That should be the information you’re looking for. I’d caution against relying too much on that article in your case, because UC-Davis has risen in the rankings a lot since the 90s I think (they’re like 17 now, right?).

For what it’s worth, I definitely understand your concern. I think you really should consider where you’d like to see yourself end up. It’s an obnoxious system, but it does seem like in virtually all cases you won’t be able to get a TT job at an institution ranked higher than where you did your PhD. In some cases, people seem to move up later in their career, though.

Nope. It's been a while, but UT is a massive institution, so it wouldn't surprise me if there's a lot of bureaucratic hullabaloo involved that's holding things up.

The DGS for Ohio State said funding decisions would come out the third week of Feb, and Ohio State released admissions about the same time as UT. I’m thinking it’ll probably be a similar timeline, but who knows

Howdy y'all, welcome to another episode of "What Big Name Schools are Going to Drop Some Decisions This Next Week????

Standard caveat (to be read aloud super quickly) : There are always reasons why things aren't the same year-to-year, like new having a new DGS, someone being out on vacation or an emergency, or conference timings. It is way above my paygrade to verify whether or not any of these things are at play. I do not and cannot guarantee that any results will come when they are predicted to off of historical data -- and frankly, if I could, I would be monetizing the heck out of it.

These are ordered pretty much by when I expect to hear things back and that could possibly be next week:

UCLA: Since 2011, results have always come by the first week of February. By all estimates, this year is on the late side for an otherwise pretty consistent school. Forecast: Very soon

UC Davis: Same deal as UCLA.

Wash U St. Louis: I've seen as late as Feb 15, which as you would know it, is indeed next week.  Forecast: some point next week. There's more variance across years for WUSTL, so don't put more money on it coming out on Monday versus Friday.

UNC for those outside of the American subfield: Not sure if any of these have come out yet? The results page only indicates the American subfield. I haven't seen anything come later than about Feb 13 historically. Forecast: some point next week, possibly divided by subfield

Cornell: Another high variance school. Have come out as late as Feb 26 but more often than not in about the second week of Feb. Forecast: you can get your hopes up but please not too much that we'll know by the end of the week

Stanford: Looks like they try to stick around the mid-point of February give or take a few days, but have historically been as late as Feb 20th and as early as late January. Forecast: I don't know about anyone else, but I am ready to have one of my greatest hopes and dreams crushed pretty likely by Friday of this week as the Stanford math department announces that they have discovered the smallest non-zero number, and that number happens to be the same number as the Political Science department acceptance rate

University of Pennsylvania: Looks like they try to keep it approximately around Feb 15-20. There's a bit of variance though. Forecast: More likely around the 18th, but possible late this next week.

Columbia: More variance in more recent years, but looking at the historical release record as a whole, they seem to aim for mid-February. Forecast: We could be getting this as early as Monday next week but also maybe not for two more weeks, who knows.

Vanderbilt: I believe interview requests have already gone out, and conventional wisdom is that at Vandy, no interview=rejection. They have been as early as next week but I think the interviews aren't until next week (it could be cool if someone confirmed this, I didn't apply to Vanderbilt) edit started earlier this week, so decisions probably won't come until later. Forecast: The last three years point to Feb 20-something, this is probably something worth asking in your interview if you want a better answer than this magic 8 ball I'm using an official answer

Georgetown:  These went out Feb 17 this year and last year. Previously they've been a trickle starting around now. Forecast: probably not until the week of Feb 17, though if we get any notification of like only 1 or 2 people hearing back, don't freak out too much

Notably missing: Harvard (will almost definitely make us wait two more weeks) and Yale (has released as early as about 2/14 but that does not seem to be the recent trend. It seems like they like 2/20 more these days).

I’m an IR UNC admit, so at least some decisions outside of American have been released

  4. I started the application process with a diagnostic score of like 160V/149Q and ended with 168/160. I used Magoosh and a few practice books. I think Magoosh is like $130 for 6 months or something, and I would really look into that. I hadn’t done much math since high school so I needed something more than just practice problems, and the video lessons on Magoosh were super helpful for me (they also have hundreds of practice problems). This is a much cheaper option and worked well for me.

Also, I just wanted to say that the process for applying to these programs is grueling and often idiosyncratic. I don’t think spending a ton of time reworking your SoP or writing sample now is necessary—just be proud of yourself for putting together a good application and give yourself a break. There’s plenty of time to prepare for next cycle.

Maybe they’re doing it differently this year, who knows

  6. Maybe I’m wrong, but it looks like so far only one batch of acceptances has gone out from Northwestern. This is not, at least from what I’ve seen, how they did it last year. Also, surely there would be more acceptances listed on the results page if all had been sent out. There are almost certainly acceptances left to be released, and I would not worry until after at least one more round of acceptances comes out.

Anyone have confirmation on the Northwestern rejection? Seems early based on when they sent them out in previous years.

I think there's a good chance it's just a troll. Two of them say via email, one says via website - that seems weird to me. Who knows.. I have not yet received an email and my application portal still just says submitted.

  8. Just my opinion, but I think it’s really unlikely Northwestern has sent out all of their acceptances at this point. They usually admit between 25-30 each year, and I think we would see more activity via the results page if this many acceptances had already been sent. Also, as others have mentioned, the results page from last year indicates that Northwestern sends out acceptances over a period of a few days.

Hi all, first-time applier here (Comparative Politics PhD applicant). What's the general wisdom on writing samples: should I include works cited/appendices in the page count? Should I include them at all?

This is also my first time applying, so keep that in mind. I have included the endnotes in each sample. I have pages/words to spare in each case, so there’s really no reason for me not to. For every school that mentions this on the website that I’ve seen, it has been noted that references do not count in the word/page count.

  10. I’m working on my applications now and am trying to decide on a writing sample. I know it will be a portion of my thesis, but various schools have different limits. My question is this: will it look bad to programs with a 50 page limit if I submit a sample that’s only 35 pages (in order to comply with other limits)? I think it’s really unlikely that the adcomms are going to read 50 pages, and in order to increase from 35 to 50 I’d have to add a new chapter of my thesis and I don’t have another analytical chapter that is less than 20 or so pages. Thoughts?
