Can't say I'm not disappointed to not hear from Emory (really wanted to live in Atlanta!) but my sincerest congrats for the interviewees--go rock your interviews!
And also congrats to all of those accepted! It really is nice to start seeing good news for people.

The first poem of hers that I fell in love with and one that basically encapsulates what made her so special to me

Anyone else here a fan of Mary Oliver? I'm devastated to hear she passed away.

I can't offer any advice, but congrats!!! I do agree that 4 days seems like a long time so I'm curious to hear any input others have if this is common or not.

Hi guys, I'm one of the Emory interviewees. Have been lurking here for a while and y'all seem like really nice people. Does anyone have any idea what the interview is supposed to consist of? The DGS emailed me and said there'd be dinners, social events, a city tour (??), and interviews with faculty. It's a four-day thing and that feels like a super long time. Let me know if anyone knows anything about the interview process. I'm super anxious about it.

I don't know for sure, but my understanding is that it varies. Sometimes your POI will be on the adcomm, sometimes they won't be, sometimes they'll have pull, sometimes they won't. I think it's different from program to program and year to year.

I'm starting to wish I'd applied to UIUC just to have an answer so soon! ?

placeinspace got a reaction from Mumasatus in Online programs/sources for academic-level foreign language?
Hi all,
I'm applying for next fall so I know I'm ahead of myself on this, but hopefully people will still have some useful info. I took 8 years of German from middle school until college, but really did not enjoy it by the end. Additionally, once I narrowed down my research interests, I quickly discovered German did not help me in my MA research at all, and French would be far more useful. Because of this, for my PhD, I'm interested in using French to fulfill the language requirement. I'd like to get ahead a bit after apps are submitted, and I was hoping for recommendations on online subscriptions or programs (paid or unpaid) that are geared more towards academic uses. I've used Duolingo pretty extensively, and don't find it super useful because of how random the vocabulary is. I'd like to start more with sentence structure, alphabet, etc. Any tips would be helpful!

I'm training for Vermont City! I ran Hartford this past October and was like "Okay I'm gonna take a year off from long distance and go back next Fall" but alas, I couldn't stay away. Nothing relieves admissions-related anxiety quite like running for hours on end ha ha.

I think because of how quickly one year in my current job has gone by, it's not so stressful for me to think about the possibility that I'll have to do it again. Being away from academia has certainly given me some confidence that research/teaching is what I want to do, but having a year where I don't owe my free time to anyone but myself has, for the most part, been really lovely.
When my mentors (professors) ask what I'm up to, they sort of envy being able to dive into anything I'm curious about (like, say, reading biographies or Shakespeare plays instead of books that are strictly or even tangentially connected to my research areas). And the time has just blazed by. If any of you find yourself in a similar situation, I think/hope you'll have a similar experience.
A year is no time, and you will keep getting smarter while you're away from school—even if you're not doing something you think is "special" like joining the peace corps or whatever (although that would of course be a wonderful way to spend your time). In fact, when I came back to my thesis to start working on this cycle's writing sample, I was amazed at how much the distance from my writing enabled me to think about my argument differently and reconstruct/strengthen it. If I get shut out this year, I'm almost excited about the possibility that another year of life will make me an even stronger applicant.
I also haven't been able to do any plays since college (where I did 1-2 per semester), so if I don't get in I think I will probably actually audition for some stuff around town this spring/summer rather than thinking I have to set aside all of my mental energy for applications. I know someone who is putting on Cymbeline in June and that one is a blast.

Did you guys read that Buzzfeed millennial burnout article that went viral over the past few days? I was surprised that it touched on the academic job market and felt called out by how the writer knew her prospects after a PhD were slim but she felt she would be one of the lucky few (until she wasn’t). That definitely spoke right to my delusional self haha.

FWIW I filtered Chicago on the results page and last year the earliest interviews were Jan 22. So it does seem mighty early for a legit interview offer.

This thread has made me feel VERY disconnected from academia haha. Perils of working a corporate job for several years- I've only had exposure to my own research interests in quite a while. It's pretty refreshing to read this whole discussion and learn some new stuff!

While this is a valid concern, you're also well-primed to spin this as no one has written on this niche topic before, and you are the best qualified to do so because [insert quals here]. It's a great way to make yourself stand out in an SOP!

As an FYI because someone I know just changed careers because they were denied, only 1% of those who applied for public service loan forgiveness were accepted, so I agree with @lincoln.hawks to not count on any program, etc. https://www.forbes.com/sites/zackfriedman/2018/09/24/public-service-loan-forgiveness-rejected/#611c62b61824

I guess the danger would be if a program is more focused on research than teaching it would be a risk? But you should definitely be proud of it, and to me it makes sense to emphasize it if possible as teaching is usually the goal post-PhD. It definitely shows you're qualified!
