Can anyone tell me how common cockroach infestations are? Also I’m wondering about scorpions. Are they just a fact of life in the summer?

So exciting! I can’t afford to visit my friend in Germany this year so she’s coming to see me in Dallas once I get settled. Not exactly the same, haha. Have so much fun! Good luck with Irish, that language is amazing and, imo, terrifying. I’d really like to learn a little of it, so I’ll be curious to hear from you if it’s as tricky as I’ve built up in my mind. And yessss about the relief of returning to school after a year. I reorganized my collection of research articles in celebration. Typing that I realize that is a weird thing to do, but....well you guys understand.

Hey y’all! Returning to my favorite corner of the interwebs to chat preparation for starting grad school this fall. What are y’all doing? I don’t mean strictly school related stuff, perhaps you’re taking the time to hang out with friends and family you’ll be moving away from/read what you want to read/travel, etc. Personally I’m doing most of the above, but I also contacted my future advisor to ask what he’d recommend I do to set myself up for beginning coursework. I’m looking at taking an intro to Spanish course over the summer, and I also got a list of reading to do from Dr. Sae-Saue, which I’ve started on excitedly. Right now I’m reading The Revolt of the Cockroach People and City of Night. What are you all up to?!?!

I was in communication with Jonathan Foltz and he was extremely communicative, even getting me in touch with a current grad to ask questions, and answering my questions himself as well. He always got back to me within like a day. Try him!

Yeah my initial waitlist email (and I’m sure yours as well, of course) said they may not alert until April 16th...??? made it easier to decline them, that’s for sure. I hope you don’t have to wait much longer!!!

I applied (the first time) in my last year of undergrad. I highly recommend you do the same. Firstly, there are some schools that have application fee waivers that you won’t qualify for if you’re no longer in school. Secondly-and I know this sucks- but you may very well not get in the first go round. So that gap year, should you take one, could then turn into two or even three. For me, being out of school is agony, so I really didn’t want to wait. Since I didn’t get good offers last year, I still had to take a year, and it’s been, frankly, miserable. I’m so excited to not go through that limbo for an additional year! Being in school still, you have fresh writing assignments you can tweak, and connections with professors and what not for letters of req as well as, hopefully, lots of feedback on your application materials. I’d say if you want to apply, just do it! All that being said, I’m an older student with a lot of working/living experience already, so for me a gap year was really just returning to the wretched working world I escaped in undergrad. Other folks with different experiences may get a lot out of that year, and I wouldn’t want to negate that. Good luck!!!

YAAYYYYYY @cassidyaxx!!!!! Meanwhile I just received my third letter of rejection from Johns Hopkins. Guess they saw from my app what a tenacious go-getter I am and they’re real worried I won’t take no for an answer and just show up for class the first day.

I would definitely reach out to your POI to connect with them and introduce yourself. I would direct queries about funding though to the DGS, not faculty.

Anyone else feel kind of...weird...after making a decision? Not about the decision, but about this whole application process being concluded for good? All the hope and stress and self doubt and whatever else having resulted in a reality you couldn’t have really predicted months/years ago. It’s...just weird, haha.
