I just started my PhD right out of undergrad. I do think that those who have done a masters are slightly ahead, but only by a little. People say the difference evens out after the first couple years.
But I have some advice for applications. Look at the National Science Foundation's Graduate Research Fellowship Program. If you're competitive and have good advisors now, I would try to apply now (it's due the week of Oct 22), and if you don't get it, you can apply again once you're in a program.
    Best of luck!

I applied and did my PhD straight out of undergrad (now a postdoc). Yes, many students have been working in the lab as research assistants for a while, which means they have more research experiences, but you will catch up eventually. Don't worry about being younger than most students. Doing a PhD requires a lot of time commitment and it can be challenging to fit that in when you also have family commitments like young children. So it is actually an advantage to do a PhD earlier in your life.
I am happy to talk more about my experience if you are interested

Hi all, I enjoy reading this thread and would like to connect with all great people in this room! I got a 2018 Fulbright Thai Graduate Scholarship and will pursue my PhD in Paleoceanography at Texas A&M University starting this 2018 Fall. I am so excited as this will be my first time to live abroad. I am looking forward to exploring every opportunities that await. So, should you have any recommendation for me to live in the US, or even specifically at College Station, it will be my pleasure.
Also, if anyone of you is interested in coming to teach English in Thailand, I am more than happy to keep in touch.

Hey! I have no idea, but am glad to see a fellow potential Australian Fulbrighter! Congratulations on being a semifinalist. I am a semifinalist for the open study/research award myself. What university/city would you be affiliated with?

Longtime lurker, semi-finalist for country in Central Asia, had my interview last week and felt decent about it! It's my second time applying and I was an alternate last time, so I'm really hoping to get it! Sending lots of good wishes to everyone applying, hopefully they're punctual with their notifications.

    Hi all!
I had my transcripts physically mailed (since my college does not offer "official" electronic transcripts), and I was freaking out a little bit since I haven't received notification by either Fulbright or my home institution's transcript tracking service that my documents reached their destination. As you all (hopefully) know, today (Feb. 20th) was the deadline for Fulbright to receive transcripts. I called this morning, and the woman who answered looked up my name and let me know that while my transcript hasn't been processed yet, "there is no reason to worry," and that a potential holdup with transcript processing/receiving is not cause for disqualification. She said they have received thousands of documents, and they they are definitely bogged down. Just thought I'd share for those who sent out physical transcripts as well!
    Best of luck to everyone!

When I write "POI" I mean "Person of Interest" - not sure about other forumers
I guess sometimes once you get into a program your Person of Interest may transform into Person Oppressing Imagination

    Hi everyone!
I wanted to come in and share a quick thing for those who will receive the Research Grant next cycle. It seems like Fulbright provides "Research Enhancement Seminars" every year in a specific world region. This year it was in my region (Western Hemisphere). They e-mailed 5-6 countries Fulbright commissions for a call of research papers and if you happen to submit your current project and get accepted, ECA flies you to the host country to present your current paper/project and get peer-critique from fellow Fulbrighters from the region as well as an expert in the field. It seems like a mini-conference to help publish your Fulbright work and network. Given that, our Fulbright commission notified us in November about this opportunity and Jan 15 they gave us the paper submission guidelines which was due on Feb 1st. I just wanted to share this in case some of you are interested and happen to be in next years region of choice for the enhancement seminar (and you can start preparing your timelines).  Seminars are usually in the 7-8th month of the grant. It caught a lot of us off guard and some people had already made prior commitments so I wanted to share this in case you want to keep a look out for next year's seminar.

I was on my way to a RPDR All Stars viewing party because I, like probably all of us, needed something to take my mind of off this thing -- and then as I was getting on the bus I severely sprained my ankle. So now I'm at home, with frozen vegetables for company, and nothing but time to anxiously google fulbrighter blogs and incessantly check embark/email/the spreadsheet.
tomorrow will get here soon, I hope

    Hello all,
I just want to let everyone know that Mexico has just sent out emails to let semi-finalists know about Skype interviews. I am thrilled to hear such great news and hope you all will also hear something soon! Whether or not you get it, just remember that it's an honor to simply apply! You'll end up right where you're supposed to be. Keep in mind that life has a funny way of surprising us and giving us opportunities when we least expect them.
    Best of luck!!!
