doctormelody reacted to Still-waiting in Columbia University MSW Fall 2019
I am losing patience and sanity. Has anyone called them up to give them a piece of their mind? At this point, I can not stand this limbo anymore. I don't know if I need to go back to work, plan to move to NYC, apply for scholarships, or go off on Columbia to have them make a decision. It is just rude to keep people in waiting for so long, and if it is that hard for them to make a decision then maybe they need to rethink their system. I have been keeping recruiters in limbo by not being able to give any definitive answers about my plans, and I am looking really bad right now.
Anyone else heard anything from them?

doctormelody reacted to Neep in Which MSW program to pick?
Go with the cost factor as your biggest influence. As long as it is CSWE accredited, it sucks to owe a massive amount in student loan debt. And lets be real, as long as you are licensed does anyone really care where you went?

I used this website as my guide, that way it takes at all the guess work as far as accreditation goes.
https://www.cswe.org/Accreditation/Directory-of-Accredited-Programs/Online-and-Distance-Education
Secondly, a lot of the online programs I looked into at least have classes on the geriatric side of things. Some even offer concentrations in them. But even if they do not offer that, you have the bulk of your grad school in field work, so you could use that time to concentrate more specifically in that and use the internship period as way to gain insightful knowledge. Personally I am attending WVU's online program. They have the concentration of geriatric on-campus but I am not sure they offer it online. I do know they have several Geriatric classes you can take online as it pertains to social work though.
As for oncology, I have not found any with that specific interest (but that doesnt mean they dont exist!)
My end goal (currently) is to become a hospital SWer. So I plan on taking some social worker classes that have to deal with the medical setting. That could be where you get more of that oncology feel

I applied to McGill's QY MSW program last year, and felt exactly the same way. Much like you, I have a lot of experience. I have 7 years of work experience as a counselor, I facilitate groups on a monthly basis, and have worked in three different social service settings as an employee. I have a BA and a CEJEP diploma in social services. Plus, I supervise students to train them in the field of social work. On top of that, my grades were good too. I had been waiting to apply for McGill for 10 years and on the first try I was immediately rejected. I was completely crushed. However, this year I applied again and I was put onto their waiting list, and I made contacts in their department and started doing more alongside my full time job as a crisis counselor. I took more classes and boosted up my GPA, I got lots of feedback about the application before I submitted it, and sent out emails to people in the department. I think that revising a statement of interest always helps, and going directly to their department and asking them how to improve it for next year can go a long way. I did that, and now im on the waiting list. Despite how frustrating that is, I still find that its better than an outright refusal. It also depends on how competitive the program is, so don't take it personally either. For example my program of interest accepts 20 people every year out of hundreds of applicants. I really think that it's important to remember that your value or your capabilities are not validated by an acceptance to your program of choice. You are already awesome and doing your best. It really is the luck of the draw sometimes, and try not to let it get you down! I'm sending you good positive vibes!!

Thank you for the insight! That makes a lot of sense.
I did get in to Michigan, and I think it's a fantastic program - one of my best friends actually just finished her MSW from UM and loved it.
The reason I'm not really considering UM is because I've lived in Michigan my entire life, lived in Ann Arbor for 6+ years, and my fiance and I are ready for a change. We see this as a safe opportunity to move away for a limited time before settling down near family (both of our families live in close proximity in Michigan). I love Ann Arbor, it's an amazing town, but I want to have exposure to different cities, different lifestyles, different cultures that come with bigger cities, etc. etc. And in the end, I didn't receive enough in scholarship to make it that much more financially feasible, to be honest. While UM is an amazing program, I'm of the belief that it's more about what you make of your degree than where it's from, and life is too short to not go out and explore the world (I'm ready to get out of the Midwest)!

Another option could be an online program that offers in state tuition for everyone (WVU does this but I am not sure how many other programs do)

Hi, I don't know if anyone needed this, so I just decided to create it. I was just curious on who all have been applied, accepted, or pending acceptance, or more options to Kean University's Master's of Social Work Program. Kean University is the only school I was accepted in. I applied to Hunter University and NYU, but I'm so excited to attend Kean because I'm making the big move from Missouri to New Jersey! I applied in September, and was accepted January 4th!

doctormelody reacted to Kaytea11 in Online MSW: Am I Qualified?
There are many online social work programs. I would definitely suggest you take the time to research them. There are also hybrid programs that are pretty amazing. I will warn you that there are online programs out there thst jobs will not hire you if you went there. Be selective. I've heard of a lot of places that say if they see certain online schools they don't even look at the application. They can be very expensive so pay attention to that as well. Most social work programs seem to favor work and volunteer experience. But I agree with what has already been stated above. You never know until you try! You can apply and in the meantime look for work in that field. Also remember that often grad schools will really look at your last 60 units and not just your cumulative GPA.

I think if you want to work in Seattle there is no better place to go than UW, especially since the program is nationally well respected

You won’t know unless you apply. I had a 2.9 undergrad GPA too. I’ve been accepted into top 25 schools. I am a veteran with multiple deployments to Afghanistan so I think that helped. I also had a 3.75 in graduate work. MSW programs look at the whole student from what I’ve read.
But seriously, you won’t know unless you apply.

No idea, but I assume you'll find out before me because I don't plan on paying the deposit until next week, so if you wouldn't mind reporting back here when you find out, that'd be awesome!

I would email them and indicate that XYZ school is your first choice, but Peer School offered you more, and ask them if they could match. Note that Columbia just doesn't grant that much financial aid for their MSW.

Just received a decision via email. Clinical 2-year track. I accepted.
Was told I’d find out by 15 March and then April 30th when I called yesterday. Reason was because a recommendation was received late (22 Feb late lol).
Is there a Facebook group for our cohort?

doctormelody reacted to Chinchilla94 in MSW Interview Attire
My go to outfit for interviews has always been slacks, a long sleeve button down, a blazer, and boots. You can add makeup but nothing too crazy; go for a more natural look. I have always been under the impression that it is better to go more formal than required than too casual.

I received my acceptance earlier today as well for the 2yr clinical track!! I interviewed last Wednesday. So excited! I’m still waiting on Columbia, but unless they give me a pretty hefty financial aid package, it’ll be a no brainer to go for Hunter!

Yeah, I didn’t get into BU last year but I got into Columbia. MSW admissions are weird.

Columbia looks better on the resume and will open doors anywhere. If you can afford it, go there. If you really want to live in Denver right now, come on out. If you can wait 2 years, go to Columbia and come on out in 2021. Also, the campuses have very different feels. I'd recommend visiting on accepted students day.
Factoring in your total student debt is very important. Social Work positions do not pay well, he said stating the obvious. I have multiple friends who are being crushed by their debt which is impacting their decisions across all areas of their life.
