I think prestige is important but there are certain red flags that I wouldn't allow prestige to let me overlook. I wouldn't pick prestige if the POI doesn't match at all with your interests or if you have tor really stretch your interests to vibe with them because you don't want to be unhappy for 5+ years. Other than that, if you could see yourself being happy at 2 different institutions and loved them both, then i would allow prestige to win out on deciding. In my own personal experience,

I was in a super similar situation! I got accepted into my top choice (yay!), but I still had one interview to go. I had some concerns about the program, and was really tempted to not go to the interview. My friend, whom I met on a different interview, was also scheduled to go to the interview, but decided to back out at the last second. I asked my undergrad mentor what I should do, and he convinced me to go on the interview anyway because at the very least, it's an opportunity to network and meet new people. I'm glad that I went, because it was a nice program and had really nice people, even though I ended up sticking with my top choice. I don't know what the program thinks of my friend, but I didn't want to risk it, especially since my area (forensic/correctional psych) is somewhat of a small world. You should definitely do what's best for you, though!

Is anyone familiar with/have heard things about how much the ranking of psychology programs matter when it comes to continuing in academia/wanting to apply for faculty jobs in universities after graduation?

I emailed my POI from the interview I had last week at UN-Lincoln. She responded and apologized for the delay and cited the polar vortex-- but she said I am IN!! This is my first acceptance and I am over the moon!

I was wondering if professors are generally okay with accepting students who want to take a different take on their research/expertise, like bring their own interests that the professor hasn't explored but still relating it to the professors research? hope that makes sense

I always just think of everyone there as potential friends with clearly similar interests who are going through the same exciting/stressful situation as I am. It's exciting meeting people whose interests and experiences align so closely with mine. It's not a competition, it's a somewhat mutual selection process, so even if the PI picks them over me then I'm happy for them because they must have been a great match for each other.

Unless you know otherwise, your POI could be taking 2 people and they could be your future lab mate. No matter what, they're your future colleague and it's a good opportunity to make a contact at your same level interested in the same sorts of things.

I just received my confirmation for running the Boston Marathon this year (?). Which btw happens to be on April 15th. I grew up in Boston so that Monday has ALWAYS been Patriots Day. But now it's The Fate of My Professional Career Day.
tbh, I just want to fast forward 3 months so I can know my fate  ?

We each interviewed individually! As far as I know group interviews are very uncommon.

I just found this forum. I applied to 9 programs for a mixture of PhD and MA programs in developmental psychology. I've only heard back from one so far. The waiting game is zero fun.

Its definitely a good move. I've even done it after phone interviews. It shows interest and I think it's always a nice touch.

For anyone that applied to Clinical Psych PhD programs at UNC-Chapel Hill, American University, or University of Cincinnati - I emailed their graduate admissions and all these programs are still sending out interview invites. Not all interview slots have been filled. UNC applicants will hear by January 18th, and University of Cincy applicants should hear by the end of Jan. Hope that helps!

From looking back at previous years (from the results page), it seemed at the end of this month (last week) is when people were invited last year
