I got waitlisted for into my program to come to Japan but I got in! Once I arrived, the fact that i was waitlisted instead of beign accepted from the beginning was irrelevant. I do my job just as well as the people who had been accepted.
I think having "imposter syndrome" is so common in this field. Even after finishing school, it seems like a lot of people struggle with accepting that they CAN do the job and do it well. Know you're not alone in your feeling but also know it's unwarranted and you'll do great <3 Your waitlist is irrelevant now that you're in. Make the best of it!

Hmm. I did initially consider going the 3-year masters route because it seemed more efficient. I chose to do the UW postbac because I really wanted to stay in Seattle. I appreciated that UW gave me a comprehensive background in speech & hearing science so that I'd feel extremely prepared wherever I wound up for grad school. But if they had had a 3-year option, I would have been thrilled to skip the stress of applying for the masters program!! ?
I guess my advice would be, don't choose a 3-year program at a school you don't love just to save yourself the hassle of more applications in the future. But if you could really see yourself spending 3 years there, it's a pretty efficient way to go.

Both subreddits are helpful-- r/slpgradschool for this whole process, and r/slp will be especially helpful now for advice for clinic and placements!

Hey everyone! I committed to MGH this past week, and I'm looking for housing and roommates. If anyone wants to be message me, feel free to do so! Also, if anyone has any advice on finding both, that would be appreciated too! Thanks!

It has lots of resources!! There are a bunch of clinic rooms, audiology booths, supply closet, sensory closet, etc! of course, all university clinics don't get a lot of funding unless its through donations or the tuition is steep lol but honestly it's pretty good! I visited and toured and wish I took pictures but the description is all i can do for you. I hope it helps!

I thought I would have a decision too! I wanted to wait until Monday to see if any last funding came in but I might have to make my decision assuming that I don't have any.  I am still between UMD (if I got funding which is competitive), Emerson, and UMass (for that in-state tuition). I haven't turned down BU yet because it hurts too much to turn out one of my dream programs but I most likely will. I wish MGH was cheaper because I would totally go. I'm struggling but mostly because of the finances.

Yes! The clinic itself could be a bit nicer looking, to be honest- it's in a basement under one of the buildings where we'd be having classes, so the lighting is not the best. However, I think in many ways the ability to pursue the eight different tracks (generally two per semester) and the experiences we'd get from that pretty much make up for clinic appearances. We'd generally be doing two tracks at a time the first three semesters and then one track while doing our first external placement. So, we'd get so much of a variety of experience, from autism and AAC to child language to fluency to voice, etc. So while I've seen nicer-looking clinics, I'm super impressed by the opportunities of what we can do within the clinic!

Hi Samiam! I went to MGH IHP open house and fell in love with the program. It basically checked all the boxes and felt like the right fit for me. I was worried about tuition being do pricey, but since they have what I want, I think it's worth it. Overall there seemed to be an immense amount of opportunities offered by the school in adult, school, pediatric, and hospital work, which was a huge plus. I have a lot of interests in the field such as Autism, motor speech disorders, voice disorders, and medical slp, and I'm unsure which direction I am going to go, so all the opportunities for various areas in the SLP realm were important to me. I am really interested in their research labs and projects and definitely want to be a GA or volunteer in a few of the labs. Also, I really like that they give you 3 long term placements, and when I talked to the students, they all like their placements and thought they were being prepared well. They talk with each student and personalize placements for each of them based of their wants and needs. I really like the purpose of the impact center, and I like that they have you collaborate with other students in different health professions on a client to teach you the importance of each person's role and how working together benefits the client. I really like they have a huge faculty with various specialties and their elective courses they let you pick from seem really cool. A big factor was the feel of the faculty. The faculty seemed very warm, welcoming and supportive. Even though its a large cohort(60), they divide you into tiny groups and smaller groups to give you the adequate attention and support that you need. The faculty seemed that they work hard to support all students in the best way they can, and I got the impression they were very caring and understanding towards students. Overall it seemed like a very supportive based program that would challenge me and give me endless opportunities in the various areas in the SLP realm. I made a pros and cons list for each of my schools, and the only con for MGH IHP for me was tuition, whereas there were program based cons for my other schools. MGH IHP was always one of my top choices, but after visiting, I realized it was basically my dream program. Sorry that was so long! I just wrote everything I could think of off the top of my head. I hope some of this helps! Good luck with your decision. I know choosing as school is stressful AF. If you choose MGH IHP, I'll see you there ?

samiamslp got a reaction from bibliophile222 in NYU vs. Hofstra??
Okay, I guess I fit somewhere between the two other responses you've received. I agree with bibliophile to a point. Yes, ten years from now, what grad school you got your degree from won't matter. However, if either school provides you with opportunities that you need and that another school cannot, you should go to that program that provides you with the tools for your success, regardless if it is the cheaper one or not. I was just offered a grad assistantship to a program a love (a program which is now a LOT cheaper than some of the others I have been considering), but this is in a very different area of the country and doesn't have many connections for CFs and jobs in the part of the country I'm planning to head back to right after I graduate (the Northeast). It's an excellent program, but if I don't have as much opportunity for success as I would coming out of another program, I plan to choose a different program. So, I am assuming Hofstra is cheaper? What opportunities do both provide, both during your time there and after you graduate? If, for example, you specifically work in voice, do they both offer opportunities to do so in your externships? What about where their connections are? Does Hofstra's location mean that the majority of their connections are on Long Island, or do people work throughout the boroughs? If you want to do your CF outside the New York area, do both have connections to your desired location? My assumption is that NYU would have more students, and therefore more possibilities, outside NYC/LI, but my knowledge of Hosftra is limited! What about research-- is that something you'd want to pursue in the future? If so, do both offer the same opportunities there?
If both offer the same opportunities in all you are looking for, sure, please save yourself some money and go with the cheaper program. If one could job-start your career in a way that the other school cannot, be sure to add these as factors in your decision.

If you have the prereqs done/did CSD undergrad, it's 5 semesters, with only one summer: fall, spring, summer, fall, spring. I think they must do their credits differently, because I was also surprised about it only being 42 credits. I will be there on Friday for their Accepted Students Day, so I'm hoping to ask about that then.
