spectrum-in got a reaction from eclectus_red in How much editing is normal between conference paper and post-conference publication?
It's probably good to check with the editorial guidelines, but as far as I'm concerned for most conference proceedings it's normal and perhaps expected to take into account the discussion during the Q&A which may very well mean reworking the argument. I would say as long it's recognizably the same idea/argument, then you should make it as good as possible before it goes into print with your name on it. I've dealt with three such volumes either directly or indirectly and while all of them were very different sorts of publications, they all produced papers that were markedly different than the ones presented at the conference (though clearly genealogically related).

Eleventh hour acceptance off the UPenn waitlist on Monday!! Grateful.
When I got the news, I was stranded in O'Hare after having been bumped from four (!) consecutive flights standby following Sunday's surprise snowstorm. I can now cross spending the night in the terminal off my bucket list. Eeks. The moral of the story is that this amazing news almost, almost made O'Hare tolerable.
I forgot my GC pword for a while, but I want to say congrats to everyone--no matter what acceptances/waitlists/rejections you're left holding at the end of the cycle--bc this process is brutal and can be so heartwrecking. Last year at this time, I was bracing for another tenuous year of adjunct teaching. Academia is something, but it is not everything.

Accepted off the waitlist at UC Davis. First acceptance out of 5 applications.

Late to the game, but I accepted my offer a few days ago at Brown!
I had a fairly idiosyncratic application process in the sense that I applied across disciplines but literary studies has always been my intellectual "home" and I'm very excited to start next fall congratulations everyone!

Just sent off decisions from the Madison airport as my plane is boarding. Literally.
Turns out my user icon was prophetic—burnt orange all the way. Headed to UT Austin in the fall!

Officially going to UVA!
Thanks to everyone who has helped with advice, information, and just generally making this community the supportive place it is. I've been here for 3 years now and I'm glad to be moving on to the next stage finally.

I accepted the University of Michigan's offer, PhD in American Culture. Feeling strangely ambivalent about it; it's a great program with tons of resources and I'm excited to begin the journey, but I do not like the location at all. Hoping to make the best of it as no offer had everything I was looking for.
Now to have a glass of wine. I'm relieved that this part of the process is over.

Accepted off the waitlist at UVA! I can hardly believe it, I was sure it wasn't going to happen.
If there any people who went to the visit, or who are current or ex students, please DM me! I'd like to ask some questions about the area and there's not really a lot of time to wait for responses through the regular channels.

i've officially accepted michigan!! (which is a relief as my birthday was recently and a lot of my friends bought me michigan-related gifts... would've been an amazing but shortlived punchline to have been like "haha actually i'm staying at oxford but thanks anyway i guess").

MFA lurker, but as someone who lives in an expensive city I'd like to offer my two cents. As trytostay says, you can make it work with sacrifices, but you should consider if those sacrifices are viable long-term. If rent is your primary expense and you have little to no savings, will you be able to weather an unexpected expense? Can you rely on your family to throw you $500 for an unplanned hospital stay or a vet bill? This, in my opinion, is the difference between surviving and floundering for many young people in expensive cities.

Also on the NYU waitlist and hoping to hear something positive by the end of this week! My partner and I would love to be in the city because we absolutely hate the idea of having to get a car and organize our lives around driving. We currently live in a city and are finding it difficult to imagine the next five or six years in a college town.
A question in a similar vein: how is NYU healthcare?

Just received an offer off the waitlist from Johns Hopkins! Time for the difficult deliberations that some part of me wished would never be necessary. Still, not complaining; I feel unbelievably fortunate to have this choice that needs making.

I emailed the dgs saying, "I wanted to update you on the status of my decisions. I have decided to go to another institution for my MA/PhD. I truly appreciate all the time and resources that has been put behind my acceptances to ____. Let me know if there are any more steps to make this decision official. All the best___".
I kept it short and simple and each program responded with well wishes. A few did ask which school I went with and I told them! You may wish to follow-up with your POI's. I did this for one school and they were very understanding and asked me to keep in contact throughout my schooling!.

Long time lurker here! This thread has been so helpful so I wanted to add my own contribution: I sent in, via snail mail, my decline for UToronto's fully-funded PhD offer a few days ago. I'm from the States, so it might take a bit of time to arrive - but I did want to post in case anyone is waiting on them!
