@Camillalxy Sorry, I was editing my post as you submitted yours. Got a response a lot faster than I thought I would!
My first rejection, but already having an acceptance at this point has dulled the pain somewhat.

First rejection by Stanford geological sciences! See I was right about March is the rejection month at least for me  I'm chill still but with 5 more programs to go, I just wanna know.
Okay another rejection from Caltech geobiology an hour later! Things're really going the way I want them to?

Welp, got rejected by Stanford today.  So thats 2/3 rejections for me.  Honestly though I had kind of made my peace with the fact that I might not get in anywhere.  If my last one is an admit itll be a surprise for sure, but Im weirdly ok with across the board rejections.  Somewhere along the line this year I stopped tying my self worth with academic success and thats made a huge difference on my outlook.  Not knowing what Im going to do after my masters feels oddly liberating.

I also haven't heard from Caltech at all, nor have I heard of anyone who has. Same with Columbia EESC.
I just spoke with a professor from MIT EAPS who says that the department is pretty far behind its typical admissions schedule. He sounded positive about my application status (I couldn't quite make out what he said when he talked about that part lol), and said that he/the department would likely get back to me next week. This was an Atmos/Oceans/Climate person; not sure if he was referring to that or all of EAPS.

I was referring to the Geophysical department.  I forget they have 3 to 4 earth science departments, sorry.

Hopefully I get these tags correct... Here is an update from what I know!
I am sorry to tell you @5beats3summers but I received an official letter of acceptance for Stony Brook in late January with funding details and their visit day is March 7-10. The deadline to respond yes or no to the visit day was March 11th.  Acceptance came from Geoscience Dept and I expressed interest in working with Dr. Hurowitz / planetary science / Mars stuff. If you want more details feel free to direct message me.
@Kamen @cratergator @Camillalxy @jimmay @BrockHarrison I still think there is a little hope for Stanford. On Jan 22nd, a PI sent me an unofficial acceptance email and scheduled a visit for next week (Feb 27 - March 1), but he said in the email "Because of the way our admissions work in our department, it is too early to give you an official definitive answer, but given the strength of your application and my latest interactions with the admission committee, I am confident in what the admission outcome will be." Since scheduling the visit, I have not received any official offer. This is for the geological sciences program with a new assistant professor who studies geomorphology/planetary science/Mars.
@geononymous @jimmay @BrockHarrison I received a phone call acceptance from a PI at Rice on January 15th and an official letter in the mail a few days later. I visited the department Feb 5th. I live down the street from Rice currently and I think I was one of the first visitors, but they seemed to have most of the visitors scheduled already for early/mid Feb. During the visit I met for breakfast with the PI, then had 30 min meetings with 8ish professors, lunch with grad students, attended seminar in the afternoon, and went to dinner with PI. Again this was the Earth Science department. PI is Dr. Siebach, subject is planetary science / Mars geochemistry /surface processes.
If anyone happens to be applying to Brown's planetary science group, I received an unofficial acceptance from PI well before their actual deadline (Jan 5th). He told me that letters come late relative to other schools (late Feb) and offered a visit. I visited in October for a few days so we decided another visit wasn't necessary. I have not received any official acceptance from Brown yet. However I did see they sent rejections this week, so I am guessing that I will get a letter quite soon.
Aaand lastly, I still have not heard a single peep from Caltech lol. Probably not getting in. The PIs I wanted to work did not seem to be taking a whole lot of students, if any.

Well, I'm not so sure. I know of some grad students at my undergrad department (comparative to Stanford) who were accepted without visits, but I don't know about Stanford specifically.

Update on this: I'm messaging you now, but decided it might actually be useful for other people to know re Cornell. My visit was suggested a couple weeks ago by my POI, but I was given a choice of dates so it seems very individualized. (A bit upsetting too: I like to meet my future cohort.) I know next to nothing about how many rounds of admits they do, etc. Identifying details like POI name I'll keep for the PM.

I've done both, it usually seems to have no impact on the decision so sadly I'd say to just (Netflix and) chill. Like my Stanford app still says incomplete lol, I asked and they copy pasted the FAQ at me even though it only says they take all of January to sort out documents (I emailed second week of February). Never saw such snark before.
No idea what they meant regarding Stanford, that's what I was commenting on too (hadn't seen anything about geological sciences). I don't know much but i'll message you later today about Cornell. Thanks for the congrats

Hey I can totally relate! When I applied to undergrad I was rejected from my dream school while my two best friends were accepted and eventually went there (cuz they were also rejected by their dream schools). The worse thing was that we three always studied together between classes so I couldn’t help but hearing them discussing plans after accepting the offer. I knew they didn’t do this to hurt my feeling, but I started practicing piano during that time partly because I wanted to avoid their conversation ?. Now three years have passed and I still hope I could get in there with them, but our friendship didn’t die because of the distance or the fact they might be better than me for that college. More importantly, I have had a great life in my current institution and I’m glad they do in theirs! So it’s okay you feel weird at this moment, but don’t let some strangers’ decision ruin your friendship which might be way more important than you think!

I just heard back from the first person I listed on my MIT EAPS SoP, asking to chat - I had not made prior contact. So the process is still ongoing!

2 acceptances to their geobiology option appeared on GradCafe ages ago in January so I'm probably getting rejections tbh ? But geology folks you have my best wishes!

This February is going to be a trip for sure. It will be the one year deathiversary of my dog , which also happens to be my birthday. Additionally, Valentine’s Day, which is one of my least favorite holidays. I just really hate the color pink and being single doesn’t help either, but all those who enjoy it, I hope you do! And then on top of that, I’ll probably will be receiving some rejections. I shouldn’t complain since I have an acceptance, but it will still sting. Good luck to you all and don’t forget self-care when you need it!

Hi @rocksandstuff ! Unfortunately I'm totally out of the loop, so I really don't know anything more than what I've learned by scouring the internet. It seems that some people have heard back this cycle, though I've only verified that one of these people is real (a geophysics admit last Tuesday). You're not the first to ask me about the PS option, and it seems as though there are people waiting to hear back everywhere I look, so I hope that means they're not done yet haha. One of my recommenders is from the department, but I'm a little scared to ask him what's going on... Anyway, best of luck! Hopefully the few of us waiting on them will get good news this week.

Camillalxy got a reaction from Very Hungry Caterpillar in What were you doing when you received your acceptance?
This was two weeks ago. Order in which it happened:
    1. I was having a bad headache the night before because I was afraid I wouldn't be accepted anywhere.
    2. During my shower the next night, I talked to myself like "I can't lose XYZ program" and hoped that I could get an acceptance email as soon as I walked out of the bathroom.
    3. I settled down in front of my laptop and was ready to do homework. The next second an email from POI from XYZ program titled "Congratulations" popped up.
The acceptance into my current undergrad institution was way more dramatic tho so I'll post about it here:
I was waitlisted by Georgia Tech and I went on a trip in May. One night I walked along a river and bought a flower paper lantern with a candle in the middle and I made a wish while I floated it on river. I thanked destiny for everything it had brought to my life and I wished I could enjoy every moment it would present to me. Next morning I woke up and found the acceptance email. I became a fatalist since then and for every wish I've made I'd say the same thing as at that night by the river.
P.S. reviewing my acceptance helps with my anxiety waiting for other decisions a lot!

I think it is funny how many hours I've spent obsessively opening my browser and checking my mail and logging on to websites, with no results, of course, but the moment I am tired in the supermarket, buying paper towels and milk, my phone throws an acceptance at me to an absolutely incredible, totally unreachable, program, whose rejection I had already come to terms with in my mind. My partner found me sobbing in the bread aisle, thinking something awful had happened. Tonight's menu was quickly changed to wine, wine, and wine.

Camillalxy got a reaction from StHoly in Post here to get your worries off your chest
Just killing time (and a bit anxiety) by posting this but it should be fun when I look back in April.
Worries: No pubs, no summer internship, no scholarships/fellowships that count, didn't put too much effort into SOPs. Applied to 7 programs that rank (much) higher than the one I'm in as an undergrad and asked for funding. In short, I might have overrated my profile.
Excitements: Emailed POIs and they all replied; had informal interviews with 4/7 of them last year. I try not to think about the situation when I get all rejected but if I end up like that, I'll have way more options in life than deciding which offer to accept. I can look for research positions; maybe become a outdoor trip leader in travel agencies; or get photography training and work for National Geographic or Lonely Planet. I'm a fatalist (the reason has something to do with my undergrad admission actually), so whatever that's meant to happen, let it happen. Still, I don't like to be rejected, but getting a PhD then becoming a scientist is just one of ways to enjoy my life.
