I will be older than both of you when I finish! But to me, that’s kind of a bonus, because now that I’m a mom, the idea of settling down in some nice college town and doing research that I love sounds good. It didn’t at all when I was younger. I actually met a professor at my last interview who didn’t start her master’s until she was 37 and then didn’t go for her doctorate until later. I found her inspiring.

I don't have any clear-cut answers for you, but I did want to offer some support/thoughts. You're clearly in a tough position, and I can relate to that as I'm figuring out my plan-B as well. I'm also married, to a spouse who wants to attend a PhD program, so I'm totally with you on that one - it's not just your own desires that matter anymore! Balancing goals is complex, and sacrifice is virtually inevitable on both ends.
Speaking from personal experience, I can say that huge student debt is rough, especially if your spouse has some as well. That fear is no joke, and you're right to take it seriously.
If there is anything useful I can offer, it is this: you will (ideally!) be age 40 either way. Which version of yourself do you want to be then?

    an ode to 2019 applicants
    - it's okay to cry, but don't lose hope
    - it's okay to feel hopeless, but never let go of your dreams
    - it's okay to question your dreams, however, don't lose sight of the vision

Sorry for multiple posts but just checked the portal for my top choice and noticed that it has been switched from "Pending" to "Admitted" and I'm freaking out trying not to get too excited until it's email-official.  For all I know somebody checked the wrong box in some system...!

I'm in a similar boat  - I received an offer but I'm not sure if I'll be accepting cause of the low funding package. I still haven't heard back from my top choice either. I'm not sure if I should accept my back up job offer or the 1 PhD program offer. I'm too nervous to get completely rejected next year if I don't go with my only option this year!

I'm in an similar boat. Some Stuff (tm) happened during this interview cycle that put me into the position of REALLY needing a fully funded program. Initially I was going to be happy with partial funding + taking out loans, but that's not the case anymore. All three of my current offers are not funded, and of the fully-funded programs I applied to, three rejected me and two have been radio silence since interview day. Sighh

About to sign the contract for my back up plan job...bitter sweet. Grateful for a good back up plan but it’s definately feeling harder than I expected to let go of the PhD dream for this year. Haven’t heard anything at all from my top two choices which isn’t helping on the closure front. How’s everyone else dealing with the disappointment? Congrats to everyone who has been successful this season!

Jees, rough week for me. I got rejected from UCLA & UM-College Park, both of which were very kind responses to my inquiry email to my POIs.
On the otherhand, the response from my UCI POI was a waitlist! First rounds are out, but I'm not out of the running.

Anyone have any lovely stories about people getting surprise admissions after no interviews?? I've thought through all my options for the year ahead and now have my back up plan lined up and ready to go (trying to make the best of it!) but there's this 1 per cent of me that dreams I might still get in to my program and then that will screw the people involved in my back up plan, so I'm holding back a little and its feeling like super terrible limbo! #streamofneuroticism

    Hey all!
Just thought I'd share my good news. I applied to 6 schools this cycle, received official rejections from 2 schools, and expecting the other 4 to all be rejections as well since I've had no interview requests. I started applying to lab manager/lab coordinator positions and I've already gotten 2 interviews so far! I haven't officially gotten the jobs but I feel so much better after not getting any interview invites prior. I really thought my application wasn't good enough and honestly debated giving up on ever going to grad school, but just getting these interviews have really made me more excited and I'm definitely gonna work on my apps and try again next year!

I just got accepted into a school and I am ecstatic. I know I won't be accepting the offer because the funding isn't right but I got in, y'all......... *does a mini jiggy* *insert twerk emoji*

So. I know Drexel interviews are like, two days from now.
And I know I am probably rejected with 99.999999% certainty (because duh, interviews in 2 days).
But some dumb part of my brain is still thinking, "Wait but what if they just messed up and they really meant to invite you?!?!?!"
    Haha...... ?

I emailed my POI from the interview I had last week at UN-Lincoln. She responded and apologized for the delay and cited the polar vortex-- but she said I am IN!! This is my first acceptance and I am over the moon!

Emailed some schools for a status update since I haven't heard anything back about my application. Hope this might help someone of you waiting as well:
Columbia Teacher's College (Clinical Psychology PhD): Not heard a thing from them despite emailing the contact individual on their website
NYU (Neural Science PhD): "We have reviewed all applications and have sent out interview invitations to our top candidates. We may send out additional interview offers at a later date but it is not guaranteed. Official rejections will be sent out by mid-February."
University of Southern California (Psychology PhD [mine specific application was for Clinical Science]): "All applications have now been reviewed and we have already had our interview day. However, interviews may still be extended up to February 15th. Admission letters will be sent out soon in the next week or so."

I graduated this past December from a top 10 research institution with a 4.0 GPA and said school has been asking me to be valedictorian. During undergraduate, I have been working as a PA for a private neuropsych practice working with kids and have been participating in 4 different research groups (1 second author manuscript in progress with a conference coming up in a month, and 3 other manuscripts in progress with potential conference presentations in which I'm co-investigator/second author for). I have very low self-esteem, so I started applying to Ph.D. programs with no expectations, but post-docs, licensed psychologists, and graduate students have been hyping me up since last year saying that I would get in with the amount of experience I have.
I've been rejected to pretty much all of the schools I applied for expect for my safety, in which I have an interview for. Not only do I feel worthless, but I have to go to work several times a week where people have been constantly asking me about grad school results and being surprised that I haven't gotten in anywhere, as if the rejections haven't been crushing enough. So yea, not sure what to do right now and had to get this off of my chest.

Someone mentioned previously (don't remember if it was on this board or another) that USC has already extended their invites since their interviews are today (February 1st), but they MAY continue to extend interviews into mid-February. I'm in the same boat as you, guess we just have to hold tight ?

I am still hoping to hear back ~something~ from UMB, but at this point... Im presuming rejection.
Just got to train myself to refocus that energy!! But I feel you, dude!
