Anyone else just waiting around for schools to get back to them so they can get on with making a decision? So looking forward to being out of this limbo and planning the future. At least I had a snow day from work today and could take Ursula on a nice hike:

Yeah, that's the case for me too. There's so many things I have to do, but I can only do them after I hear back from all the schools I've applied to.

But oh gosh, what a cutie!! Please tell her ai love her.

I can't stand the health insurance calls...Calling from all the states in which I applied to programs!

Not going to lie, one of the benefits of being an international applicant for me is never having to go through that, because as expensive as it is to travel to United States, I would die if every phone call could potentially be from a university I applied to. ?

Anyone here a Victorian/19th C British specialist? It seems that this year's acceptances have so far consistently been for other areas of specialization other than Victorian/19th C British. I'm wondering if last year was a big year for this particular area, and there just isn't much space for specialists working in this period this application season as a result. Granted, people might not be reporting their areas on the results page, but I'm curious to know if anyone else has noticed that.

Another Victoranist here! Focus is also on race and empire and queer theory.

Historically Berkeley notifiers rejections in March so personally I’m planning for that

but UPenn- who knows??!! I’m rooting for you!

I actually did my MA at Penn, and my adviser there told me that the admissions committee wouldn't be making any final decisions until two weeks into February, so you might be hearing from them soon!

Best of luck to both of you!

some institutes have unwritten rules to make a very large attempt to take students who didn't spend undergrad time there. this is an across-field thing i think (i've heard of it happening in more than one field). so it might actually be because you studied abroad there that may have not counted in your favor. a friend of mine was almost rejected from her dream program because she'd spent time working with her POI, when you'd think that instead that'd make her a stronger candidate because she's already proven that she's capable of grad-level work, that they collaborate together well, that the fit is perfect. however, it doesn't look great to "take your own" and it also keeps thinking/scholarship a little insular. on the other hand, some programs love taking undergrads from the same school because they know exactly what they're getting :)

tl;dr fit is about so many things and often we don't even know half of it. we take shots in the dark at what programs will be the best fit, and sometimes we hit the target and sometimes we don't. all we can do is try to present ourselves as strong candidates and, if we don't hit the target, we just have to try again. persistence is necessary in this field.

My MA advisor who is on the adcom said the same thing. He specifically stated that, as much as the people there may like to work with me, they would automatically not consider any application from their MA students to avoid the program becoming too insular. This is specific to the program, however, so it definitely depends.

Another UT acceptee here! I hope to make it to the visit, but the flight will run at about 1500$ and will take over 20 hours, so I'm not sure yet if it'll be feasible.

My focus in 20th/21st c women's writing, aesthetics, formations of time, feminist and queer theory, with a pinch of critical race and disability studies.

@dreid I also think contacting them couldn't hurt, especially since it's already been a few days since the acceptances came out.

Oh man, I'm in the same boat! It's also about 20 hours flight for me, so I'm planning to shoot an email to ask for more details this weekend.

@dreid And echoing everone else. I had to email the coordinator during the application process due to some issues regarding my recommendations, and she was quite nice and accomodating in her replies, even when I emailed her when it was 4-5 am over there (timezones). So no need to worry.

  7. Hi everyone!

My focus is on 19th Century British Literature, Queer Theory, and Race and Empire! UT is also one of my top choices, so I'm really excited by the opportunity. Though like others, I have to see how my other applications go first before I make my final decision, since funding is also a concern for me as well.

I'm hoping I'll be able to make the campus visit, but since I live in Asia, I don't know how much they can help with the cost (a single flight is about 1000 dollars... ), so I'll have to contact them first and see how it goes.

@purrfectpals Was it just a mass email invitation, or an email from a professor? If from a professor, go ahead and email and ask if there might be a travel stipend available, in which case they would reimburse you for the flight. Or, you could email their Grad Student Services Adviser and ask the same question, or ask what alternatives they offer for international students. Good luck, and congratulations on your acceptance (assuming you were invited as an accepted student)

It was part of the acceptance letter, so I'll contact the Grad Student Services for more details, then. But thank you. I'm really excited! I just hope I can make this trip since I haven't spent much time abroad and would like to familiarize myself with the area first.

  9. A long time lurker here! I just got my MA and moved back home earlier this year, but most of the teaching positions in my country require a PhD to advance, so I thought I might as well get one ASAP.

This is my second time going through the waiting game, and it's still as nerve-wrecking as the last. What worries me the most, though, is probably the fact that most of the programs I applied to are in the States, and that means I'll have to live there for at least 5-6 years.  I did my MA in America, so it won't be my first time living abroad, but 5-6 years sound really daunting and I'm surprisingly concerned about the cats that I'm leaving behind with my family more than anything.
