I had a Euro letter writer last cycle but she wound up sending things in before I got a chance to give any guidelines. Suggestion A is to ask your top school what things they expect from an LoR because your writer is inexperienced. Suggestion B would be to ask the professor that was here (forgot the username sorry) for advice. Suggestion C would be to ask them to be detailed. IMO LoRs should corroborate your interests, establish you as a competent scholar, bring attention to things you could not fit into the SoP, and praise you so you don’t have to do it yourself. Since everyone is getting letters that say we’re great, I understand that an excellent one identifies your qualities and make you sound unique. That said, people have said that LoRs all sound the same so the important thing is that they fit in and don’t stand out for being less enthusiastic than the rest.

    This was all conjecture though.

Not interviewing, but considering wearing a black top with a patterned skirt (got a couple on sale from Forever 21: oxblood, a twill/plaid, and a burnt orange) and tights. Maybe with a blazer? What are you guys's thoughts on shoes?

I'm worried I'd be way too overdressed in a dress.

Ooooo this look sounds so cute and polished. I don’t think it’s too dressy. Brb going to to forever 21 rn lol

Anyone else have that one school they're getting anxious about?

While I still have UConn, UPenn, UW, and UOregon left to hear back from, all my anxiety and hope are channeled right now into my waitlist sitch at Loyola and my interview at SMU. I think UConn and UofO are already implied rejections anyway.

Thank you so much for the kind words! CONGRATULATIONS on your own acceptances as well! It looks like we're both waiting to hear back from Berkeley and UPenn now, ugh. ?

Historically Berkeley notifiers rejections in March so personally I’m planning for that

but UPenn- who knows??!! I’m rooting for you!

Hey everyone! Longtime lurker here. I only just found out about the forum and I honestly wish I'd been here from the beginning. Chatting with people in a similar purgatory state seems far more productive than refreshing the results page over and over.

Received an acceptance and my first rejection yesterday. I know I should be thrilled at the acceptance, but the rejection has honestly left me quite disappointed. Ugh. I wish we could learn why we were turned down though, though I'm sure that would not be of most emotional help either haha.

    Welcome!

I think it would help because the truth is your app was clearly EXCEPTIONAL based on your acceptance. The margins are stacked against us, you should be proud as hell!

it’s the best! (and the fact that you loved it in december is... extremely impressive, haha.) i’m obviously biased but it’s an exciting piece of news for sure. fingers crossed!

Haha I grew up in Idaho so I can do snow no problem. But also that city is THE SHIT (sorry, I swear a lot in real life, tried to keep in classy on here for a long time but...I am who I am lol). Also the rent prices, coming from sac, it’s so hopeful. Tell me all your favorite things to do and see in Chi Town (do locals actually call it that?).

I appreciate that!  ?  Holding out hope for Cornell; I felt that it was my strongest of my applications this year and best fit (also my dream program!) so hopefully in a couple of weeks I'll be busting out the champagne!  Congrats on your acceptances, happy for you that you have a couple in the bag already!!

Rooting for you new friend!!! Get that dream program! And thank you ?

Ha that was me, just an attempt at humor there as I got gunned down again in this application season-no professional program would actually send an email like that.  ?  The email itself, though generic, was really nice!

Hahaha I’m relived but also wish you had better news. Not sure what it says about my responses that I thought this was real except...some have been real shitty ?

I think my big question for current students is: what do you wish you had asked about or known when making your decision? Anything undergrads wouldn’t have the foresight to consider about PhD life when applying?

    This.

I’m also very curious about the feel of various departments. My undergrad dept felt like family, almost immediately. How do you gage feel though from the outside?

congratulations!!! as someone living practically right by loyola (and dreading moving!), can vouch for it being an AMAZING place to be ;) rooting for the waitlist to move for you!

I visited Chicago in December, including checking out Rogers Park, and I fell, head over heels, in love. What a wonderful place to live. I’m sorry you’re going to have to move but I’m celebrating your next step!

Hey Kendall, to be clear I have no intent to be offensive. It blew up my mind if you (or the others) think the other way.

You started attacking people without knowing the time stamps of the downvotes in the first place, so don't try educating others if you behave the same way

    I didn’t attack you at all. ✌️

    I responded thoughtfully to you.

@homie you didn’t like the reaction you got so you...gave it?

Wanting to have every thread of info to make yourself feel in control and wishing everyone well are not mutually exclusive, at all.

Yes, it is offensive, but furthermore supremely unhelpful, to judge how other people find comfort in this distinctly uncomfortable process. Again, if you don’t find solace in this thread, bow out. No one is stopping you.

I got into UConn PhD (not on the board yet). I received the email about 6-7 hours ago. I don’t even know what I’m feeling. I’d completely accepted another shut-out and was talking myself into alternative plans that now it doesn’t seem real and I don’t think it has even hit me yet.

For future reference, it is a 5 year offer to TA from Y1. Specific duties will be sent in the future. I’m an African-Americanist. If anyone wants info PM me. Also if anyone has info on UConn (like CoL, campus, etc.), please PM me, too.

Thank you to everyone who was supportive through this process. Other than my wife you’re the first people I’ve told.

    I am THRILLED for you!!!!!!!!!
