    Hello all!
My name is Megan. I'm currently a 1st year student at MGH-IHP and I work for the Office of Enrollment Services. With COVID-19 affecting schools around the nation, including ours, we've been challenged to be a little more creative than usual. To that end, I've been asked to create "Why IHP?" resources. I already have a few ideas influenced by how I picked my attendance at the IHP, but I'd love to hear what you have to say! What questions do you have about MGH IHP? Are there questions you have that are making settling on one school difficult? Ask me anything! Help me help you  Wishing you all the best with this process ❤️

I second @musicalmini’s response. IHP does a great job with looking at students/applicants as a whole. There are many ways you can make a rockstar application that don’t involve numbers. Good luck!

I’m a current student at IHP and my personal statement was very similar. The school really does well with inclusivity and cultural competency. Our professors are open to all kinds of feedback so they can ensure that everyone learns and grows in a safe environment. I feel very safe and happy to be surrounded by a great cohort!

I'm currently attending the IHP and I would say you have really good chances! Knowing the teachers here though, of course grades are important, most of what they take into consideration when picking the class is your essay (especially the diversity essay) and the letters of rec. They really care about people and not numbers. Good luck!

Does anyone know if I can send my Recommendation Request Links before I submit my application? I have a professor that wants the electronic link by November 10th but the application is not due until January 10th. Also, does anyone have any information about UNR's program? Thank you in advance.

    Hi everyone!
No grad school for me this fall, which is okay Who else is beefing up their resumes and trying again?? I was rejected everywhere but one school last year (couldn't afford it, turned it down), was wait listed at 5 schools this year and rejected at 3, seems like we're on track to get in if I keep putting in the work haha.
Congrats to everyone who got in this year, can't wait to work with you all in the future. Logging off for a few months - what a process

Hello! Grad school is the first time in my entire life - literally - that I have been able to easily make friends. I now go to social events without having to force myself to because I actually enjoy them. This is completely new for me! I think there is something about being around people with similar interests and goals that makes bonding much easier.

I think what @AlwaysaFalcon was referring to is most speech-language pathology programs send out their initial acceptances by April 15, and those students are usually asked by the individual schools to respond by April 15.  I don’t think she was referring to the resolution.

This worries me too but remember speech-language pathology is one of those career paths where you'll always have a job and be able to pay off those loans. It's scary but if it's what you truly want to do you should do it. It's super expensive and loans are scary, but you'll get a job that pays well enough to pay them off.

Hi! While I think internships and research experience look good on your application I wouldn’t necessarily think they are make or break for getting into grad school. If your school has any research opportunities that you can take advantage of your senior year I would at least try to get in. It’s never too late! I would also say it doesn’t exclusively have to be in communication disorders. Even experience in a related field is still experience. (I did one semester in a psychology lab. Only one because I don’t exactly like the research aspect too much) An alternative: if you still feel you need to show some experience you might be to make up for it by doing more than the minimum 25 observation hours? I hope this helps!

Congrats! That's amazing!! And not a weird question at all. Fair warning, this is no particular order! So, for me personally: Our scope of practice and all of the things that we can pursue as SLPs is HUGE, but what I've always been most intrigued by is the literacy aspect of speech therapy. MGH offers classes and clinical experiences in written language disorders, which I've really never seen at all in other programs, and because they offer various tracks and the electives to go with them, I can really focus on the part of speech that I love the most, while also getting a well-rounded academic and clinical education in every other aspect of the speech world. I love that they are in Boston, and it's not totally in central Boston which I personally actually prefer, because it's not as wild people-wise and is set on this beautiful location on the water, and yet you can easily drive or take the T to placements throughout the Greater Boston area. I really like that we don't start clinic until about a month in, so they ease us into it that way with seminars and whatnot, and then after the first two semesters, everyone does three different placements (medical, school, and one more which tends to be in some specialty-- the grad student I spoke to was doing it with an AAC specialist, which sounds AMAZING), so you really get to experience so many different of the subfields in our career and get comfortable with it all. And I really like the professors are not old and retired lol, they're still working and doing research and are completely up to date on best practices, yet everyone I met seemed so ridiculously down to earth and welcoming, to the point where students call their profs by their first names? I wanted to go to a program that was warm and welcoming, yet would give me a great education and make me come out feeling confident in my abilities as an SLP, and I feel like their combination of electives and clinical opportunities will really help me with that last part. Cons: the price of the program and Boston in general is obviously really high, and the courseload seems more than other programs. But I feel like for me, the pros outweigh the cons, because I honestly wouldn't have the opportunities that I would have in my future specialty as an SLP anywhere else.

Hey! I just googled MGH off campus housing, and it should pop up. You just need to sign up as a guest, and they'll send you account information within a couple of weeks. It says like 2 days, but it seems like it takes longer than that.

My friend saw this and sent it to me immediately. I am currently deciding where to grad school (you can see my choices in my signature), but I was a Voice Performance - Opera undergrad (soprano) from Westminster Choir College, and I’m now finishing up a second degree/post bacc in SLP. My dream is to also work with singer (obviously with my background) so I have A TON of information to give you.

Feel free to send me a private message. I can give you my number and we can talk about all the options if you’re serious about medical and voice.
