  1. Ooh, lots of great changes here - I like the new subforums, and the ability to organize threads by things other than recently updated. However, is it possible to add back the little button by the thread title which brings you straight to the posts you haven't read yet? That was a useful feature.

Use the blue(?) dot/circle next to (left of) the topic title.

  2. Oh, also, where are the emoticons? I don't see them.

The last thing - avatars look a bit "squeezed" - don't know how to put it correctly, but you know what I mean. Could you fix that?

Emoticons should be there. You may have to re-crop your avatar to make it look right.

  3. Hmmm... I'm intrigued by this new software. Not sure how I feel about it...

Same here. But I like to live on the edge :)

    Questions:

    - We can only vote posts up and not down?

    - What's with the symbol that appears with the tab in Firefox? Can you change that? It reminds me of Transformers for some reason...

You can "like" and dislike (but only if you have previously liked). I've fixed the favicon. Any other requests/comments?

  6. Just so you all know I am watching this topic closely. As for the previously promised graph of how the forum usage looks, here's the past 4 admit seasons.

The graph starts at 10/1/2007 and ends yesterday, 4/21/2011. Healthy growth: in the week of Oct 1 2007 we had 107 visitors. Last week we had 115,107 visitors.

Here's the same thing with page views instead of visitors. From a mere 240k pageviews in Feb/Mar 2007 to almost 1M this time around.

  7. Yeah, GradCafe doesn't work for me either on my iPad (but it's the only forum that behaves as such for me)

If you disable rich text editing in your user preferences on this site then you'll be to post. This is a known issue which I hope they will fix in the next release.

  8. Hmm. I'm not 100% sure this is on topic, but anyway.

Are your points always going to be discrete like this, or are these samples from some continuous functions? In the latter case any norm between the functions will work.

If you have a finite set of points and the first point from sample one (X_1,Y_1) is always to be compared with the first point from sample two (A_1,B_1), etc. why not just do a sum of squares \sum_{i=1}^n (X_i-A_i)^2 + (Y_i-B_i)^2

I don't think using a KL divergence is the right approach.

Congrats newms AGAIN! But holy cow, over 500 posts? I had to double check my post counting script! Bhikhaari over 400? You guys, February only has 28 days. That's at least 15 posts a day from each of you. Ok.. shock over. I think that record will stand for a long time.

  10. Hello all,

I am debating revealing personal info (no name or location) such as details of my applications and circumstances surrounding them that might identify me to admissions personel or department faculty...Do they go on thegradcafe? or am I being paranoid? Information I want to reveal is to get some perspectives on my applications, but its personal in nature. THoughts?

I'm not sure what you mean by "How anonymous is thegradcafe". The only people who can see your email address are the administrators. Beyond that your anonymity is determined by how much information you post. If you don't want anyone to be able to deduce your real identity don't post at all. Otherwise there's always a small chance someone can recognize you, be it by your list of schools, research interest, or even your writing style and choice of words.

Keep in mind whatever you post, it's here to stay! We don't remove posts.

    Have fun.
