no one said that UNT acceptance wasn't an honor. what was said was that curators are more likely to be interested in the work of a student who went to a big name school vs. UNT. It only takes like 5 minutes of googling to confirm that. Not everyone wants a big gallery career ( I don't) but if you do...don't go to UNT. My own professor's have told me things like that. Yeah, they wouldn't want their name attached to that statement but any profs lurking on here (which I sincerely doubt bc they have their own lives) would understand this. Some people seem so defensive but sorry the art world sucks. It is responsible to be real about that.  Just look at the changethemuseum or the cancelartgalleries instagrams. So often these pie in the sky attitudes about visual art MFA come from people with access to immense wealth. and this is just my personal opinion bc that is what is being share on this forum: opinions.

I didn’t see every single comment to assume everything was okay but I guess that was wrong on my part. We’re all mature enough to see if we did wrong/right. I was trying to create peace within this forum as were all just trying to help one another and put some advice out there but yes demeaning (if occurred) is in NO way okay or acceptable. I don’t think we were defending at all but more so creating peace.
From the websites I’ve seen on here, gosh, every single one is so freaking talented. But in no way is it okay to demean a program if an individual has been accepted or is planning on pursuing a specific program. So  let’s all just try to remain professional and help one another as much as we can because as I said we all want to be somewhere we’ve always wanted to be and I’m glad I came on this forum because I met some amazing artists and have learned some pretty exceptional things through the advice everyone has given. ??

Also, congrats on your acceptance into Yale! What department were you accepted for? Also, have been slowly seeing the individuals who have been waiting to hear back from their schools. Congratulations to everyone who heard back and as I’ve said if you didn’t get the response you were hoping for continue to kick ass and just do you because success always comes from you doing what you love!

@SocialKonstructVous dites que vous parlez français. Lisez mon nom d'utilisateur. J'espère ardemment que vous ne commencerez pas le forum l'année prochaine. Pauvres petits agneaux!
He does not need defending. Please don’t act like we haven’t seen the demeaning, aggressive messages he posts every day non-stop before he edits them beyond recognition. People have been mostly ignoring it to see if the bullying will stop.
One clear example, putting down UNT and then editing ad nauseum to cover up his words. Have you any idea what an honor it is to be selected to interview at any funded program? I would have been proud of having a University of North Texas MFA degree. They have a wonderful program, their tuition rate is unbeatable, and the faculty is super caring. The place is beautiful and very safe. And funding is available. Same for places like Montana State, Boise State, Michigan State, IUPUI (awesome facilities and faculty!), and so many others!
It is highly unprofessional to denigrate any program, professors, practicing artists, or applicant portfolios, using your name and website in a public forum with people who will be your future colleagues, residency directors, curators, etc. Try googling his name and see the mess that pops up from this forum. Do you know how many professors lurk on this website and see our websites, our names, and our words?
I was accepted at Yale, by the way. Good news for those of you on the waitlist.

Thank you! There are those of us artists who are truly driven to make art, and are not motivated by the promise of a blue-chip gallery or a 'name-brand' school...is it inconceivable to some that we may actually have different needs, motivations and aspirations? Sorry, but if I was interested in hustling I'd do a business degree or I'd become a curator or gallerist. I am a painter, I want to expand my craft and delve into critical theory and immerse myself in creative dialogue with my peers. There are many institutions that cultivate this environment, not just Yale and the top 10. The patriarchal, elitist mind-set is SO incredibly retrograde, and perpetuates everything that is wrong with the abhorrent neolibral late-capitalist aspects of the art-world that undermines the rights of the artist and detracts from the actual art! For a so-called 'marxist' someone seems very uninformed about the super-structure that they are condoning-- especially in the company of fellow artists.
Right now, blue-chip galleries are out of favor with artists anyway, the minute you sell out, your credibility is shot...there are plenty of cutting edge mid-level galleries who look at the work, not the CV of the artist...think Bill Powers of the Half Gallery or Kathy Grayson of The Hole.
I think I'll maintain my authenticity as an artist and keep the focus on the art-making, not on making money, thank you very much. If you're making art for fame, money or status then it will always, always be visible in the lack of authenticity in your work. Stay true to yourself peeps! Enough of the negative, opinionated BS.

I would also just like to chime in-- I worked for a non profit artist residency and was on the jury and when we reviewed applicants WE LOOKED AT THEIR WORK FIRST. Their education hardly ever came into play- sure we had artists that went to UCLA, Yale and wherever but we also had phenomenal artists from "lower tier" universities and they were in no way hindered by their education. It boils my blood to see someone speak for the artworld, to look at profiles and deem them worthy of acceptance, or to use this platform as a personal blog to advance their own credibility and career. Be humble, be aware, be open to the idea that the art world is not black and white. For those of you feeling like your education will dictate the rest of your art career- know that there are so many institutions and people out there that will look at your work first.

Hallelujah. Also, cannot believe the audacity and rudeness of someone speculating unasked as to why a specific person did not get into a specific program as if he has omnipotent insight into the minds of the prestigious faculty and overarching art world at large. And then to mansplain to a feminist artist why her brand of feminist art is unfashionable? I wouldn't want someone like this in a cohort with me. Please take several seats indeed.

Can we just let everyone on this forum shoot their shot despite what school they are going to. Everyone here has a different story with a different background and different schools fit different people for a million reasons. We get it that you are a curator at a gallery that you run who only looks at where people go to school-- but you are not indicative of the entire art world and we are all just trying to get where we are going. Just please, let everyone have a chance at finding what ever level of success they are happy with no matter what MFA program they do or do not end up in. Not everyone here is trying to become a billionaire business person disguised as an artist. Can we just calm the ego talk down a few notches and let it all go.

You weren’t passing information (well, not completely) along you were labeling individuals based on their background— stating an individual was less capable or shouldn’t be considered only because they didn’t have their undergrad in art.

You were helpful in some areas but please don’t belittle individuals.

I attended the virtual open house for Yale painting/printmaking and there were around 900 prospective applicants just for that area! From the way they talked, I think it’s highly unlikely that Yale would ever communicate in an email that they had a lower number of applicants. I applied for painting/printmaking just to see what happens, and I did not receive any email like that from them. That said, I did apply a couple of days early. Two other programs where I had made an account (but did not submit the application) offered me an extension after the deadline without giving any reason for it. During Yale’s painting/printmaking virtual open house, they said that they have over 1,000 applicants each year per area.
This year there are only 10 places for painting/printmaking.
Even so, the idea that there are less applicants this year seems doubtful. I think that in general there are far more applicants this year—especially for fully-funded programs—since many people have lost their jobs and want the security of a program for a couple of years.
Here is the info I received from a friend in the UK:
Please, please remember that these are not my words and I am just passing it along

I found this on a UK Forum and I thought I would pass it along since it contains US information too.
     _________________________________________________________________
Feedback after attending Virtual Open Houses with crowds of applicants (e.g.150 at meetings with programs that had several dates available).
    Feedback 1
Mostly in the US Virtual meetings, applicants were late 20’s, mostly 30’s and much older, many with reputable jobs: visiting faculty, lecturers, adjuncts, full-tenured professors who worried that their Institution might be closing. Questions asked included, “Can I add a syllabus for a proposed course?” or “Can I send a video of my teaching?” One said “I know your close friends X and Y from Skowhegan,” while another introduced the names of “my recommenders that know you.” Older candidates were aggressive about expressing their need to apply only to fully funded programs since they have a family to support. Do they have priority? They really tried to make an impression. It felt more like a job interview than a virtual open house for students.
    Feedback 2
I totally understand that the US Economy is down the drain. I was super affected too!! But it is frightening to see how the application process has changed so drastically. Will it ever go back to the way it was? Please don’t chastise me for commenting on this but most US faculty in the virtual meetings showed an extreme emphasis on publicizing how they would especially welcome diversity. This is great but I am not a minority and what if the program has only one spot? Am I automatically disqualified? Should I bother applying? Fully funded programs are now out of reach due to the numbers of applicants, and how can you compete with a full professor within the arts who is suddenly switching fields from graphic design to traditional fine arts fields? The search for good funded programs is a must for most of us in this pandemic era. This discourages applications to elite places like Yale, Columbia, NYU, RISD,  Goldsmiths U. of London, Slade School of Art, Kingston U. of London due to poor or no funding offered.
    Feedback 3
I have checked US-UK job postings for MFA graduates in my specific field, and there was only ONE opening for 2021, so why am I even bothering with this? In the UK, the MPhil/DPhil in the arts is seen as a solid degree, not so for the MFA. Would I be a competitive job applicant graduating from a US MFA program located in the middle of nowhere like University of Notre Dame or University of Mississippi? Should I consider a program in Canada (U. of British Columbia)? How will that connect to London (or vice versa, how will I connect to the US scene with an outside degree?). By the way, I was not able to find any programs in NY, Boston, or DC with good funding and living costs are exorbitant.  Los Angeles has California State U.-LA in contrast to UCLA or USCRoski that have very sketchy funding.
    Feedback 4
Last time I applied to University of Notre Dame, but not this time since there is only one spot for my field, and the process is rigged. For three years, I have been in touch with students in the program, they got in because their recommender knew the Chair, or because they knew the Chair. They say it is a ‘one-person-choosing’ kind of program, so no hope there for me. I thought of applying to Tulane this year, but now I am nervous about small programs with one person picking the finalists. Plus fees are killing me. And COVID-19 doesn't give us a break!
    Feedback 5
In the US, there are places that have good funding but no name brand. I liked the affordability of SUNY (Buffalo, Purchase, New Paltz), Wilson College (low-res, low fees), Vermont College of Fine Arts (low-res, affordable). Edinboro U-Pennsylvania (has great faculty), Montana State U. (fully funded), California State U.—Santa Barbara, or San Bernardino (affordable). Also, most places in the UK are very affordable for locals. For foreigners the price is three times higher (it includes EU applicants after Brexit)!!! A new MFA in Environmental Art and Social Practice is starting at California State U.—Santa Cruz. Good packages at U. California (Irvine and Davis). Also, U. of Dallas and U. of Arizona are more affordable—and even Arizona State U. offers a much better financial package than SAIC, MICA, Pratt, Parsons, Corcoran/GWU, SMFA-Tufts.
    Feedback 6
At the US Virtual Open Houses, I was shocked to see that most of us were from outside of the US. I was also surprised to find so many candidates from non-art fields (English, Creative Writing, Philosophy, Music, Anthropology, Sociology, Neuroscience, Environmental Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, History, even a Chemistry major!) applying to traditional art fields (excluding new media/technology). Traditional art fields are becoming extinct or obsolete in some universities. Just take a look at the ‘interdisciplinary’ emphasis nowadays, and so many departments are filled with Kinetics, Animation, VR/AR, etc. Why would traditional art field programs accept applicants who devoted their life to graphic design or sound and imaging, taking spots away from students who are really devoted to their medium?
    Feedback 7
Switching fields seems to be quite frequent nowadays. People introduced themselves from every profession: realtors, hotel administration majors, business owners, home builders. It dawned on me that MFA Art programs are open to applicants from any field, and most do not require an undergrad degree. And it was intimidating to see that within the art field, candidates were art conservators, museum workers, ex-gallery owners, art historians, tattoo artists, many graphic designers, illustrators, even a book-maker, interior designers, and architects!!! Numerous school teachers who had been furloughed due to COVID!!! My heart goes out to them!!!
    Feedback 8
Application fees are too expensive for me to risk going through this process with such high levels of competition. I am gearing towards spending this year trying to get some art residency experience, and maybe meet some ‘connected recommender’ who can write a letter for me next year. One can only hope, right? Of course, the well-known art residencies are not open for 2021 due to deferrals from their 2020 cohort, so what else can I do to improve my 2022 chances? Will this trend continue for the next decade? If so, I do not feel like they prepared us for this level of competition where several generations are flocking to the same posts.

I saw that VCU was intensely promoted on here. Here is my first-hand account of VCU.
First of all, funding has changed considerably from last year (see last section below). It was known as the fully-funded program that was at the top of the USNews list, and now for Painting it has been demoted to #12 within one year.
Second of all, please re-check the faculty you are interested in working with, since some may have retired or are no longer available. Also, VCU is a place where who knows your faculty matters a lot. Of course, this is true for most MFA programs.
Third, you absolutely will not have the same network as someone who studies in LA, San Francisco, NYC, DC, or Boston.
    Here are some other factors:
Richmond: Not a safe city! https://richmondalarm.com/security-tips/most-dangerous-cities-virginia This is particularly important since there is no VCU campus because the buildings are widely spread throughout the city’s downtown area.
Campus community: NONE. Each building functions individually so you only interact with the graduates in your program, so opportunities do not abound to interact with grads outside of your cohort.
There are an abundant number of interdisciplinary MFA programs in the US. For some of us, the attractive feature of VCU's MFA was the opportunity to concentrate on a specific field. This has changed somewhat in recent years. E.g. Very few students are accepted to each specific field, so to lose one of those spots to a student who works in another field is unfair for those who were left out. Open House this year features an MFA Painting+Printmaking student who works with neither, instead using digital media, sound, and video production. This is particularly troubling since there is a VCU MFA in Kinetic Imaging program that works perfect for that.
Also, the program is quite theory-heavy, so you are really pressed for time between assigned readings, crits, and teaching duties. My guess is that most MFA programs are like this, though I expected to have more time to work on advancing my practice.
Funding has decreased. They used to have full tuition remission plus a great stipend guaranteed for all students for both years, but now not everyone receives a TA-ship and the package is not assured for the second year. Aside from counting fees, health insurance, cost of materials for each semester, etc. take into account that living in Richmond can be expensive and that you will probably need a car, which will add to the costs (parking at VCU is always a hassle). Since you are expected to work in your studio over the summer, cost of living is for 12 months. Yes, for some of us, this means loans.
✌️ ✌️ ✌️ these comments are made with goodwill, as I sincerely hope this helps to have a more balanced picture of the real VCU. It is important to weigh the pros and cons of any program.
