ihatedis got a reaction from eloisetheapplicant in Fall 2021 Clinical & Counseling PhD/PsyD
From TC:
”Admissions is not involved in this program's interview process, as faculty reach out to applicants directly. Final decisions will be released in mid March, and faculty may reach out to schedule an interview anytime before final decisions are made. Interviews are usually conducted in mid February, but truly anything can happen until decisions are released. For this reason, please be sure to check your email regularly”

ihatedis reacted to topsailpsych in How to request email over skype rather than in-person
I would start the email with something about how excited and honored you are to receive the invitation to interview and how you really look forward to speaking with the faculty and students. Then continue on with how you're trying to figure out travel plans, but with the costs, you're not sure quite yet if you'll be able to make it. If there is a deadline by which you need to respond, I would let them know you will be able to let them know for sure in the coming days, and definitely before their deadline. Then see what they say, they may mention if they have travel funds (or if they will book your flight and hotel for you at their expense - this is rare in our field, but I have heard of some schools doing this for applicants), or they may suggest a Skype interview. Either way, it communicates to them that you are very interested and puts the ball in their court to provide information about assistance or alternatives available to you.
I will caution you, while schools say that doing a Skype interview doesn't hurt your chances of acceptance, I have had many professors at different schools tell me over the years that the reality is that it does hurt your chances a bit because fewer faculty get to meet you and therefore you have fewer advocates when it comes time to make decisions. So if you possibly can attend in person, I would try to do so, at least for your top schools.

It is, lol. I posted on that thread saying the exact same thing. The fact that I was reminded of that thread is super ironic because it proves that no one reads that shit.

Scared the shit out of me. Thought this was the clinical psych thread for a second.

Most schools have at least 2 dates. If school B extends an invite, then you can see what their options are for alternate dates. I agree with @ihatedis, prioritize the school you know you have an interview for.

It would be great to reached out to the other school to check your application- maybe even call to see if you can get an answer ASAP. However, I would absolutely prioritize the interview school.

ihatedis reacted to rainydaychai in Question for people getting interviews!
Again, I wanted to second what @round2_ said above. I currently have 3/8 interviews (and honestly, have no idea how I got them - you all are so qualified ?) and I have a sneaking suspicion that my connections secured 2/3 of them. One of them is with my undergraduate institution where the professors all know me, and for the other, a professor I worked with closely throughout my undergrad personally called my POI there and sung my praises. I have been incredibly fortunate to work with amazing people!
Otherwise, my CV is a little weird in that I have been first author of 6/7 of my conference posters/presentations. It's taken a lot of blood, sweat, and tears on my end, but it may have paid off now. I also had multiple graduate students and trusted faculty review my statement of purpose before I submitted it and make lots of edits, so I'm sure that helped. Since my undergraduate Honours program is awesome, they also let us be teaching assistants during undergrad, so I have a year of teaching experience too. Other than that, I'm at a loss... you sound super qualified! Best of luck, I hope you get some invites coming your way soon!

Awe, you are so kind! This forum is really unique in that regard, we all are trying to lift each other up. This is something I've struggled with, and these words are much needed with interviews right around the corner! I want to pass this along to everyone else as well. There may be reasons why you don't think you're worthy of your accomplishments (e.g., I likely feel this way because I am a younger applicant), but it's important to own them nonetheless! You all deserve these opportunities!

I just have to contradict your negativity here. It's not "weird" or a fluke that you have 6 1st author conference posters/presentations and a year of TAing. It's awesome and shows how capable you are. Don't diminish your accomplishments. And if tons of people sung your praises and reviewed your materials, it's because they believe you belong in a graduate program.

I had two interviews today with one of my top choices for clinical psych grad programs, and I want to share what has really already been suggested here, but I want to reiterate because I don't think this link has been posted.... before interviews, you guys might want to check out this site! I pleasantly surprised my POI today in my interview for having knowledge of my preferred POI's current NIH grants as they werent listed on their website so Im assuming they guessed I really did do my research--I did, but to be very honest this website really helped! It really opens up a new game changer of potential questions you can ask your POI('s).

If it gives anyone some relief/hope, Rutgers (PhD) said they will send out invites by the end of the month. So no need to fret just yet.

I'm sorry to hear this was the case for you.
It's a combination of stats (your scores), your research experience, your statement of purpose (Was it clear?), your networking skills, and your recommendations (Were they strong?). One of these had to be lacking. I'm more than happy to chat with you through a PM about my experience. Don't give up.

Haven't heard specifically about Stony Brook (clinical, not cognitive, sorry), but I don't think they've sent out all their invites yet. I was late sending a part of my app in, and they reassured me not to stress.
