  1. My GPA was similar to yours. You can retake some classes or in my case, I started and finished a Masters in Special Education. I finished that program with a 3.85. I applied for a 3nd time to a SLP program after I finished my M.ED. Much to my surprise, I was accepted to one program?I think getting a masters showed I was able to do graduate level work. You need to shoot for at least 300 on the GRE and at least a 4 in writing. Good luck?

Just found out my school would be about 20k a semester vs 20k a year. Boy did i misunderstand my financial aid letter. This has me wanting to give up on school all together.

Was this the only school you got into? Eighty thousand for grad school would give me pause too. If you don’t have undergrad loans, it would be at the top end of what I would borrow. Any chance you could take a gap year and reapply to schools that are more affordable?

  3. I went from Northern Virginia to Radford, VA, population around 16,000. Was it a culture shock, yes, but I survived. I was busy with class work and weekends were busy with studying. I did make it home on occasion, maybe 2-3 times a semester. I only lived there for 3 semesters because I was able to do my externship at home. I wouldn’t let the size of a town determine where I went to school, it’s not forever?

Thank you for your input! So nice to know someone else is also doing the same. So, I'm unsure as to whether I'll be going 3x a week or 5. Let's say it's 5 (I also live where it snows, ugh) would that be crazy?

When I was in grad school, we had a couple of people who commuted that far. I know a few times, they slept on others sofas if it was a late night or bad weather. I was happy to help out?

  5. I applied to 10 programs right from undergrad with a GPA below 3.0. Surprise! I didn’t get into any. I worked, volunteered at a hospital SLP department, reapplied to 6 programs, didn’t get into any. I then started a Masters in Special Education, lived at home, worked and saved money. It was a 2 year program and I finished it with a 3.85 gpa. I still had the dream of becoming an SLP but was afraid of reapplying. My parents encouraged me to give it one last shot, so I applied to 3 programs in VA, where I currently live. I only applied to state schools because I wasn’t willing to take on more then $30,000 in debt. Surprise! I was admitted to 1 school and rejected from the other 2 but 1 was all I needed. I believe my LORs, SOP and the fact that I already had a masters helped get me admitted. Good luck?

Thank you! I've heard that about Elmhurst. I'm actually taking my pre-requisites there right now. There were way fewer early admits this year. I think only 5 or so? If I get waitlisted at midwestern I'll definitely send on my resume and personal statement. They seem to be going slower right now and aren't up to my interview date yet for acceptances.

I'm now over 3 weeks, but they still haven't reached my interview date! Last I saw of acceptances were February 4th I think and I interviewed February 7th. I interviewed with several classmates and no one has heard anything yet. I called on Friday to ask about the status of my application and when I might hear back and she said they are still reviewing it and she wasn't sure when the admissions committee would be meeting again. It's so exhausting getting nervous checking my phone and email!

I'm within the limits of all the schools according to edFind, but I'm not sure how accurate edFind is...

This is my biggest hope-- that my teaching experience will be counted as experience related to the field. Where did you end up going??

I graduated from Radford in 2016. I had applied to Longwood, UVA and Radford. I visited both UVA and Longwood. Radford’s open house didn’t work with my schedule so I didn’t get a chance to visit. I thought for sure I would get into Longwood but didn’t even get waitlisted. My GPA for my Special Education masters was 3.8, my undergrad gpa, under 3.0? Good luck and don’t lose hope?

  7. Your stats look great. Some schools actually like students who have some work experience under their belt and are a little bit older. I didn’t get in until my 3nd try. During those years, I received a Masters in Special Education. My mom and dad encouraged me to apply one more time. I applied to 3 schools and got into one but that’s all I needed. Anyway, the director of the program said my age and degree helped my application? Good luck!
