I haven't heard about a Facebook group yet! I have been thinking about emailing Erica soon because she said something about getting all of us in touch.
I am moving up to Portland from Reno, Nevada, so I'll need to make some friends.
So excited to have finally found another PSU person!

My understand is it means you are in the first batch of people on the wait-list that the program would send acceptances to as soon as someone declines their offer of attendance.

Just got off the waitlist at ASU and accepted it. Will be rescind my offer to University of Nevada, Reno and will be declining my waitlist spots at University of Oregon and Loma Linda. I hope this helps someone else on a waitlist. And it's proof you can get off a waitlist!

My gues is there will be a lot of waitlist action on 8/15 and the couple days after as students have made there final decisions and departments get organized.  Good luck!

Hi! While I think internships and research experience look good on your application I wouldn’t necessarily think they are make or break for getting into grad school. If your school has any research opportunities that you can take advantage of your senior year I would at least try to get in. It’s never too late! I would also say it doesn’t exclusively have to be in communication disorders. Even experience in a related field is still experience. (I did one semester in a psychology lab. Only one because I don’t exactly like the research aspect too much) An alternative: if you still feel you need to show some experience you might be to make up for it by doing more than the minimum 25 observation hours? I hope this helps!

I am in a similar situation would love to hear people's advice.
The advice I have been given is you rescind your offer and lose your deposit.

What are some suggestions? Do I follow up with anyone, I don't want to be redundant and harass? I have to make a deposit at another school and register for the Fall term but I want to attend the school I'm wait listed for!

Hi @lasmith thank you so much for sharing this! I think being so far apart would be something very difficult for both of us, however, my partner is very supportive of me and I am very lucky in that sense.  Taking everything into account including your and your friend's advice I think I am leaning to attending UIUC. I am hesitant,  but you are right I need to do what will encourage my own growth and maybe in the process, this will make our relationship blossom even more. I thank you very much for your advice and I wish you the best as well. I am sure you will thrive and succeed wherever you decide to attend!  😊💗

Hi, I am in a similar situation. My boyfriend and I are in a long-term relationship, 3 years in June. He followed me up to Nevada and I got into UNR, my undergrad institution. He's made it clear that he would not move with me to grad school, which frustrates me greatly. But he is also trying to save up money and hopefully get a degree. I am apart of a sorority on campus and have a close relationship with our LDC. She is employed by our sorority to helps us as we are newer on campus. She is in a relationship and because she lives in Reno and is from the east coast, it is currently long distance. She said moving away from her family and boyfriend has caused major growth. Explained to me if you are in a strong relationship, moving away for a set period of time, is not that bad. I know it's a hard decision to make, but it's not the worst thing and should not take priority in making a choice. You should choose what's best for you and for your career. In the long run it's your future and your career. And maybe it's best to stay close to him and where you are. I hope this helps and it's just my personal view on it, coming from a similar situation. (Also I may have a different view because I am a young one. I am only 21 and still have alot of life to live.)
My other piece of advice is talk to your friends, sometimes they can help you see more clearly. They can help you make an educated pro's con's list and help you look at it from different perspectives.
I hope this helps. I wish you the best of luck in making a decision, I know its hard. Keep us updated on what you chose.

I feel for both of you. I think @lasmith is right that you have to choose what’s right for you. For some, the best career choice is with their partner. It really just depends on your relationship. For me and my husband, we couldn’t have gone back to school if not for the flexibility and financial support we provided each other. Even when finances weren’t perfectly aligning to go back to school, he didn’t let me chicken out. As I’ve considered schools, him and his career have been a huge factor for me (despite his willingness to uproot and move halfway across the country if that’s what I needed) because we’re a team - an effective one
You know your relationship and your goals. Make the decision you won’t regret (I know, easier said than done).
Sidenote, I’m a big fan of CSU’s and their low tuition. That’s definitely been a decisive factor for me personally.
    Good luck!

lasmith reacted to Emily T. in Getting a job from out of state
So I have just accepted my admissions at UW. I am planning to move up to Seattle right after graduation, and I want to work a summer job to save money before school. I prefer to avoid putting my job search off until I get there if I can. Does anyone have any advice on finding jobs from out of state? The job search websites, like Indeed or Glassdoor, are somewhat overwhelming, so any tips and tricks on finding a job using such websites or any other means are appreciated.

I agree with the people above! Choosing which school you'd like to go to is a huge deal and you want to be happy with wherever you end up going. I'm in a similar situation as you and the April 15th deadline is approaching fast, so I'm thinking I will put a deposit down at one of the schools I was accepted into. If I get off of the waitlist from one of my tops schools after the 15th, and the tuition and program is better, I will probably rescind my offer. I'm going to feel horrible doing this, but this is a huge chapter in our lives and we want to make the decision that's best for us!! Best of luck with whatever you end up doing

lasmith reacted to bibliophile222 in living alone in grad school?
I live with my long-term partner. I love him, of course, but I do kind of fantasize about how wonderful it would be to live alone! It can definitely be hard to get reading done when the TV is on or if he's being talkative. I'm also a loner at heart and am pretty much never lonely or bored when I'm by myself.
However, although I've had bad experiences with roommates in the past, some girls in my cohort live together and it's worked out really well for them. If you find someone who's also a grad student (aka someone who respects study time and quiet!) that you're compatible with it can be beneficial. If you live with someone else, DEFINITELY come up with a list of house rules that you can both agree on. There may still be drama regardless. I think it's just kind of a crap shoot!

I accepted to all three of three programs I was accepted into, and after I received the financial aid info, I rescinded two (including my undergrad). Just be professional, rescind politely and acknowledge your appreciation for the opportunity as early as you can. Congrats!

Just rescind your offer, there won't be any hard feelings. They'll fill up your spot with someone else. The earlier you do it, the better so that they can prepare appropriately. (I rescinded offers from schools, so I speak from experience.)

You weren't offered an interview, people who were interviewed are on the waitlist. Why would you think that you would be offered a waitlist spot or admission without an interview?

I can answer for them, and you know the answer deep inside as well - you've been denied admission.

I am in a very similar situation, as well. I have only been accepted at my undergraduate institution. But I have been waitlisted at my top two choices. But one has made it clear I won't hear back until after April 15th and the other doesn't have a timeline, but let's be real it will most likely be after April 15th.  My friends, from my undergrad institution, and family have made it clear that it is okay to rescind your acceptance of an offer for a better offer. I really do not want to do something like that though because it feels like I am burning bridges. My friends keep telling me that it will be fine and they will understand. But I am also trying to convince myself to stay here, even though its not ideally what I want to do. Sorry it is not a straight answer, but I understand what you are going through.

My friend saw this and sent it to me immediately. I am currently deciding where to grad school (you can see my choices in my signature), but I was a Voice Performance - Opera undergrad (soprano) from Westminster Choir College, and I’m now finishing up a second degree/post bacc in SLP. My dream is to also work with singer (obviously with my background) so I have A TON of information to give you.

Feel free to send me a private message. I can give you my number and we can talk about all the options if you’re serious about medical and voice.
