I'd definitely opt for something less fragile and proprietary than a Mac. Lenovo's ThinkPad laptops are absolute beasts, super durable and powerful without being crazy expensive.

That's an awesome habit to curate. I wish I was disciplined enough to wake up earlier than I absolutely have to in order to get to work on time--if I happen to wake up early, I can sometimes convince myself to get up and go for a run, but if I started reading I'd be right back asleep. Maybe once I'm back in grad school instead of on the office grind, making a morning routine will be easier.

This is an odd survey. First of all, YouTube is not social media, it's a content platform; including it is like including Netflix in your list. Secondly, when you ask "Who do you go to when feeling distressed," there is no "Friends" option (and you misspelled the word "Guardian"). Thirdly, there's nowhere for a respondent to indicate that they don't use social media at all.

For anyone wondering, I got in touch with admissions and learned that the official deadline for COVID-19 deferrals is August 1st, but they'll consider deferral requests up until classes start. Nice to have some flexibility.

Probably not, if only because a full year deferral would mean I can't bring my funding with me.
And speaking of funding--I got an email last night saying they had updated my decision on the portal. Got an extra $10k/year of funding from my appeal, bringing total tuition coverage to ~50%. Still planning on deferring for a semester if fall goes virtual, but either way this is nice to have!

Well, the deed is done! I've submitted my deposit to Columbia SIPA, will be moving back home to NY in the fall (assuming that's allowed). Very excited.
If Columbia is still running virtually, I'll be disappointed but not terribly surprised. I figure getting a bunch of the core econ/stats classes out of the way via Zoom is fine, and then I can get into the real meat of grad school come spring.

@nadine! I ended up going with SIPA! Cal was never a realistic option for me, as they gave me much less funding (about 25% of SIPA's offer) and even if I hadn't gotten any funding from Columbia, I would have accepted my offer from the Duke Nicholas School. Furthermore, I have family that I can live with in NYC, significantly reducing cost of living.
That said, I did go to UC Berkeley for undergrad, and I can attest that the culture and weather in the Bay Area is fantastic! It's a truly exceptional place to live, but it sounds like all other indicators are pointing you towards NY. (Which is also a pretty excellent place to live--I grew up in New York State and have spent a lot of time in the city).
Let me know when you make your decision, and good luck!

It's official, I put down my deposit at F&ES today! I am feeling a bit sad about turning down Michigan-- I really loved the professors and course offerings there, some even more so than at Yale. But in the end I was just more familiar with the program, people, and location of Yale so I felt much more comfortable committing there (among other reasons).
Now I can focus on being stressed out by the possibility of online classes in the fall ??

sent an email to my top school asking if there was any more master's funding - expecting absolutely nothing - and got a response saying they'll give me another $10k (on top of the tuition/fees and $10k stipend they were already giving me). & sweet baby jesus I was genuinely shocked by that.

i literally just asked if i could work for more money and they said , 'here, have this 10k for free' ?

I placed an order from a small local bookshop, and they threw in a "Read Books Punch Nazis" sticker. Such a little thing but it improved my day so much.

Unless I'm missing something, the NASA offer seems strictly better. 34k + 12k * 3yrs = 70k, while NASA is paying out 320k total. Easy choice! Even if I misunderstood and the NSF award is 56k * 3yrs, the NASA award is almost double.

If you've put down a deposit, you won't get it back. Otherwise there are no consequences besides ruffling a few feathers on the admissions team, and/or any professors you've contacted at the school you're pulling out of.

Have people started making their final decisions? I think I've settled on the Nicholas School of the Environment at Duke! I hope everyone is happy with the outcome of their applications - it's been so nice to share this process with a forum of likeminded folks!! ?

OK, I'm going to chime in with my dilemma. This forum has been endlessly helpful while navigating stressful waters, so why stop now??
I've been admitted to Duke's Nicholas School of the Environment for a Masters in Environmental Management, as well as Columbia SIPA for an MPA in Energy & Environment. Both offered me decent funding, around 30% tuition. Columbia has been my top choice throughout the admissions cycle, as New York is home and I'd love to be back there, not to mention that SIPA and NYC are probably the best places in the world to launch a career in international sustainable development.
I'm now worrying about the possibility that fall classes at Columbia will be held virtually. This wouldn't be so much of a problem if I were in undergrad, but really the academic content is around half of the reason I'm going to grad school in the first place--especially in this field, the networking & practical experience are a huge part of the draw.
So, if the Columbia campus is still closed come August (which will also likely mean that NYC is a nightmare zone), is it worth missing out on a semester of "real grad school" so I can have that program as my springboard, or should I go to Duke instead? I already live in Durham and my apartment is a 5-minute bike ride from campus, so that would be extremely convenient; cost of living is also significantly cheaper here.
Of course none of us can know the future, so this will probably be decided later in the summer. I just wish Columbia would extend their deposit deadline like Duke has.
Any input is appreciated! Thanks folks.

Popping in to say that Duke's Nicholas School of the Environment has pushed back their deposit deadline to June 1. Very glad to hear that and hoping others follow suit.
I was on an admitted students' webinar for Columbia SIPA the other day and someone asked if they had similar plans. The answer was "not as of now, but we'll keep you updated."
