  1. Looks like three out of four rejections for me will come next week. Well, it has been a nice journey waiting for you guys UCLA, WashU, and CUNY. Gotta keep my fingers crossed for four remaining apps

  2. I woke up to an email from UAlbany, got really anxious because I saw the title "General Application Material," and it turned out to be an invitation to a webinar. Albany has been teasing me lately with their invitations to virtual grad student meetup, and now this? Come on.

If someone gets accepted without an interview then the department would not have done interviews in general... do you mean you know of someone who got accepted at a place that did interviews without having to do one himself/herself? if so, I'd be really curious to know where this happened

I don't know for sure, as he did not tell me what school he was accepted to, but he did say that he was not interviewed but got acceptance. This was a couple of years ago so it may not necessarily apply to this cycle. Anyway, I sent the email to CUNY Sociology department to inquire about interview and admissions to make sure about what I asked you.

I'm assuming that is the case, because it would be rather unfair to extend an offer to someone who didn't go through the interview process and for example reject someone else who did. But I would recommend you email them just to make sure and get a definite answer.

Sounds about right, but I just wanted to confirm this because I have seen people get accepted even with no interview. Thank you for the information!

FYI to those who were interviewed by CUNY:

They have finished finalizing the list of students they intend to extend offers to, are waiting on final approval from the administration and will be sending offers out early next week

Do you know if they only extend the offer to the people who they interviewed?

  6. To anyone who applied to Baylor: Baylor Sociology will hold the virtual recruitment days on Feb 21-23, and GSD told me that they will be in contact with applicants next week. Man I am nervous now.

I feel so understood by this. I have this fantastic book I want to read, but I can't manage to get myself to open it because of all of the feelings of everything.

I totally feel you. I mean, I have a thesis to write but I just cannot focus and my productivity level is at all-time low due to the anxiety that is plaguing my everyday life. Like how many more weeks do we have to wait?

  8. I am now extremely anxious about CUNY, because I heard nothing about the interviews which seem to be prevalent among applicants and it has not historically done interviews before. I wonder if I have not heard anything about interview, would it mean that I basically have no chance?

Hey! I was accepted into WashU. Spoke to a Professor I’m going to be working with if I end up going there. They only admitted 5 students so I’m assuming if you haven’t gotten a waitlist or acceptance email, you might not have got in. They sent out acceptances and waitlists last week.

    Thank you for the info!

  10. I wonder if acceptances to UCLA are sent in waves. I still did not get any update, which probably means I am rejected, but I am just keeping my hopes up. Meanwhile, why is there no update on other schools? Anyone know about WaShu?

Edit. I just sent an email to WaShu about when to expect any decision. Hopefully I get an answer soon.

@FrigidSky701 Are you familiar with Columbia's program on forced migration? It's in the school of Public Health, but does some really cool work!

Not really! My research is more on voluntary immigration + identity of second generation immigrants. I never thought about even applying for a Master's at Columbia because... it's New York City and I don't think I could afford living there with all the tuition fee. But here I am, applying to CUNY and wishing to get in...

  12. Hello! I have applied to UCLA, UC Berkeley (Ethnic Studies though), Baylor, CUNY, George Mason, Syracuse, SUNY Albany, and WashU. I am currently finishing up MA in Religious Studies, and I also have some background in Anthropology. So my research area is largely based on qualitative. I am more interested in migration and ethnic studies, with impact of COVID-19 on hand as well. I really really wish to get in SOMEWHERE, as this is my second cycle... How are others coping with the current situation? Looks like this page is totally dead.

  13. Hello.

I am currently working on my applications for Fall 2021 application cycle, and although there are a lot of schools that made the GRE optional or not required, I still have to send the scores to some schools (UCLA, George Mason for fellowship consideration, Baylor, UAlbany).

Standardized tests have never been my strong side, and I ended up getting not so stellar scores on two tests I took (159V/150Q/4.0AW, 154V/155Q/4.5AW)

What scores should I send in to the schools that I am applying to? I honestly think I have good matches with profs there, and my SOP seems strong enough.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

It has a good reputation and placement record particularly for students in American Religion. There is a brilliant student in my program (Northwestern) a couple years behind me who went to MSU. I also know someone in anthropology at NYU who works on religion and has her MA from MSU's program. As far as "secular" MA programs in the discipline go, it's a great option.

Thank you for your reply. This really helps. I hope I do adjust well to MSU once I go there.

It's such a small cohort that I can't really say much in terms of reputation. That said, I've met MSU alums at probably every conference I've attended. They've mostly ended up at state schools but I know current alums at Iowa and Indiana. I've also met alums that went onto Drew and Iliff, and a spattering that used their MA and BA to go onto doc programs in Poli Sci, Psych, and Socio - with a research focus on religion.

People have seemed happy there and spoke highly of the experience! Will you get a chance to visit and do you know of funding yet?

I probably won't get a chance to visit because I am currently not in the States, and as for funding I think I can get about 30% of the tuition. I would love to visit actually. I may ask them if I can.
