Yeah I agree with this.. I'm just not sure what to do because my quant is mid 50s and the other two are in the 80s.. I have an A+ in stats but don't want my quant score to be a red flag

For Canadian schools, I don't think they place as big of an emphasis on the quant GRE. My quant GRE was in the mid 50s and in the fall 2019 cycle I had 5 interviews, 1 offer & 1 wait-list. I ended up declining the offer & applied again for Fall 2020 with the same quant GRE score and ended up with 5 interviews again, 1 offer, 2 waitlists (UBC being one of them) & for the two other schools that I had interviewed, I had asked to be taken out of consideration prior to them making a decision since I accepted an offer from my top pick.

In one of the posts here, I think someone had suggested avoiding extremely competitive schools if your GRE scores are low, I would argue that if you have a really good research match with the researcher at the institution, you should definitely apply (assuming you're in a financial situation where you can do so). It also help emailing the researcher in advance indicating your interest & asking them what they typically look for in a student (not all researcher will be comfortable answering this but most of the people I applied to responded very informatively & positively).

If anyone has any questions regarding my experience, feel free to message me :)

Hi everyone! Hope you are hanging in this week. I need your thoughts...I know it can be a good idea to update programs when we get certain scholarships. What about new work experience specific in clinical psychology and being bumped to primary author on a paper including a conference presentation. This has all happened since I submitted my application. I am still in the running for a few programs and wondering if its worth updating my PI? Help! Thanks! :)

I don't think it would hurt just sending them a quick update about new developments, assuming the first author paper has been accepted or at least submitted. It could potentially tip the scale in your favour if there is another candidate that is on an equal footing as you

NO and it's killing me too :( My POI (not SF tho) said late February/early March so I/we might still have a week to wait, but I hope it's not that long. My nerves are completely fried.

Edit: someone was accepted last week in the CD stream, but I think the offers are going out quite variably so I'm not panicked yet. My POI did tell me that he'd let me know either way (i.e., rejected or accepted)

Fingers crossed!  I am just so exhausted at this point lol.

Hi there, sorry if I am the bearer of bad news but SF completed her interviews a few weeks ago and the open house was on Feb. 14th. I also applied to her and emailed her a few weeks ago to ask for an update.

Hi there! Thank you for the update, I think I might also email to her inquire about my status, if I don't hear anything by the end of next week

Has anyone who was accepted to SFU received their official letter of acceptance (or even had their application go from the green circle to the checkmark in the app portal)? I would love to accept my offer soon but feel like it won't be "official" until the letter comes. Can you formally accept an offer if the official letter hasn't come yet? (Note: I am very well acquainted with the program so I don't need to wait for letter to know funding details, etc.).

In the past few cycles, SFU has topped up their entrance scholarship for those have an offer(s) from other schools. It might be a good idea to wait, if you are still waiting to hear from other programs, to see if you get offers from other schools. If you do get another offer, it might be a good idea to email the grad coordinator to let them know that you are deciding between multiple offers and ask if they can match another offer.

    I'm sorry :(

This is my second time applying to UBC, but I didn't (yet) get this email. I didn't get the chance to interview so I guess it's not the best of news either.

Maybe they straight up forgot about me this year lol

Hang in there! One way or another we'll get through this application season.

Same thing happened when I first applied to UBC. I think they have like a B-list system. That year, I don't think I received a rejection until like late Feb despite not interviewing

Should I follow up after two weeks of waiting after two Skype interviews? I had two Skype interviews with my POI at Queens, the second of which was two weeks ago now. She said that the next step would be an interview with the departmental committee, and that those interviews would likely be held some time at the beginning of February. I haven't heard anything at all yet, either from her or the committee, so I'm assuming probably I was rejected, but wouldn't you think that after two Skype calls she would've just told me over email herself by now? To make matters more confusing, I've been emailing back and forth with one of her grad students, who has no idea what is going on - she didn't even know the departmental interview was a thing. Any suggestions? Should I email my POI for an update?

The clinical committee interview is something that they just started doing this cycle. I just received an email a couple of minutes ago for the clinical committee interview and they gave me two 20 min slots to choose from. I assuming that since the interview involves two clinical faculty, they are sending out the invites in waves given that the faculty probably have limited availability that match with one another. It doesn't hurt to ask but I would maybe give it a few more days

When you're asked "What is an obstacle you've had to overcome and how did you overcome it?", what sort of obstacle are they looking for? I have a difficult interpersonal situation that I'm planning on talking about, but I'm afraid it'll come off as shallow in comparison to someone who has had to face legitimate, personal obstacles in life.

I think these type of questions typically look more at how you responded to the obstacles and less so on the severity of the issue. Obviously, you wouldn't want to present any trivial obstacle but interpersonal situations are completely valid

    Hi everyone!

Has anybody heard from Queen’s? I’m starting to get a little nervous because it’s been so quiet!

My POI informed me that the admissions committee will be meeting next week (or the week after) to make preliminary decisions. Applicants that move on to the next phase will be invited for another Skype interview to assess fit for clinical work (which will likely happen in the 1st or 2nd week of Feb)

    Hey all,

Does anyone know when official acceptances are sent out? Specifically Queen's?

I just heard back from my POI who said that the admission committee for Queens will be meeting possibly next week to make preliminary decisions. Those who pass this phase will be invited to another skype interview (possible in the 1st or 2nd week of Feb) to assess fit with clinical work and then offers will be sent out after that

Out of curiosity, what were the # your interviews the past 2 cycles?

First cycle I got zero interview ? (GRE quant score was super low) and 2nd cycle I got 5 formal interviews, 1 offer, and 1 wait-list (improved GRE quant lol). Ended up declining the offer in the 2nd cycle due to fit with the program. Fingers crossed that I won't have to do a 4th cycle ?

  11. Your frustration is definitely valid! I'm currently trying not to get too bogged down by not having as many interviews as I hoped for (I currently have 3 interviews and 2 preliminary ones). At the end of the day, it really is about getting an offer from a place you would like to go to rather than the sheer number of invites/offers. This is my 3rd cycle applying and talking to a few faculty and grad students, I realized that luck can play a huge factor in this process. The admitting faculty are human too and going through so many qualified applications, sometimes they have to rely on their gut feeling/a degree of random chance when choosing between an already heavily filtered pool of applicants.

It can be frustrating because some of the factors that they may rely on are things that you may have no control over. I remember getting a bit frustrated and down reading that one of the criteria used to assess applicants for a major funding award in Canada is the course load taken in undergrad. The criteria makes total sense to me but I had worked a job since I was 14 years old since my family isn't that well off and because I had to work while in university, I wasn't able to take as many courses per semester as some other students. It may be unfair that because of this, I get dinged a few points on my applications but I feel like I was also able to gain a lot of insight and unique experiences that will hopefully shine in other parts of my application.. Don't give up! You all sound like amazing applicants. We will get where we need to be although the timeline may differ

To how many places are people applying (in Canada)? I had 4 programs last year, all rejections, and somehow I feel this year I need to apply to at least 6+ to increase chances for an interview. What do you guys&gals think?

This year, I am applying to 6 schools--all of which are to specific supervisors that I really want to work with. Last cycle, I applied to roughly the same number of schools but included some back up schools--ended up declining the one offer I got (which was from a back up school). So I guess it depends on whether you just want to get into a clinical program or if you have a specific area of research/training you want. Sometimes you might find that your interests match better with a back up school, so it might be worth the extra money

Exactly. & I’m still waiting on some recs. Luckily they are all apps that allowed 4 Rec submissions & 3 are in so if worse comes to worse I’ll delete the last request at the end of thanksgiving weekend  to complete the apps. Unfortunately the missing Rec is from my most prestigious recommender.

That is stressful. I remember for the last cycle, one of my referees sent their letter on the day that it was due lol. Although I did appreciate her telling me that was her plan, it was still stressful. I feel like a lot of these profs have their own timeline of deadlines given the amount of work that they do, especially if they are super established within their field

  14. A few of the POIs I am applying to indicated in their email that applicants are expected to apply for CGS-M. All of the Canadian application portals that I have an application in asks me if I applied to external funding and a few specifically asks about the CGSM. Although it doesn't ask if I listed them down, I assume that that is also what they are asking? Since CGSM changed it to let us put down only 3 schools rather than 5, is everyone indicating that they did not apply for CGSM on the application portals of the schools that they did not list down on the CGSM?

  15. If you sent the score to them, I would briefly mention it in your SOP. Many applications also have a part where they ask the applicants if there are any considerations that they would like the admin committee to know when reviewing their application, if your app had this option, it would be a good idea to say it there instead. I would also call/email ETS and let them know. GRE requires a high degree of attentional focus to do well, I definitely would not be able to focus too.

Does anyone know if Rutgers and Stony Brook require official transcripts for Clinical PhD admissions?

    edit for clarity

I emailed the grad admin in the psyc department at Rutgers and she said they will count my uploaded transcript as completed. I would send her an email for your peace of mind, she seems really nice

Note: I uploaded my official rather than sending a hard copy. They will likely require a hard copy of you accept an offer, though
