Welp, the fact that I didn't get an interview email from Chicago has officially activated A New Level™ of decision anxiety. Catch me deploying the dubious coping mechanism of reading and rereading Sedgwick for the next several hours while eating cookies!
I'm right there with you, @Bopie5

Anyone been watching Tidying Up on Netflix? I found a new hobby to get me through the next few weeks- throwing things away! I've already done my closet and all of my makeup. I'm telling myself I'm making it easier to move wherever I end up getting in ?

Anyone else here a fan of Mary Oliver? I'm devastated to hear she passed away.
Yes. I’ve just been reading her poetry since I found out this morning, feeling very sad but also grateful for her talent and outlook on life.

I'm so excited to find Drag Race fans in this thread! Reply with your three favorite Drag Race queens; my faves are BenDeLaCreme, Manila Luzon, Bob the Drag Queen!
Bianca, Bob, and Alaska. But I love so many of them. Saw Bianca a few years ago in Sacramento and holy hell she is scathemazing.

Unrelated but has anyone seen the thread in waiting it out called "that awkward moment when..."? It is making me feel a lot better about almost sending in my UPenn SoP with "Penn State" written in it, or that one SoP in which I said "additionally" twice in the same paragraph. Plus, it's hilarious.

Has anyone seen The End of the F$cking World on Netflix? The soundtrack is serious music goals.

i can't think of what he would've been trying to type before my name and the sentence is perfectly clear otherwise...
Well that’s just disappointing then. I probably wouldn’t be able to resist pointing out how completely inappropriate it was ??♀️

he called me dear: "yes dear Jane." (my name isn't jane.)
Could it have been an auto correct error?

This gets me wondering--what kind of music do you all like? We've talked about books and movies, but not much about music yet.
I like classic rock, especially bands like ELO, and Fleetwood Mac. I also like folksy stuff like Fleet Foxes. When I'm studying and writing I listen to classical music, I can enjoy it without being distracted by it.
Honestly though, I rarely listen to music these days, I mostly listen to podcasts. I'm super in to My Favorite Murder, and shows about medical history like Sawbones and This Podcast will Kill You. I also like Last Podcast on the Left and Shittown. I'm a huge true crime fan.

I'm starting to wish I'd applied to UIUC just to have an answer so soon! ?
My thoughts precisely.

Congrats @Englishtea1!!!! I'm so glad the first result on here is an acceptance. Looking forward to hearing what other programs you get in to!
Have fun, @Bopie5, I've never heard of that band, gotta check them out after seeing how much my fellow gradcafs love them.

My best friend is German and she’s trying to buy a ticket to visit this summer (we rotate years, I was in Germany last summer) and I’m like yeahhhhh I could be in Connecticut or LA, please do not buy a plane ticket!

Idk about all of you but I’m getting pretty tired of the fact that I experience time passing at a normal rate! Wish I could just KNOW decisions already and move on with my life one way or another.
THISSSSSS
I keep looking at the date and just basically being offended by it.

I took a Dystopian Lit course this past fall! Which books did you read in yours?
Technically is was a utopia and dystopia class. We read Plato’s Republic, Utopia, Looking Backward, and the two I mentioned. I feel like there was another text in there that quarter but I can’t remember what the heck it was. What did you read in your class?
I think as a woman and a leftist reading old utopic texts made me see just how much a utopia for some is always a dystopia for others, and how that’s shaped culture since the dawn of time. I can tell you it was a relief to get through the pre-20th century texts ?. But I really enjoyed the class overall.

oh hm my reading is all over the place, so i can't say 100%! but i think i MOST enjoy dystopian novels (favorite is 1984 lol, i'm THAT girl). I also love classics (i LOVE of mice and men... god...), sci fi (favorite is do androids dream of electric sheep? by philip dick, it kinda crosses over into dystopian), and nonfiction historical music scene books (mainly about punk, straight edge hardcore, metal, etc). anything angsty or depressing is good. nabokov is a great author. yeah but i love random books from all genres pretty much lol
EDIT: other fave books of mine include roses by leila meacham (a random romance, just because), the little prince by antoine de saint exupery (it is so deep and innocent, just a gem), and the joy luck club OR the kitchen god's wife, both by amy tan (i love chinese cultural fiction bc im chinese)
I HAVE SO MUCH I WANT TO READ GODDAMMIT AND SO LITTLE TIME
I took a dystopian lit class last spring and really enjoyed Never Let Me Go and Woman on the Edge of Time. Very different but good. NLMG is a masterpiece, IMO.
1984 is incredible, we should all be THAT girl about it.

I also took German, which I love, but it’s not really helpful to my research. I just downloaded duolingo to start learning Spanish and so far I like it a lot. However, I took several years of Spanish as a kid so it might be more helpful to me as I’m mostly brushing up at this point.
I’ve also thought about taking a spring or summer quarter of Spanish at a JC, since it’s pretty cheap here. Maybe that would be an option?
Viel Glück!

Oh my....here we go:
I was compulsively checking all my applications today even though I knew nothing new was gonna be there (as one does).
I check CUNY, and nearly entered cardiac arrest. It said my application was incomplete, and incomplete applications cannot be considered.
What made it incomplete you ask? It said my GRE scores were not received. The thing is I sent my GRE scores in November, and every other place has received them.
I naturally panicked and emailed both ETS and CUNY admissions, but has anyone else had this problem before? Is this somehow my fault? Will they hold it against me even if there was some sort of mix up? Have I officially dug a grave for my poor little CUNY application?
Edit: It should also be noted that when I view my actual application and go to the "Check your application" tab, it says I've completed everything I need for my application and that it's been successfully submitted. Does that mean there's any hope that this is just a mishap? My GRE scores still show as “incomplete” on my Johns Hopskins application. I’ve emailed them several times and only ever receive the same response which is that there is a “glitch” that should be resolved in a week or two.
jesus take the wheel, I’m done worrying about it at this point.

Hey everyone, full-time lurker here! I just posted a topic panicking about one of my apps so I thought I might as well introduce myself ?
I graduated last May, this is my first application cycle, and oh my goodness has it been a stressful experience. I'm interested in Modernist and fin-de-siecle literature, really love phenomenology and affect theory!
What are you guys doing to pass the time and/or ward off endless anxiety?Every season of Downton Abbey is on Prime now, just saying...

It makes me think of this article "I Stand Here Limpiando: Maternal Knowledge, Chicana Subjectivity, and Mother-Daughter Bonding" by Christina Herrera. It's all about recognizing the communicative, inter-generational power of women's labor. Super cool stuff.
