Looks like NYU sent out acceptances and rejections yesterday. I have yet to hear about the status of my application. Wondering if there are others in a similar situation? And does this mean wait-listing!

You know to be deadly honest, all I want it a note that says "No, it's over." But what I want attached is a breakdown of the number of apps, waitlists, accepts, etc. That said, I'm saddened that these programs won't take all of 10-15 minutes for each applicant to give some idea of why they were rejected and/o what might've contributed to a stronger and more desirable profile. That would seem kind and respectful and would allow us to stop guessing and maybe even better tailor our apps next time if we reapply.

@Umairrasheed Based on past years' results it seems that acceptances and waitlists come out at the same time (around now) and rejections come out later in March. As to why departments don't send out rejections at the same time as acceptances, my theory is that they're just a bunch of assholes who enjoy watching applicants suffer, especially since most rejection letters are quite generic. But that's just my very anxious and salty self saying that ?
Has anyone heard anything about CU Boulder/Can the mysterious creature who got the acceptance on feb 9th share what's the deal? Also does anyone remove one's name from a waitlist without sounding douchey?

Hey everyone, checking in to keep everyone motivated on the best possible outcome! Fingers crossed ... let's keep our heads up. It isn't over until we receive that final decision.

@Umairrasheed it was an email from Sue Douglas, the graduate coordinator/administrator. She said only 5% of applicants were offered admission.

Enjoy your holiday! My friend who applied for PhDs last year (Fall 2018) intentionally timed his wisdom tooth extraction for around the time decisions were coming, so he'd be unconscious/loopy/blissfully ignorant.

@Umairrasheed Yes, they do in fact prepare a long list first, then, after interviewing candidates they prepare a short list. I counted 4 Chicago interviews, but not everyone who is contacted posts on this website, unfortunately. So take the posts with a grain of salt. Lastly, I think you are correct, most programs take 4-6 students, depending on the program, funding available etc.

Hey @UmairrasheedI think for Berkeley 4 - 5 for each stream (Anthropology and Medical Anthropology) may be correct. According to Peterson's, 247 applied last year and 11 enrolled. Regarding the other universities mentioned, UMichigan (181 applied, 21 accepted, 11 enrolled) and Chicago (260 applied, 19 accepted, 11 enrolled).
If you mean each concentration (Archaeology, Biology, Sociocultural, and Medical) having 4 - 5 applicants, I do not think that is the case. As for the number directly admitted per stream, this may be dependent on the faculty accepting graduate students per year. I would not assume that there is a hard acceptance rate per sub-discipline as some years may see a good number of sociocultural applicants admitted, others may see a greater number of archaeology applicants admitted.
In regards to interviews, it really depends on the department. Duke definitely interviews its shortlisted candidates. In such a case, I do believe they create a shortlist of applicants in whom they are interested and the interview is to assess fit, personality, interests, etc.
I hope that helps in some regard.

I still think it's a mistake and it will be revoked or something...but I was accepted to UNC! I...I can't believe it. I thought there was no way. Went there for undergrad and will be thrilled to be back on campus. Go Heels!

Hello Umairrasheed, going by last years decision, you can expect UMich, UChicacgo, and UofT to send out their decisions around early February (possibly the first week). From experience, I know Canadian applicants at UofT usually hear back earlier than international applicants - I'm not sure if this affects you. While for NYU, I am not sure, though it seems some interviews for the bioanth track have been sent out (but, I know this varies).
Good luck on your applications, fingers crossed!
