Hello: what you end up with honestly depends on how much you are willing to pay. For what it's worth, I have colleagues who spend anywhere between $650 (room w/ shared washroom) to to $900 (also a room w/ shared washroom). For a separate washroom, you are looking at a 2 bed, 2 washroom place. These can range anywhere between $1000-$1500 per room- check out Bunz Home Zone and the U of T off campus housing groups on Facebook for most recent estimates. My advice would be to find a place downtown, eliminate commuting costs, and have lots of home cooked meals. Alternatively, make sure that if you are living some distance away from the core, then there are good commuting options with respect to regularity of bus service etc.
TA'ship and RA'ship income is taxed. If your department gives you an award or something (like an entrance scholarship etc.), that will not be taxed.

The Professor who interviewed me is in a pretty different field than my interest. Also I didn't indicate him in my application. As a result, I don't think I did well at all. His research is very cool tho and I really hope he could consider me for his lab.
GPA: 3.75, GRE: V160 Q168 AW5.5
Two 3-month internships at two top robotics companies. One 7-month internship at a robotics cloud computing startup. Two years of undergrad research experience, but no pub. Three very strong letters (two from PIs, one from CEO). Was project lead for a UAV project team for three years. Got $10000 award from IARPA challenge (in biometrics) b4.

No way! That's definitely someone trolling. They haven't made any decisions as you can see from the calendar link I posted. Wait until the end of February at most.

It's a myth whether we should contact POIs. Honestly I have heard of cases where none of the POIs even replied and the guy got into the programs. There are also cases where the POI's reply sounds promising but the guy didnt get in

Me too. Area of interest BIoinformatics, Data Science, Machine Learning. Is it necessary to contact POI? And when can we expect to hear from them?

Hi, I have applied for EECS, second time round, and I applied to geometric data processing, so computational science. I already contacted POIs just waiting it out too
