Bringing the focus back to the point of this thread.... ASK (THE GRADUATE STUDENTS) ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES and the Department's attitude toward mental health concerns
During my last visitation day experience as a host back in 2016, when we discussed the inclusion of mental health services in student insurance/tuition, we could see quite a few faces sighing in relief.  Clearly, it was on their minds but didn't know how to ask.  While the discussion of mental health concerns has been more open, much more work needs to be done. The quality of mental health services to graduate students vary quite widely from institution to institution.  Most of the focus has been on undergraduates but not enough on graduate students (or faculty too) and you'll want to make sure that the institutions that accepted you are well on their way to servin to the graduate student community or have already established support systems.  Also, not all departments have caught up on the reality of depression/anxiety and the ways in which they truly affect students' well-being and progress to the PhD.  You'll want to investigate how supportive the faculty is of students' well-being, particularly your POI and the older faculty whom you may be working with (they're of survivalist mentality-- one didn't talk about loneliness, depression, and anxiety that came with graduate school, you simply survived).

Yeah, I feel ya. I keep telling myself the experience of rejections along with the ambiguity for the future is good for me (which... I know it is in a lot of ways), but still is just sucks. Hang in there!

The anxiety is a small part of the larger transitional period into grad school... Not knowing where we're going to be in six months, not knowing about living situations, etc. Just knowing anything would be nice? Pretty please?

I feel the same way! So many people on the forum have at least most of their responses in, and here I am anxiously awaiting 5 out of 6. ?

Holy heck, man. It's unbelievable. The waiting is bad enough without the added anxiety of seeing others accepted and rejected.

Have you seen the newest thread, 2019 Visit Days/Decisions? People have given lists of questions they asked/think people should generally ask. It is a very useful thread and I suggest reading it if you have not!

Hi, bitter grad student here to implore you to ask about sixth-year funding on your visiting weekends. Don’t accept vague reassurances along the lines of “well, sixth-year students often find their way to getting funding somehow.” Get a clear answer. Talk to advanced grad students and read the student newspaper/union newsletter if you have to. And treat periods of “austerity” at universities with the utmost seriousness.

    Hey guys,
I'm a third-year in a PhD program and I lurk on these forums every year...
Quick advice - as you turn down offers, please remember that if you've done your legwork properly, these are probably big names in your field that you will continue to see and cite for years to come. I turned down an offer three years ago and continue to email that professor regularly. In fact, she reviewed my comps list for me!
All this is to say, please keep in mind that academia is a small small world. If you liked these people enough to apply to work with them, you probably want to be able to come back to them over the years.

Good luck to everyone! You're almost there!

I meant to post this earlier, but I got the notification while on my way to see Hamilton.... I got my second acceptance! I was accepted into the MA to PhD program in American history at SLU. I emailed the program director to see if a switch into the early modern history program was possible and will probably ask my current faculty mentor (who does some very interesting work) about possibly working with me for a masters.
I honestly didn't expect to have to weigh two options, but I'm so glad I have to!

I accepted my Michigan offer today and withdrew my application from NYU. Michigan's offer is too good to turn down in my opinion. With my name off the wait list, hopefully, someone from here will get that acceptance.

I'm thinking that it might be a POI choice whether they interview or not, but I'm certainly bracing for a rejection. Hope is there for all of us though! ❤️

Yes, I can confirm that Duke's visiting days are next week (February 26-28), @Carltonjacobs!
If by UT, you meant UT Austin, perhaps @fordlandia can enlighten you.

Similar to yourself, I thought that reaching out to POIs without a specific reason may be pointless. As such, the only POIs I reached out to were professors who I heard might not be taking graduate students, might be retiring, or transferring to another university. In my experience, this didn't seem to hurt as I secured an interview invitation at my top choice, without frequent communication with my POI.
In short, I don't think that failing to reach out to your POI is a deciding factor in the admissions decisions, so I wouldn't worry about it! ?

UT Austin invited a number of applicants to attend a graduate students' weekend at the end of the month. It seems unlikely that final decisions will come out before then.
