  1. I have been so busy that I haven't been on here in over a month! It is nice to come back and read where everybody ended up, with many surprises along the way. After having the opportunity to visit both Yale and Harvard, I actually decided to decline Yale and go with Harvard. As many here probably know, I was decidedly Yale, but Harvard really chipped away over the final month, and they stole my heart during the visit day. Overall, they offered many things that Yale just could not, and the worries that I had about Yale seemed not to be present at Harvard. Therefore, I felt most comfortable going with Harvard, and I feel fairly confident in my decision.

Anyone have any idea what's happening with Chicago? I'd like to accept my current top offer ASAP so I can deal with visa stuff, but it feels wrong to do that when Chicago is still active (albeit highly unlikely given offers went out).

    Chicago told me this:

"Your application is currently in final review. We expect to begin sending out official decisions late February to early March. This process can take several days to complete; there is no way to know when in the process your decision will be sent. No further changes or additions to your application may be made."

If you wait another week you should hear back, I would hope. I am almost certain they will send decisions before their visit day, which is the 7th and 8th. However, judging from the results page, all the decisions sent out in March have always been nothing but rejections.

Wow really? I thought he went to Penn. I would Google it but I don't want to look at his face...

No, he went to WHARTON. ?When I was an undergraduate at UPenn, all the people who were in the Wharton business school would never say they went to UPenn, rather it was always "I go to Wharton". You can even see it on the gradforum results page from time to time.

Also admitted to Yale! After talking with people I'm getting a little worried about living in New Haven haha, it really has a bad rep. Trying to reserve judgement until I get there.

Seems like East Rock is a popular place to live, and Whitney Ave.

Personally, I am not nervous at all. New Haven looks fine (even most of the "bad neighborhoods"), crime has been trending down, and it is not that difficult to stay out of trouble. As someone who has lived in places that are far worse than New Haven, I can tell you that crime statistics are very misleading and that it will probably never impact you personally.

Finally got the Harvard HoS rejection as well! Not to be overly dramatic, but that "Unfortunately, enrollment of new students is limited to a small number who are qualified for admission" line is just... is so badly phrased, it really makes it easier to not feel disappointed about not getting in. We all know that far more qualified people apply than they can admit - there is zero reason to phrase it this way, other than optics. Congrats to the admits tho!

Sorry to hear about the rejection. I totally agree with your assessment of that line, by the way. I am  stunned by what some of these schools choose to go with. I would like to give them the benefit of the doubt and think they meant "qualified" in the sense that enrollment is limited to the small number who have been chosen for admissions, but that seems a bit too redundant to be true... either way not a good look!

Just been notified that I have been waitlisted for Georgetown! Considering my only other communications have been rejections, I don’t feel too bad about it.

This is new to me - Is there anything I need to do? Eg. Should I write a response, or is it possible to request my ranking on the waitlist if I contact admission?

Yes, I recommend you write to request your ranking (if there is one). This will give you a better idea of whether you actually have a chance of being accepted. You could even ask (or find on the website)  the total number typically matriculated,  which put in relation to the number of offers typically given would also give you a good idea of your chances. Many History departments will do waitlist by sub-field rather than ranking, but in the case it probably means that you are either the A or B alternate for your field. Good luck!

Not a damn thing. Nada. Nothing.

Just to clarify, did you apply to the History program, or is American History part of a separate program, like American Studies? In either case, you may want to e-mail them and ask them!

Holy heck, man. It's unbelievable. The waiting is bad enough without the added anxiety of seeing others accepted and rejected.

Nothing appears on your portal either? Usually they send waitlists out before the rejections, so I am wondering what is going on in your case.

Thank you for this excellent advice - I would not have thought to ask about this! Speaking of which, am visiting Austin this weekend and was wondering if anyone has last minute advice, questions I should ask, etc. Although I've made a running list and browsed the "Interviews and Visits" forum, it'd be good to get a sense of what history applicants have asked during their interviews?

Have you seen the newest thread, 2019 Visit Days/Decisions? People have given lists of questions they asked/think people should generally ask. It is a very useful thread and I suggest reading it if you have not!

Just got my UPenn rejection today, so they should be coming in for others that have been waiting. Hope everyone has a happy weekend!

Sorry to hear about your rejection. The process of reviewing seems to be over for most schools, so hopefully you hear good news from your remaining three soon!

I just realized most of the schools I applied to state they notify "in February" or "by early March", which... is not exactly transparent. Re: Chicago, I know they have notified people in Anthro and CompLit, but those were also departments that interviewed, so. Fingers crossed for all of us. ?

    Yes, best of luck spacea!

An additional thing that I read on this forum is that a History applicant from a previous year was told by Chicago that they would have taken them if they would have expressed more clearly that Chicago was a top 3 choice. Chicago felt that this person would have definitely turned them down, and so did not admit them, even though they would have liked to. Something to perhaps keep in mind for future applicants. I know on my application for Yale I made is clear they were at the top of my list, and while I do not know if it made any difference, it certainly did not hurt. I do know that Chicago History's number of accepted applicants has been trending down yearly, and this probably fuels some of that mentality.

That's great to know re: Chicago, thank you!

No problem! I finally got fed up after hearing from every other school. What makes it so frustrating is that I know they start contacting some applicants in late January. Chicago for all their departments has a rather strange application review process. I think part of it is that they seem to have some issues with funding and that they also feel like they have to compete with higher ranked schools. Therefore, they begin contacting early to try to secure, but their normal process seems to lag behind all those schools, and some of that might be due to waiting to hear if their early-contacted applicants are still interested or not after receiving other offers. Of course, this is all speculation.

  13. I e-mailed Harvard to ask about my rank on the waitlist. They told me that I was ranked number 1, so it seems I have a pretty good chance of being admitted. I would recommend anyone to e-mail a school they have been waitlisted at and ask if they have a ranked list so that you can have a better idea of where you stand. Mind you, not all of them will. For instance, UPenn does not rank their waitlisted applicants.

Additionally, as I still have not heard back from the University of Chicago, I e-mailed them to ask about the status of my application. For those of you who are still waiting on Chicago, it might be of interest to you. The response is as follows:

"Your application is currently in final review. We expect to begin sending out official decisions late February to early March. This process can take several days to complete; there is no way to know when in the process your decision will be sent. No further changes or additions to your application may be made."

That's so nice of you, thank you!  Hopefully we'll all get Cornell acceptances over the next day or two!  ?  Hoping it's just a matter of POI's sending emails out at their own rate and mine being busy atm!

I looked through all of the past years and it appears that it is always done through the POI, and that it seems to happen over a stretch of a few days due to the variability inherent in having them announce the decision personally. I am going to guess that they have until Monday to make the e-mail, and rejections will probably come out then.

  15. Yale recommends off-campus housing search begin during the period of March-May. However, in my past experience at my BA, and even for my current MA, I did not get apartments until July/August. So really the answer is, it is up to you and what you want. If you wait longer, you might be forced to pay more for a place you want. My suggestion is to start contacting apartments now and asking about availability.

I meant to post this earlier, but I got the notification while on my way to see Hamilton.... I got my second acceptance! I was accepted into the MA to PhD program in American history at SLU. I emailed the program director to see if a switch into the early modern history program was possible and will probably ask my current faculty mentor (who does some very interesting work) about possibly working with me for a masters.

I honestly didn't expect to have to weigh two options, but I'm so glad I have to!

Have you heard about funding from Villanova? Which school are you leaning toward at the moment?

  17. I received an e-mail this morning informing me that I was actually not rejected, but rather have been placed on the wait list at UPenn. They make the claim that generally several wait listed applicants end up being admitted by the April 15th deadline. They also asked me whether or not I would like to accept or decline the wait list status. I know many people on here were applying to Penn, so did anybody else receive a wait list?

Looks like Yale HSHM results are coming out today. I was rejected, which wasn't a surprise; Yale was the most tenuous fit for my research interests and was the application I decided to do at the "last minute" (September).

I know a handful of folks here are waiting on those results. I have my hopes up for you!

Wish I could "dislike" your post without having to down downvote it. ? Still holding out hope for Cornell. ?
