So I've officially entered Phase II in this process (Waiting to hear regarding Acceptances/Waitlists/Rejections post-interview). According to most of the schools I applied to, within 1-1 1/2 weeks MAX from interviews is the appropriate time frame to hear from schools, at least with acceptances.

Those are pretty strong words! I'm sure most POIs would be aware of their words before sending out emails. I guess only time will tell but I would be curious if anyone receives a decision that didn't match with an obvious email/communication remark, such as "see you in the fall".

Ugh same with me. I was hoping to get a little more than that. At least that was my experience with emailing admissions directly. I got a better response when reaching out to a specific person for one of the programs.

TheEternalGrad reacted to iamsotired in First Cycle Results: What to do next? Please help.
I'm 100% certain my abysmally low Quant GRE score became the Achilles' heel in my applications this first cycle for Clinical. I admit, I am not a great self-learner and therefore working with Magoosh, where the Quant questions are unstructured and not very helpful in terms of representative difficulty, threw me off.  I applied to 6 schools, and one of the POIs e-mailed me to say he fought the department to keep me due to my high GPA, strong research track, and publication record, but the department wouldn't let it go. He encouraged me to re-take the GRE and apply under him next time. Initially rejection hurt a lot, but I talked to the graduate students in my research lab and they all mentioned that they didn't get in their first cycle and re-took the GRE, got clinical experience, or just worked. However, the only interview I got was for a school that did not require the GRE and I had a very strong feeling about this place initially.

I did apply to a Msc. in Public Health because I've noticed that this is a very common Masters among many individuals who took a gap year before applying again to Med. school and Clinical Psychology.  My parents literally asked me, "why would you apply for the most worthless degree possible?" when I initially told them that I wanted to pursue Clinical psychology. They've been horrible towards me ever since in my 2nd year of undergrad I told them that I wasn't doing Med school. I feel lost and confused, and being a first generation college student has been part of the reason why. My entire life has revolved around following a schedule, and I graduate in May and I no longer will have that schedule. It's scaring me a lot. Being a student and researcher has always brought me joy because I can see my hard work paying off.

If I don't get in, I plan on doing the following:
-Re-take the GRE, as I found a tutor specifically for the math. I plan on dedicating enough time this round.
-Working with a research lab at another University (I've been working with a Ph.D student for their dissertation there as I was recruited as a methodology consultant).
    -Continue to work on research.
    -Teach myself R.

Additionally, I was wondering if doing a post-bacc will be useful? I know they're usually made for individuals who have no psychology background, or a low GPA, but are there any complete research based ones? I think Berkley has one?

Also, I want to thank you all for being emotionally honest about your experiences during the application process. It makes me feel as if I'm not alone.

I'm in a similar situation. This is my third time applying. The first time I know I just didn't have enough research experience, second time was just a half assed attempt applying to just three places, and this is my first real go at it, but round 3. I have a good GPA, several research publications and posters, etc. and interviewed with my top 3 choices this year. I'm waitlisted at my top 2 and super stressed. At this point I don't know what I should do before applying again if I don't get off the waitlist. I'm just hoping for the best...

No one here knows what it’s like to be a psychologist. We’re all trying to get into grad school so that we can get a degree in psychology and become one.

Like Psyhopeful mentioned, people on this forum are graduate school applicants, so we’re still on our way trying to become psychologists. You can check out this website below instead, where there’re some psychology professionals on there (although most are clinical/counseling psychologists.
    https://forums.studentdoctor.net/forums/psychology-psy-d-ph-d.57/
However, the truth is also that you will get biased responses from any online forum. You might want to consider other survery methods such as emailing/calling psychologists.

In addition, I know you didn’t ask this, but I took a look at your survey and actually have some suggestions for your questions if you were to really ask these to psychologists:
       1. “How many years did it take you to become a psychologist?” - There is no way for anyone to become a psychologist in less than 4 years, so you might want to change your answer choices. (Reason see below).
       2. “What degree do you have?” - Psychologists are those who have their doctorate degrees in psychology. Perhaps you could ask “How many different types of degrees do you have?” If you really want to ask this question.
       3. “What type of psychologist are you” - In your answer choices, social workers and licensed mental health counselors are not psychologists but mental health practitioners, and psychiatrists are medical doctors not psychologists. I suggest you editing this question or modifying the answer choices.
       4. “Is psychology what you expected?” - You might want to explain what you mean by this.
       5. Another question for you to consider adding is the type of job settings and positions they work at because it’d be really different.

Hope this was helpful. Good luck!

This is such great advice. I got rejected from all but one school the first time I applied. I knew that school wasn’t the right choice for me, but I went anyway because I was so sad and dejected. I made it for a year before withdrawing and deciding I was NOT going to be a psychologist. I became a bartender, a buyer for a clothing store, and then became a social worker (which I loved tbh). Anyway, TEN years later, I’m reapplying. I haven’t gotten in anywhere at this point, but my outlook is so different. It is such a crazy, competitive, unfair, sometimes nonsense, heartbreaking process. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll be sad if I don’t get in (SO SAD), but I have learned more about myself and what I want personally and professionally over the last ten years than I would have if I had just gotten in. I’ve moved a ton, made a family, made mistakes, learned, helped people, helped myself, and came back to psychology because I love it & I’m going to keep on trying even if it doesn’t work out for me this time. Your worth isn’t defined by this, even though it may feel that way. You are more than this and you may be so surprised by all you can accomplish by taking some more time before going to a program. You have your WHOLE LIFE to be a psychologist. It will always be there whether it begins this year, next, or in ten (hi!), or twenty, or whatever!! Rejection hurts. But as someone who was so hurt that I literally needed a break from the field, I can tell you that it heals, and I truly feel like in my case, it was for the best (corny AF but true!). Give yourself a hug, put on a great movie (Crazy Rich Asians is a great feel good movie), pour yourself some wine, and remind yourself that you are a rockstar no matter what.

For anyone reading this: Please do seek out professional help if you feel your emotions and/or stress is becoming overwhelming. You do not have to suffer with these thoughts alone.
Being rejected from programs, especially in your first application rounds, is very normal. I recommend for you to look around at the feedback some of us have given to applicants across these threads who are taking rejections very personally.
Feel free to PM me if you want to debrief a little bit more? I have given so much personal feedback to fellow applicants on here who were rejected across the board.
I went through this process three times, and really learned about myself and how to change my relationship with rejections.

so, I got denied from 11 out of 13 programs. I am waiting on one PhD and one masters program. my depression has definitely set in and I just feel so lost. i've slept so much ever since finding out.
i just feel really hopeless and have no idea what to do because my initial plan was migrate with my family as we moved down south, but we might not be doing that. i'm worries that even applying for a last minute masters program might break me because if i don't get in, then it may be the last straw. i don't feel stressed, i feel helpless and hopeless
