Just got my acceptance letter to Indiana and I'm shaking. I almost didn't apply because they required the subject test. So incredibly grateful.

Also...sidenote...I know this gets reiterated excessively, but It's Reeeeal: if you get "shut-out" this year and Really Want that PhD, freaking keep reading & writing & learning then re-apply!
I first applied straight-outta-undergrad, real green and weak, did a coupla MFAs, and I've so far been accepted into 4 fully-funded PhD programs!! Change is manifest!!

Anyone want to claim the Colorado Boulder acceptance and give a little more info on the cohort size bit you included on the Results Board?  Congratulations, by the way!

Does anyone else kinda feel like waiting to hear back is sorta like a middle school dance? Like, slowly everyone you know has someone to go to the dance with, and you're stuck not knowing what's gonna happen to you ?

@Indecisive Poet I graduated with my MA in 2016 and have been teaching at a technical college since! I got hired as an adjunct which was good experience, but of course I had to keep my restaurant job at the time to pay the bills. I got lucky because after a couple semesters of adjuncting, a full-time spot opened up and the tech college hired me on. Though I don't want to teach at this level forever (hence why I applied to PhD programs this year), it has affirmed my desire to teach, and having a stable salary and benefits is a huge plus. I think community and technical colleges often get overlooked when English MAs are looking for jobs (though I know there may not be a whole lot of open positions out there). Good luck!

Here me out. Forget about applying to schools. Imagine everything was centralized. All English departments were in one database. You upload all your stuff and list maybe some places you’d like to go. Departments then go through everyone and choose who they want to send offers to. Not considering any medievalists this year? Filter them out of the pool. This way, we’re not wasting time applying to schools that won’t consider us for hidden reasons, and maybe you fit at a school that you didn’t think to apply to. Is it too much work for committees? I dunno, they can figure it out.

Maybe check Rob Nixon’s Slov Violence: Environmentalism of the Poor; great read, and he definitely cites tons of other sources that are more focussed on intersection b/t ecocrit and postcolonial lit and theory. His book is probably more concerned with transnational perspectives and trajectories, but he has been doing postcolonial theory for a while, so you’ll get some of that, too.

Looking forward to getting an email from my CA schools tomorrow like "due to the inclement weather in the midwest, we will be delaying our admissions process by 2-3 days"

i received some really nice words from one of my letter writers today basically reminding me that pretty much everyone in academia experiences rejection--multiple forms of rejection--at pretty much every step. from PhD programs, from fellowships, from postdoc positions, from jobs even after a grueling interview process, from journals, from publishers. it may not all feel as horrible as what we feel right now, but certainly we will be rejected in some form again even if we believe in ourselves and believe in our research. it's all about persistence, so don't let the rejection kill your ambition

Sorry to all of you who got a rejection today. Just remember you are all bright shining stars! I'm sure I'll be right with you in dealing with a rejection sometime this week.

Throwing my hat into the ring of rejected Duke applicants. Surprisingly not that disappointed, and still holding out a bit of hope on other programs. It also doesn't hurt the morale that I just found out a few days ago that I'm a semifinalist for a Fulbright grant... so I can treat my wounds with some nice ego-soothing salve.
Continuing to wish you all the best of luck with the upcoming decision announcements!

CatBowl reacted to disidentifications in Duke English PhD F19 Interview/Rejection
for everyone panicking, i emailed the dgs to clarify if they're carrying out interviews for this application cycle (because they did so a few years ago) and the answer is no. whomever posted about their invitation to interview on the results page is either mistaken, or trying to mess with us, or there might, perhaps, be special cases that necessitate interviews. otherwise, they "should be able to start notifying people next week". (fingers crossed!)

omg thanks y'all! this is seriously just the beginning for this thread, and i sense in a Big Way. Even just from our quippy posts I can tell it's a room full o genius.
n then the funny sobering comes...cuz..i wonder if the funding makes it a struggle at UCSC after all...info to come, apparently
edit: side-note just to say, this feels extra crazy because none of my family has ever graduated high school.

Great point and thanks for sharing your experience! I forgot to mention that I am also looking at community colleges. Here's hoping for something full time, but I'm not above part-time adjunct/part-time restaurant (this is essentially what I did during my undergrad–MA gap year, though with adjuncting replaced by tutoring writing). It was tough juggling the two jobs and I'd really like the stability of something full time, but we'll see what happens...
