    Hi all!

My anxiety about applying to PhD programs next year is creeping in as my friends are now receiving decisions from this cycle. I want to research the the effects of racism and other forms of discrimination on health and evaluate policies to eliminate systemic discrimination as a means to better health.

My biggest worry for admissions is that I don't have a Master's. I don't want to pay for an MPH when I already have pretty substantial research experience and did a public health undergrad major. I'm wondering if you could take a look at my credentials and let me know your thoughts on whether not having the Master's degree will hurt me in admissions?

Undergrad: top 30 US News private university, GPA was 3.8-something, magna cum laude, did double major + minor all directly related to my intended PhD studies

Research experience: 4+ years editing/drafting papers for a professor and doing some analyses, 2 years in a psychology lab, did an honors thesis (collected my own data, passed IRB etc.), 2 years working for top public health researcher post-undergrad. My LORs will all be from profs I have done research with and will be stellar.

GRE: On ETS practice exam I got 170V, 154Q (I'm working to break 160 on quant in the real test)

Additional: I'm expecting to have 2 empirical papers under review by the time I submit my applications, and I will have a couple of non-peer reviewed public health publications. I received a couple of rewards and research grants in undergrad, but nothing too impressive (no Fulbright or anything like that)

So... what do you think? It is a waste of time to apply to PhDs without the master's or do I have a shot?

    THANK YOU!!! :D

It's possible to get admitted without a master's degree, but it likely will limit your options to a small group of schools. There is not set standard and even as someone who was applying to DrPH/PhD programs with a non-MPH, but still relevant master's degree I was getting mixed feedback on my chances. Your best bet is to try to identify your top program choices and then contact the program directly to discuss admissions criteria.

I wasn't selected either, but I'm trying to see what else I can find through the department, the Institute, or on campus. It isn't ideal but I'm going to see what comes along. I'm hopeful something will work out or that once I'm in the program, I'll secure a research position. I haven't accepted my admission yet though, because this does make me nervous, and I potentially have other options elsewhere. I just really like their program (sigh).

Will you still try and attend without guaranteed funding for the fall semester?

I have a fully funded offer at the University of Maryland, so I'm feeling like I should play it safe and take that opportunity.

I have a friend currently at GW finishing his DrPH and what you've described is what I was expecting in terms of funding. He said in the past they've been very good about finding slots for students on campus and moving them to research jobs as they become available. Both PhD/DrPH programs should  be graduating a good number of students this year which makes me more hopeful that there will be more space, but the timeline for that (everyone completing defense/whatever else they need to graduate) and the April 15th deadline probably don't align perfectly. I've emailed GW and will call tomorrow if I don't hear anything back today.

GW emailed me back and said I wasn't selected for funding, disappointing but I'm glad I finally know.

I haven't gotten any sort of notice yet. I completed my FAFSA just before it was due. I'm trying to avoid loans at all costs, and hope to find some sort of position with the university as I plan to leave my current employer and will need to relocate to the DMV area. University employees qualify for tuition remission - research personnel qualify the 1st semester coinciding or following the appointment date while staff have to wait 180 days (!) to qualify.

Not sure what your situation is like but maybe this is an option you can consider as well?

Anyone admitted into GWU's DrPH program and have any additional information on funding?

I received my admission for the DrPH in Health Behavior (very excited) but am very nervous about funding opportunities, as nothing was mentioned in my letter. I've reached out to the Program Director and the graduate assistant to find out more. The assistant said that some funding packages were sent with letters, but that additional funding may become available as department facility get approved for different research projects.  Does anyone know if most DrPH students in the program end up with some sort of funding package or tuition coverage via assistantships?

    Thanks in advance!

My friend is currently in the Health Behavior DrPH program and he said the department overall does a good job making sure everyone is getting funding. It does seem this year they accepted a larger cohort of students for both PhD and DrPH so I'm being cautiously optimistic.

@lincoln.hawks This waiting game is killing me. They said early March at the latest, but they were hoping this week. I'm hoping this means all my waiting will be done this week. Seems like it is such a small program not too many applied? Or they just don't obsess over access this website?

@Lrm72@boisdejasmin@drph_324 My DrPH Health Behavior acceptance email said the same thing about who to contact about financing but the attached 'official letter' said: "Additionally, I am pleased to inform you that you have been recommended as a candidate for a Graduate Assistantship. Details about the assistantship opportunity will follow in an official letter." Sure would be nice to know what that means...or when the official letter mentioned in my official letter will come :) Congrats all!

My letter says "we are in the process of identifying funding opportunities for which you might be a good fit. The Program Director will be reaching out to you soon to discuss some possible outcomes". I am a little surprised at this since my interview focused a fair amount on my experience teaching, so I was expecting to get plugged into a TA position first. Guess I'm just going to have to wait and see what they have waiting for me :)

I applied to predominantly PhD programs, but did apply to the DrPH at GWU for Health Behavior (interview went well I think) and the DrPH at the Colorado School of Public Health. Has anyone applied to or heard from that program?

Have you been in touch with anyone at GW since your interview? I was expecting to get some notification to set up 1:1 interviews with professors sometime this week.

Was your interview for PhD or DrPH. I applied for Health Behavior DrPH and haven’t heard anything either way from them. I know some people have gotten rejection letters and others have interviews but I think I’m in some middle group.

DrPH, hope you get an invite soon! Mine came on the evening of the 19th.

Always fun to get it over with, that's for sure! How many people were on the other side of the screen? I'm interviewing for their PhD program on Monday and wondering how many faces to expect...

There were three panelists on video and I think three professors called in. Good luck on Monday!

This makes me nervous!!! Thanks for the update! ?

I'm really feeling nervous now too, by the time I'm interviewed it will have been a grand total of 12 days that I've known I'm being considered for the PhD program instead of an MPH, eek!

Hey folks, another lurker from previous years, primarily because HGSE Admissions people are so cadgy about answering questions, so reading these threads has been way more helpful for me. I got into MEd in Specialized Studies last year, but didn't end up going. Just submitted my application! This year:

    Program/Concentration: PSP research strand
    GRE Score: verbal - 162, quantitative - 154, analytical - 4.5
    GPA: 3.8
Work Experience: 6 years in youth work, primarily focusing on youth voice/youth empowerment/youth involvement in policy and homeless youth work. Also have worked with the littler ones. Right now I manage a new young adult Diversion housing pilot program and coordinate a homeless youth worker training institute in Seattle. My goals and reasons for applying to HGSE are very tied up in this work experience.
Undergrad Experience: BA honors from Hamline University in MN w/ double major in Middle East Studies and History - nothing-to-write-home-about private institution; took some ECE classes back when I wanted to be a teacher
Research Experience: Published a few articles in notable journals, but it was all Middle East related, so I'm not sure that is super helpful (and the admissions people refused to tell me). I have led workshops at a few professional conferences and have built youth worker training materials, but those are different than academic research, so IDK.

LoR/SoP: Last year I submitted one from my BA honors thesis advisor, one from my former ED who used to work at the US Dept of Ed and my former supervisor; I only had to add one new reference since I was re-applying, and I got one from another former ED who is very well respected in homeless youth work and has seen some of my new leadership work this past year up close. I didn't want to tip my current org that I'm applying, so none of mine are from them. SoP is done. Feels strong. I am hoping to study the same thing I wanted to study last year, just realized that I was not going to vibe at all with the Specialized Studies cohort after being on the program-specific call with them. All of that meant I had to change a few things, but not re-write an entire SoP.
What Other Schools Are You Applying To: None. If I don't get in, I'm just going to apply to some European schools with late deadlines and English youth work programs and go. Since I got in last year and feel like I'm a better applicant this year, I'm hoping it works out.

PSP '11 here, you're a great fit for the program. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me. I think your interests and experiences align well with those of Bob Selman and Gretchen Brion-Meisels.

Congrats! I've been really impressed by UMD so far. I applied to Toxicology and Environmental Health and received an unofficial acceptance from my contact a week or two ago. Do you think you'll go if admitted? It would be great to chat to other people interested in the school!

I'm at another MD school now for my MPH but have not had the best experience...so UMD is very appealing right now!

Thanks! I really want to be back in the DC area, so it's a close call between GW and UMD, unless one of the other schools I applied to for MPH bumps me up into the PhD/DrPH pool and offers amazing financial aid. But I can't see anything pulling me away from DC if I an opportunity there.

  13. I'm applying to GW's Health Behavior program; I've also applied to MPH programs at Johns Hopkins, Emory, Drexel, and Tulane since some admissions counselors were a bit apprehensive about pursuing a DrPH without an MPH or more coursework in biostats.

Undergrad School: Private liberal arts college
    Undergrad GPA/Major GPA: 3.6
    Major/Minor: Psychology
    Grad School: Ivy
    GradGPA (if applicable): 3.8
Grad Studies (if applicable): Master of Education in Prevention Science
    GRE: 163 V/157 Q/5.0 AW
    Experience/Research:
    - Three years as peer health educator in undergrad
    - Three years as research consultant writing socio-emotional health curriculum
    - CDC PHAP program - program coordinator for a school-based STI screening program, program evaluation and intervention development for LTBI patients
    - Presented twice at PHAP seminars, presented to TB PEN on LTBI work, had poster on same project accepted to TB Union conference but was unable to attend
    - Fellowship with CDC focused on adolescent health policy

Special factors: Some admissions counselors seem to like that I've taken a nontraditional route into public health

LORS: Current CDC manager, 2 program managers and chief medical officer from PHAP host site, master's thesis advisor if need be

Interested in: School-based healthcare, adolescent health, socio-emotional development, infectious disease, domestic health policy

  14. I applied to UMD as for the Behavioral and Community Health MPH, but they sent me an email saying they'd like to interview me as a PhD candidate instead. A huge surprise and now I'm both excited, but also quite nervous as I think my research and presentations aren't comparable to having papers published or working as a research assistant in public health.
