My downstairs neighbour went to Munk and works at GAC now, FWIW.

I'm already fairly settled in Ottawa (government job, my partner works at a law firm, etc) so Munk was never really on my radar, but the cost definitely put me right off (you can go to Cambridge for that kind of cash).

I have no doubt it's a good program, but I don't see the point in paying 50k. If you are interested in international affairs Ottawa is definitely the place to be due to the endless events and opportunities here - government and non government included.

    Hey @snowflake96,

I’m curious as to what made you chose GPSIA over NPSIA or Munk?

In all honesty Munk was my first choice but looking back I realize that I made the right choice going to GSPIA instead. Not only were the fees extremely high going to Munk, I couldn't really find solid information on the job prospects upon graduating, and whether alumni from the Munk program managed to get solid jobs out of it. But it was mostly the cost of the program, and I didn't want to go 50,000+ in debt for a 2 years masters program. With GSPIA, there's more international opportunities for a cheaper cost. We get matched with a senior fellow at the beginning of the year which is usually someone that works in diplomacy or international affairs. Several of the senior fellows have been correspondents in DC or worked on missions with the UN. Although we're matched with a senior fellow, we can always talk to the other fellows if their career interests you and you have questions about different opportunities, career advice etc. My program has an embassy internship program where students can intern at an embassy abroad in the summer, fall, or winter months. Some of these positions include working the Permanent Mission if Canada to the UN in New York or working with NATO in Brussels, as well as other embassies in Asia, Europe, and Latin America.

We also have a coop program. The majority of people end up getting coops with the federal government but there are some people that get coops with international organizations.  NPSIA is a reputable program but it didn't really intrigue me as much as GSPIA or Munk. I do find the fact that you can specialize in different areas interesting though. I would say based on my research I found that most people that graduated from NPSIA or GSPIA got jobs in international affairs/policy, while I couldn't really find that information for Munk although I'm sure the program is excellent. I guess my greatest advice to those applying this application season is to focus less on the title and prestige of the school - although that can be important too, and more on what you desire to get out of the program itself and the experiences and opportunities that would be awarded to you. Most employers focus on the skills and experience you have rather than just simply the name of the school you went to.

If anyone else wants to know about applying to these programs and my experience so far, feel free to reply or PM me!

Hey everyone. I've been reading through this forum for a while but finally decided to create an account. I have a few questions and I apologize if I am repeating questions that have been already asked. I was accepted to the GSPIA program at Ottawa. I personally am bilingual but it is more verbal than written. I grew up as a half French half American in the southwestern part of the United States so personally I didn't have many people to write with in French and mostly just spoke in French to family. How hard are the French classes in the GSPIA program? My next question is to do with the CO-OPs.  I am a permanent resident of Canada and will be applying for citizenship in July (that's when I qualify to apply). Would I be limited on where I can do co-ops due to not being a citizen till possibly next July? My last question is I was wondering if there is a Facebook group for incoming GSPIA students and where would I go to find this group?

    There's a Facebook page called UOttawa GSPIA/ESAPI !

After days of research, I found gspia is really worth it- less than half of the price of Munk, research oriented, federal govt coop, overseas exchange, generous scholarship, French, etc

btw, the best schools in IR in Canada according to a professional survey among Canadians IR experts is:

    Npsia

    munk

    Gpsia

Is there a Facebook page for GSPIA yet?

IN AT MUNK!! I have been waiting so long to be able to post this. 3k scholarship from them. Stats: 81.5% average, extensive EC's, 4LOR's. I really did not think I would be able to do this or get in. To anyone out there reading this, YOU CAN DO IT. Just work hard. Congrats to everyone else and good luck to all (MPP not MGA)

Did you get an email? Is it the MGA or a collaborative program?

That's super frustrating considering they have pushed back the deadline every year. Two years ago it was in February, then it was in mid-March, and now end of March or early April? That's way too late...

Yeah, it's super frustrating. Like I said before, I still hope that we start to hear back sooner rather than later, but it's something beyond anybody's control other than the admissions team. I also feel like due to the new video component, the application/decision process this year is a lot more stringent and highly selective than before.

I am not sure what's causing the delay...last year decisions were sent out March 9th...so to say 'end of March' seems odd. Was it the glitch over the video essay? Did they really get that many more applicants this year? I guess its pointless to speculate.  And I am not sure if a university like UofT (biggest in Canada) feels pressure for anything...

Yeah, its a really inconvenient time to start rolling out offers of admission. If I remember correctly from the open house Munk receives 500+ applications a year. Now combine that with the fact that they added a video component. Maybe the video component has slowed down the process? I'm trying not to speculate too much otherwise it will drive me nuts. All we can do is keep waiting.

I emailed Munk and was basically told late March to early April for admission decisions...and then curiously was advised to ask the school whose deadline is the 15th if they were either flexible or if there was a penalty if I canceled by acceptance...I'm pulling my hair out over this...because as someone mentioned in an another post..its a small world (IR/poli sci) ..what if I accept, then ditch ..then 2-3 years later apply for a Phd?..how good does that look?? ...there aren't THAT many schools in Canada...if this was the US, sure...you have 20 top flight universities you can afford to upset...here ..not so much

I'm still hoping that they give out offers earlier than late March/early April. Part of me thinks maybe they'll feel slight pressure to release acceptances earlier then what they said in the emails because they know a lot of students have to respond to other schools as soon as possible. Or maybe I'm being too optimistic lol.

I'm curious...what are the implications/consequences of 'rescinding an acceptance'? (other than potentially burning that bridge)...are their legal/financial consequences? I am in a situation where a school has offered me admission and given me till the middle of the month to decide...but I've also applied to Munk and like others on this board been told no decision till the end of March..its a very difficult position to be in.

I am in a similar position and I have been thinking of just accepting my offer because it was my second choice anyway. I have until the 19th to accept and it would be risky to hold off/reject it when there's no guarantee I would get into Munk. I hope they let us know before the end of the month, but if I don't hear anything from Munk by next week I am going to accept my offer to GSPIA. And if I get into Munk whenever they release acceptances I guess rescind GSPIA. I don't think there's any legal or financial consequences

Just basing it off talking to my friends who applied this year; most of them said they would be accepting Munk over NPSIA. So I wouldn't be surprised if they had more people this year, however idk if that would be their reason; they could have still done rolling, or first and second round. Also considering every school I applied to had a round on Feb 27 except Munk, this means that everyone has an offer that expires mid-March. If people are dead set on Munk, imagine how many people will rescind their acceptances to NPSIA, SIDGS, etc.

They also added the video component for the first time this year so it's probably taking a lot longer to review applications.

I was asking Munk last week so I could accept my other offers that have a deadline in Mid-March. Munk told me they would be sending in late-March early-April.

Yeah I emailed them  and they said the same thing. I guess there's a couple more weeks of waiting left. A bit curious of how many people applied this year because they are sending out offers later than usual.
