How did you word your email? I wrote one to the DGS at another school and didn't get a reply (at least not immediately)

At Harvard, DGS does not reply, as well. The last time e-mailed them to get more info about the program, I wrote to DGS, but the administrative assistant got back to my e-mail.

What are people's takes on thank you gifts for LOR writers? I have heard mixed messages on whether they are expected/appropriate. I will see one of my recommenders next week when I visit a school, and would like to get something for them, but not sure what to get or whether I should just not get them something.

As an international student, I am planning to bring things from my home country via my family so I can give it to my recommenders who supported me in the whole process. Without them, I could not get into anywhere.

  3. I will be attending a school which may be around 50-60, and the pure reason is the fit. I don't think I can find a better fit than this in any of the schools in the US. Also, this school certainly places people to tenure-track positions and have an academic focus. So, there is nothing like if you don't go to T-5 school, you will be unemployed. If it was like that, only 50 people might have been doing Ph.D.s as T-5 programs accept that much in total.

I have a paper due tomorrow... but they did me so dirty. To me its the equivalent of a breakup, but then still being required to finish out a lease with the same person who doesn't want you. I'm going to be so petulant in class tomorrow... ugh. I wish I was a better person.

Let me tell you a sadder thing, I don’t even get shortlisted for the sociology program. The official rejects did not come yet but I was told that if I was not interviewed, I had been rejected. The thing is I had great relationship with the professors (including DGS) and I am currently working on a prestigious project with these professors. They always said that how they want me to stay and continue to be on the project. At the end, I did not even get shortlisted.

This spoke to me. I majored in journalism and sociology in undergrad. All of ug I spent prepping to be a journalist. During my last semester I realized I loved sociology and academia more. It's great when you can figure out what you are really passionate about, but not always an easy process. I wish you the best!

I'm really glad to hear that you're happy with where you're headed! I actually have a background in political science as well, so our interests might be pretty similar (in terms of being interested in the role culture plays in politics) but I personally found that political science programs don't allow for as much focus on culture as I'd like. Sociology is great about allowing interdisciplinary work though, so maybe I'll see you at conferences one day! Best of luck!

Thank you for your good wishes! :)

Will you be going to Boston University then? Maybe you can apply to transfer to Brown in a couple years (after the Masters perhaps?) if your heart's still set on going there!

My heart is at Boston University, and with political science. This application cycle taught me that I love political science more than sociology (no offense). I am still interested in the cultural effects of politics and identities, but I feel like I am a better candidate for political science.

I'm sure you've answered this elsewhere, but where do you think you'll be going in September? I'm glad you've been accepted somewhere that is the right place for you!!

I will go to BU. I love their program a lot, and it is the best fit possible. I love the department and professors and feel very connected even though I did not meet most of the professors. They have very good placement rate and also really close to my current home.

Still waiting for official responses from UC Davis, BC, Chicago, Brown and Notre Dame.. I know it’s probably all rejections but it beats radio silence. Looking forward to the closure so I can get on with life.

Congrats to all who have gotten admits and are deciding between programs!

I think you are waitlisted by Brown because acceptance and rejections went to people

Best of luck to you! By the way, BC is still dead silent on me...

I got my rejection from BC; I think a week ago. I am not very sad as I learned that they accept a very small cohort (4-5 students) and most of them are theorists or CP people. I am an IR person and BC was not a great fit for me. I got over it.
