  1. It definitely shouldn't matter but old-fashioned (sexist) advice would say not to wear it to avoid suggesting that you are too focused on your personal/family life, or making your interviewer wonder if you would take maternity leave at some point. It's garbage on multiple levels.
  2. If you also happen to be in need of a side job - Kaplan is always hiring ACT/SAT tutors and if you work for them you get access to all of their materials (books, lectures, online resources) for all of the tests they offer (even the ones you don't teach) for free. Super situational but that's what I did.
  3. If this is your first time applying, and especially if you're still in undergrad, I would highly recommend taking a year or two to improve your CV through research experience and try again. I'm not counting my chickens before they hatch, but just these few months of post-grad research experience has improved by application a lot and I have been getting much better responses this year. I applied last year and had two interviews that ended with no offer.
  4. I'm interested in hearing POIs for MSU and UNL. Feel free to DM me if you have questions about the places in my signature.
  5. There are plenty of schools that do not even pick up applications to read until after the new year! Plus, many professors I know don't actually come back to work until classes restart, which is probably next week. Unless you have strong evidence to the contrary, I wouldn't start presuming rejections until February at the earliest!
  6. I see you're headed to my neck of the woods! You're gonna love it!
  7. Last year, we had a break between the interviews and social afterwards and myself and my co-applicant roomie kept our blazers and blouses but put on jeans.
  8. I had one last year and one so far this year. Both times it was explained to me that getting a phone interview means that you meet all the requirements on paper, but the PI wants to ensure a good research/mentorship fit before spending time and resources bringing you out to the in-person. So the questions I was asked were mainly about my research goals/my dream project etc. I didn't feel like I was being tested on my qualifications/rehashing my CV, more just having a two-way convo to determine if there was a possibility that we could have a mutually beneficial mentor/mentee relationship.
  9. Invites are already out, but similarly, if anyone wants to chat about Ohio State, feel free to DM. I am a recent grad and current employee.
  10. I'm assuming that anyone who requested it when it was posted earlier in the week is still hoping to hear...myself included
  11. Yes, I was clinical and my status changed. However, it went back to "under review" after like 20 minutes of being "reviewed". I am wondering if it was perhaps a clerical error.
  12. Also 0% an expert, but I would agree that all else being equal, a research position is more relevant for a PhD. With that said, when I was deciding what to do after an unsuccessful admissions cycle last year, one of my mentors told me that it's completely valid to take a higher paying job that is not as relevant. As much as we like to pretend we live and breathe our careers 24/7, there's more to life than research...and money usually helps improve those things And with something like being a psychometrist, it's clearly still related to what you want to do. If it's in an academic setting, you might even see if you could find a way to volunteer some time to get an authorship/poster with a PI in your department. I personally ended up sticking in a research position, but I have to supplement my income with a part-time higher paying job to live life comfortably.
  13. Had a meeting with my current PI today and she was checking in on how I was doing emotionally during this waiting game and she goes "I see you checking that stupid website" ?
  14. I personally would probably text. The fact that she chose to text suggests to me that she doesn't rely on email and may not be responsive if you go that route. Obviously, texting is kind of weird and informal, but I mean...she started it... However, I have no expertise at all and also agree that this is a super weird situation.
  15. I had one last year. I was asked to elaborate on my research experiences and to speak specifically about research questions I would like to answer. They also talked about themselves as a researcher/mentor to determine if we sounded like a good match. And ended with the usual "Any questions I can answer for you about myself, the program, or <insert city>?"
  16. I guess I appreciate the follow-ups, but all of the reminder emails about "incomplete applications" due to letters not being in yet are not helping my anxiety!
  17. I posted this question in the main thread and I think it got a little buried, hoping someone following here might have some advice? -I took the GRE originally a year ago and got Q:159 (72%) V:161 (88%) AW: 4.5 (82%) . Quite honestly, I was happy with this, but a mentor encouraged me to retake it. I did so earlier this month and got Q: 157 (65%) V:167 (98%) AW:5.0 (92%). Now I'm at a loss of what to send to schools that do not superscore. Is it better to have solidly average scores in both categories or very high in verbal and low-average in quant (based on my most competitive schools)? I've gotten advice on both sides ?
  18. Hi all! Let me introduce myself quickly: -Graduated in the Spring w my BA in psych and gender studies (3.85 GPA) -Completed and defended thesis before graduation and sending out updated version of that manuscript for publication any day. Second/middle author on two other manuscripts that are in prep but not likely to be sent out in a timely manner for applications. -First author on one poster that was presented at national conference, won/placed at university undergraduate poster forum two years, second author on 3 other posters presented/accepted to national conferences -Applied to 7 programs last year, staying very close to my relatively niche research interests. Got 2 interviews and no offers (one PoI ended up taking nobody and the other went with another applicant and when I asked for feedback she said it was a "flip of a coin" and gave no other constructive feedback :/). This round I am expanding the number of programs that I am applying to as well as my research horizons, applying to some related areas. This has gotten me to a list of 19 schools, which I will likely pare down slightly before Dec 1: UC Boulder, VCU, Rochester, Miami (FL), Iowa, Syracuse, Washington, Kansas, GWU, Michigan State, Texas, UT Southwestern, Purdue, Pitt, Nebraska, NW Feinberg, Stony Brook, UNC Chapel Hill, and UBC.
