2018 Blooper Real*
purrfectpals replied to M(allthevowels)H's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Forgot to mention my POI in my personal statement for Berkeley. She's actually the one I want to work with the most, so I'm beating myself up over the implied rejection -

Hi, fellow international applicant! I also applied to Rutgers and unfortunately haven't heard anything from them either. ? It's so, so nervewrecking. I really hope they would get back to us soon. -

Yeah, that's the case for me too. There's so many things I have to do, but I can only do them after I hear back from all the schools I've applied to. But oh gosh, what a cutie!! Please tell her ai love her. -

Not going to lie, one of the benefits of being an international applicant for me is never having to go through that, because as expensive as it is to travel to United States, I would die if every phone call could potentially be from a university I applied to. ? -

Another Victoranist here! Focus is also on race and empire and queer theory. -

I actually did my MA at Penn, and my adviser there told me that the admissions committee wouldn't be making any final decisions until two weeks into February, so you might be hearing from them soon! Best of luck to both of you! -

My MA advisor who is on the adcom said the same thing. He specifically stated that, as much as the people there may like to work with me, they would automatically not consider any application from their MA students to avoid the program becoming too insular. This is specific to the program, however, so it definitely depends. -

Some gifts from my home country! Which I already gave when I left the States, so I just sent some emails stating my appreciation for everything they did again. -
Getting Out of Academia
purrfectpals replied to havemybloodchild's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Not too sure! Ideally, I'd be in a position to get an academic job in the States or back home when I graduate, but if worse comes to worst, I can resume work as a translator again. -

UT Austin Acceptances
purrfectpals replied to spatial_person's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Oh man, I'm in the same boat! It's also about 20 hours flight for me, so I'm planning to shoot an email to ask for more details this weekend. @dreid And echoing everone else. I had to email the coordinator during the application process due to some issues regarding my recommendations, and she was quite nice and accomodating in her replies, even when I emailed her when it was 4-5 am over there (timezones). So no need to worry. -
UT Austin Acceptances
purrfectpals replied to spatial_person's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Hi everyone! My focus is on 19th Century British Literature, Queer Theory, and Race and Empire! UT is also one of my top choices, so I'm really excited by the opportunity. Though like others, I have to see how my other applications go first before I make my final decision, since funding is also a concern for me as well. I'm hoping I'll be able to make the campus visit, but since I live in Asia, I don't know how much they can help with the cost (a single flight is about 1000 dollars... ), so I'll have to contact them first and see how it goes. -

It was part of the acceptance letter, so I'll contact the Grad Student Services for more details, then. But thank you. I'm really excited! I just hope I can make this trip since I haven't spent much time abroad and would like to familiarize myself with the area first. -

Campus Visits
purrfectpals replied to allplaideverything's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Hello! I was invited to visit UT Austin as a prospective student, and as someone who's currently living in Asia, I'm not sure how it'll work. Does anyone have any experience with campus visits as an international student? Thanks in advance! -

A long time lurker here! I just got my MA and moved back home earlier this year, but most of the teaching positions in my country require a PhD to advance, so I thought I might as well get one ASAP. This is my second time going through the waiting game, and it's still as nerve-wrecking as the last. What worries me the most, though, is probably the fact that most of the programs I applied to are in the States, and that means I'll have to live there for at least 5-6 years. I did my MA in America, so it won't be my first time living abroad, but 5-6 years sound really daunting and I'm surprisingly concerned about the cats that I'm leaving behind with my family more than anything. -
How are you preparing for next year?
purrfectpals replied to WhatLikeItsHard's topic in Waiting it Out
Playing with my cats! I'll have to leave them behind if I do get accepted anywhere so I want to spend as much time with them as possible.
