Thank you for sharing these wise words.
I am on the same boat: 4 applications and I deeply and honestly share the same feeling:I am expecting zero % invites. I cannot say that I take it softly, mainly bc the main reasons I expect this is prejudice - my Undergrad and Masters were in Brazil, even though I am a domestic applicant- and racism - I am Latino. And I also preparing myself to move temp to a new city but to a place I always wanted to go: The arctic polar circle, the land of the midnight sun, the city of Inuvik here in Canada. I would spend Spring and Summer and then head back south to...whatever life brings.
Fall '19 applications ? Nah, hardly. Maybe I will  be a Digital Nomad, travelling and telling people what it feels like to do what some of them always wanted to try but they have never had the guts to let go and fly. I will be living dream of and for those whose daily pain coming from a harsh rut is too heavy to bear. Reading my blog, they will be free, even if for a few minutes a day. If I succeed in this endeavor, then the failure in my applications will have turned into the greatest success so far in this short earthly lifetime of mine.
But, in the meanwhile, let us both keep the faith,  hoping for the best and expecting.... the " bestEST".

I will be very brief. Not getting admitted to graduate school is a silly reason to wish for death. The academic job market is very bleak at the moment, particularly for humanities/social sciences PhDs. So maybe this is a silver lining for you.
But if you are truly passionate about doing research and pursuing academia, supposing you still do not get in this year, why not ask the departments which areas of the application you can improve on, so that you can better  your chances next time? Also, if you are applying for a PhD program time, why not apply for an MA next time? best wishes.

Wow ! This is amazing ! I am also  a PR. Have you applied for UBC  and Dalhousie only? Anyhow, we must keep in touch ! Fingers crossed!

I have a lot in common with you.
I also already have a PhD degree (from US)  and postdoc experiences. Like you, I am also an immigrant to Canada (I'm a PR). However, the academic job market in Canada in my area seems non-existent, and I applied to two clinical programs this year (UBC and Dalhousie). There are only 3 universities in Canada that offer this program in English. Hope things turn out all right for both of us.

Hi, I will message you the name of my school and my area. If it is something you feel passionate about, by all means pursue it. Just make sure that you have excellent research output (that means three things: publications, publications, and publications). Otherwise, it would be impossible to get an academic position on today's job market.
    best wishes
