Bmay80 got a reaction from ChaiTeaSLP in Plan B
My plan B was getting a Masters in Special Education. I accomplished that and applied a third and final time to a SLP program. I got in and 2 years later, finished grad school to become a SLP. I’m so grateful?

I applied to 10 programs right from undergrad with a GPA below 3.0. Surprise! I didn’t get into any. I worked, volunteered at a hospital SLP department, reapplied to 6 programs, didn’t get into any. I then started a Masters in Special Education, lived at home, worked and saved money. It was a 2 year program and I finished it with a 3.85 gpa. I still had the dream of becoming an SLP but was afraid of reapplying. My parents encouraged me to give it one last shot, so I applied to 3 programs in VA, where I currently live. I only applied to state schools because I wasn’t willing to take on more then $30,000 in debt. Surprise! I was admitted to 1 school and rejected from the other 2 but 1 was all I needed. I believe my LORs, SOP and the fact that I already had a masters helped get me admitted. Good luck?

If you’re struggling with some material, talk with the professor sooner rather then later. In my grad school experience, the profs wanted you to succeed too.

Grow a thick skin. --Your supervisors will critique you in every way possible, suck it up. It's a learning experience...even if they hurt your feelings, their opinions do not define who you are. Your laptop is your lifeline. Connect your school email to every technology you own especially your phone. Phonetics and speech-language development is worth knowing. Get used to not being "perfect" in graduate school. You won't get kicked out for getting a B ? Graduate school is not hard, it's just time consuming.  Prepping for an articulation session takes longer than two hours (until you know your kiddo quite well and/or perfected a few habits). Your classmates/professors/staff members are your colleagues. You do not have to like them but be respectful. Do not burn bridges. Treat this experience like a job because it is. Do not gossip. Research is so important in graduate school. Learn how to read articles. Be flexible. Everything you planned for in your session will most likely by altered by that little 5-year-old in front of you. Another clinician is currently using an item you needed? Find a different toy/activity that can still elicit what you want. Your client is having a bad day? you might end up tossing your lessons away and doing whatever to get them back on track. You will find yourself doing the most silliest things ever just for that speech production.  Even after a month of therapy, you'll still be nervous to see your clients and have NO clue what you are doing. LOL. That two minutes you have until your session starts is still a lot of time. You'll adjust to working under pressure. You're a natural, trust me. You know more than you think you do.  GOOD LUCK!

My GPA was similar to yours. You can retake some classes or in my case, I started and finished a Masters in Special Education. I finished that program with a 3.85. I applied for a 3nd time to a SLP program after I finished my M.ED. Much to my surprise, I was accepted to one program?I think getting a masters showed I was able to do graduate level work. You need to shoot for at least 300 on the GRE and at least a 4 in writing. Good luck?

Bmay80 got a reaction from samiamslp in help!! are loans worth it for an amazing school??
I would go to the cheaper school. I was told, ideally, your college loan debt should be no larger then your first year salary. Somewhere else, they advised no more then your salary, after working 5 years. My parents sat down with me a showed me an amortization chart with my loan amount, interest and years to pay back. It was eye opening for sure.

Agree with @Bmay80 in terms of looking at an amortization calc. like this https://studentloanhero.com/calculators/student-loan-deferment-calculator/
It is important to remember that you will be charged interest while you are in school, the only deferred part are the payments. So if you borrow 60k in three years you will owe 70k and will be on the hook for around 800$ a month for a decade. ouch. Also remember that at some point you might want to buy a house and your student loan debt counts against your DTI ratio so might be a deal breaker.
    good luck!

I went from Northern Virginia to Radford, VA, population around 16,000. Was it a culture shock, yes, but I survived. I was busy with class work and weekends were busy with studying. I did make it home on occasion, maybe 2-3 times a semester. I only lived there for 3 semesters because I was able to do my externship at home. I wouldn’t let the size of a town determine where I went to school, it’s not forever?

I have spent many hours looking at GradCafe seeing is there was hope for a low gpa to get into grad school for Speech Therapy. I am beyond happy to announce that I got accepted right out of undergrad into Adelphi this up coming fall semester. My gpa is a 2.9 and pretty average GRE scores. If you are worried and stressing out, I promise it will come to you! Look up schools with higher acceptance rates and play a numbers game!

When I was in grad school, we had a couple of people who commuted that far. I know a few times, they slept on others sofas if it was a late night or bad weather. I was happy to help out?

honestly I decided a cheaper state school, as long as it's ASHA accredited they're all the same in my eyes. I'm leaving grad school with less than $20,000 in debt for 5 semesters, feels like a win to me.

For me there was only one school I even considered going to due to financial and personal reasons. I felt that focusing on one application really allowed me to be the best candidate possible for that program. And I was accepted!
