the past week (but haven't heard anything).
Good luck to all with applications!

Oh, and @nicokren I've been wondering the same thing about who has already been sending out interview offers at Northwestern.

Hey, could the people who heard back from Northwestern Social let me know who their POIs are? Thanks!
