Applied to Maryland, Rutgers, Michigan, John Hopkins, UNC,  and Duke.  Have a rejection from Michigan, acceptance from UNC and haven't heard from the others (assuming on waiting list with little hope of getting in).  Pumped about UNC as it and Duke were the top two choices.   Applied to 8 schools for 2020 and got all rejections.  Tough couple of years - but keep hope alive everyone.  Spent the past year (after getting MA) being an adjunct professor at a small private school and being an intern at a state museum.

    Guys, I did it!
I applied to three programs and was rejected by one, accepted by one and still have not heard back from the last one. Today I got an offer of an assistantship at the school that accepted me with stipend, tuition waiver, and health insurance! I am beyond excited. I had almost given up hope.
After a process of about six years (deciding what I wanted to do, getting a second bachelor's degree, started applying to programs for fall of 2019) I have finally gotten where I want to be.
Congratulations to my fellow new graduate students! If you haven't gotten in this cycle or haven't heard back yet, don't give up!

I am incredibly lucky because I have a support system of a bunch of lovely people who have been helpful with helping me do certain things; one of my friends who is already a professor has offered to coach me through next application season and I have many people overseas who I know asking around to see if professors would be keen about my research so I know who to reach out to, so that's helped immensely. I played video games all day today after my Greek class, I have stuff to distract me tomorrow, and I teach during the week, so I definitely have things to distract me before diving back into things I want to work on to help with the next application cycle. And if you ever want to message and talk about it, I'm all ears!

Thanks @somethingClassics and @ClassicsApp21 for your quick response. Congratulations @somethingClassics.
Even though I want to work on a PhD, I'm okay waiting for now. There's always next year.
@ClassicsCandidate, sorry to hear that you got all rejections as well. From what I can tell, this was a tough year for a lot of candidates.

I'm glad to have helped, and I appreciate the rooting! Many people don't get in on their first round - I had someone message me and tell her it took four tries. I'm extremely stubborn, so I'm not giving up! And I hope you get good news soon, too!

Congrats, @somethingClassics! I was also interviewed (on 15th February), but I haven't heard back from them yet. I'm hoping for a waiting list and wishing you the best of luck @DiomedesVIII.
Just to add my voice to the chorus, I also wish our colleague @ClassicsCandidate the best of luck this year. You have been absolutely amazing and essential in this group! I wish you find joy in everything you choose to do this year!

Sorry if this is uncouth to say, but if you have been admitted to UChicago and don't plan to accept I would ask if you could please please decline your offer soon! I am waitlisted and must decide on a job offer within a short time frame and really hope to go to UChicago!

@ClassicsCandidate your positive and upbeat messages have brightened this forum and made this agonizing process a little more tolerable, I've really been rooting for you. I hope things work out one way or another in the future!

Ugh, I'm sorry. But like you said, the waiting is over! Time to go enjoy some anxiety-free fun.
I'm glad you have a plan on moving forward. I don't, aside from trying to make my application stronger for next year and being depressed. lol

You don't need an MA to be accepted into a medieval art PhD program, but you do need Latin, German and French. Most Americans do not have these qualifications when they finish their BA so they need to get an MA. When I say Latin, German and French I mean *actual* knowledge of these languages, as in the equivalent of a 2nd year university level or higher. Medievalists cannot fake their way out of language requirements in the same way as many other fields can. If you don't have advanced knowledge of German you simply cannot write a dissertation on medieval art. Professors at top programs generally will not even look at an applicant that doesn't have at least 2/3 at the time of application. It's shouldn't be difficult to find potential advisors - just look at who has written recent publications you are citing/reading and google them.

Every time I think I've accepted it and start think about having to move on or create a concrete back up plan I end up feeling so ick about everything! I think all-rejections is hard to stomach during a normal application season, and feels almost impossible this year because there isn't that much to distract me or to look forward to. Trying to hold on to the possibility of doing another MA (funded this time around) or maybe finding a relevant job...or maybe just applying again next year. No matter what, this has been such a stressful time for everyone!

I kind of have back up plans / action plans in case of an All-Rejection pile, and I feel like I'm kind of mentally prepared for it but it's still an ick feeling.

I did my undergrad at Brandeis; it's a fantastic program. I applied/was admitted into to the MA last year, and was also disappointed by the funding

Ahhh gotcha makes sense. Thanks for letting me know, that really helps. I wish schools were faster in following up then, it’s frustrating to be held in rejection limbo for weeks on end ??. Welp as soon as they and CU send my formal rejects I’m out for this round! I’m with @ClassicsCandidate, feeling very discouraged all around this year.

Well, just now was informed I got into Brandeis' MA program. Got some funding, so that's a win! But unfortunately not nearly enough funding, so that's a bummer.

Well, a mentor of mine encouraged me to reach out and see if some of the schools I hadn't heard back from had a timeline for when decisions would be released. Toronto was nice enough to just tell me I wasn't on the list of students getting offers so... mission success? Side note UBC said they won't be sending anything out until mid-march at earliest.

Thank you! I'm mostly interested in Greek social history, especially in population displacement and demographic studies, mainly in Archaic and Classical Greece but also Late Antiquity and Byzantium, especially late Byzantium. I generally focused on the Greece/Late Antiquity for the Classics programs and Late Antiquity/Byzantium for the History programs.

Yes of course. Rejection is not good experience. But let's always remember that it doesn't imply anything about us, but is due to 1) pure luck 2) the special covid conditions with fewer fundings and more applicants.

Congratulations on your admission to Boston and Chicago! I’m going to interview with Duke in March too. Duke is my only hope now lol do you mind if I ask which university is your top choice now?
