You shouldn't feel inadequate at all. Usually there is more qualified applicants than there is space in a cohort. Being waitlisted means that they saw potential in you but there may have been people with higher stats. Also, you never know exactly what a admissions team is looking for. But my point is if they did not want you there, you would have gotten rejected. Hope this helps and best of luck!

Umm you shoudnt feel inadequate. There were probably more qualified people than you which usually happens. Then you probably wanted to add newer people to the school and get out of state tuition. You probably would qualify for in state since you have already been there. Most schools look at who will make them some extra money. Don't feel like anything less in your cohort. You got accepted into a graduate school. Remember your value. 100's of people literally get accepted off the waitlist. I was accepted off the waitlist. I would be different if you were rejected first then they came back saying "Oh hey wanna join". Don't let a little "waitlist" decrease your worth.

I'd agree with what lasmith said! There are a lot of qualified applicants, and every admissions team is looking for something different. People get accepted with a variety of GPAs and GRE scores, from in and out of the field, with widely different extracurricular experiences, straight from undergrad or with years of work experience, etc. I'd imagine that admissions boards are looking for different applicants in order to have a diverse cohort as well.
I think it will be much more important what you do in your graduate studies, because that will define you in that new situation! I doubt that once you start school anyone will really be comparing who got accepted or who got waitlisted, and what all your stats were. You'll do great! I'm planning to attend the school where I was accepted off the waitlist with no regrets.

My grad program is the same: a B- is failing but a B is fine. Even though Bs are fine, they're way too close to a B- for my liking, so I still aim for an A! However, once you're in grad school, your professors do care about your success (both genuinely as people and because dropout rates negatively affect their program completion stats) and will work with you when you're struggling. The good news is that despite all the hard work of grad school, getting in is probably the toughest part!

I am finishing up my post-bacc year and here's my advice.
    1. Take the GRE, especially if you are good at verbal sections! You will significantly limit your options if you try to only find schools that don't require the GRE.
    2. Look at the program pre-requitsites. There were a number of schools I immediately had to discount because, even with my post-bacc year, I would have to take 3-6 classes the summer before the program started.
    3. Use ASHA edfind to make a strategic list of schools. (Some of the highest acceptance rates I've seen are at city schools (like MGH), probably because they are so expensive, so you could think of a really good school as a safety school in that way). My general strategy was to apply to schools that my GPA and GRE scores were roughly equal to or higher. If my GRE scores were quite a bit higher (by 3 or more(ish) points) and the acceptance rate was above 25% I thought of it as more like a "safety" school.
    4. If you're interested in working with with adults, ask programs coordinators/current students what the options are for placements in adult care settings. There are some programs that are pretty hyper pediatric. I know that it's an ASHA requirement to have an adult population externship for every program but it's still something to consider. I also want to work with seniors and I was always extra drawn to schools that had an aphasia clinic or something along those lines.
I considered Kent State a safety school and I went to visit. I think it's a great safety school option! It seemed like a good program. WVU was my other safety. If you're in the area, that could be another option? There's also Edinboro University near Erie.

From what I've gathered from other posts/forums, you should be able to put down a deposit for the school you were accepted to so you can secure that spot while you wait for the other schools to notify you about the waitlist decision. You should be able to withdraw by emailing admissions (or if there's a student portal, perhaps there's a withdrawal option). People can get accepted off the waitlist as last as August because there may be a student who withdraws their acceptance because they changed their mind about the school (either they were accepted off a waitlist from a school they were waiting for or they decided not to pursue the degree at all). If you're okay with losing the deposit, then I absolutely recommend putting the deposit down for EWU and waiting to see if you get another offer.  Best of luck!

Most Grad schools have a GPA requirement you must keep to stay in. Usually you must maintain a B average or 3.0 to stay in. Although, most of the faculty will help and support you to make sure you're not getting "kicked out". Getting asked to leave is usually a last resort and any times I have heard of it happening it was because the grad student really was not loving it and did not want to be there anymore.

I am SO late responding to this, but I just wanted to take a minute and say thank you. You genuinely gave me hope and kept me going through this stressful process and I’m so sorry I’m just now responding!! I did have to send all my transcripts which was a pain!! I took the GRE a total of FIVE times so lol at that. On my last try my score stayed about the same, but my AW score went up to a 4.5!!!! I really think that helped out my application. I think my GRE from my old school and explaining that I finished my CSD undergrad classes in two years because I was so determined to be an SLP. My LORs and personal statement were super strong and I took all your advice into writing them so thanks for the insight!! As for ASHA EdFind, I scoured pretty much every school in the southeast and ended up applying to seven. Exciting news: as of right now I have two offers of admission and couldn’t be more thrilled. I’m having such a hard time deciding, but am so beyond thankful for my two acceptances!!!

I do not know specifics about the CDS/ Speech Path program at CBU, but I have had friends who attended their as an undergraduate and I know it is skewed across the board. I have been told that the baptist is like their middle name, and you do not go by your middle name. So not everyone there is christian and some people are super religious. (Not sure that helps, but that is my insight.) Good Luck to all.

It is not because they do not have a great program from what I can tell, it is because if I was going to go back to California to "save money", I wasn't really going to save money going here. It is expensive to live in San Jose and I don't really like the city that much. If I was going to pick a financial option it was going to be Sac State. (Which I have yet to hear from.) I truly picked it because it was two hours from my parents. I thought if I went tried to go too far away they would not like it. I am an only child (my parents are very attached to me) and the farthest I have lived away is two ish hours in Reno. We usually see each other twice a month. But if I moved farther away, that would not be an option.  Since, I have gotten waitlisted at ASU and UO, my top schools. My parents are all for me going to one of these schools if I get off the waitlisted. Not a reaction I expected. It does seems like a great program for bilinguals, which I am not. San Jose is also very diverse, which would be great when working in clinics and giving therapy. Plus, they have several grants that fund their program. For me, it was not a match personally, but it seems like a great program. I am not sure that helps or is the answer you wanted. Good luck on picking a program and your future endeavors and congrats to getting in to SJSU!

I got waitlisted yesterday. I also am not upset about it because I already got into my top choice and I don't want to have to consider a slightly cheaper option than my top choice haha.

I'm not sure about affordability, but as everyone has mentioned, the west coast states are INSANELY competitive.  I'm native to California and I have decent enough stats, but I haven't gotten into any schools in California, Oregon, or Washington.  Had I realized how unlikely it was to get in, I might have saved the money on application fees, LOL.  If you're looking into the western states in general, there are some outstanding programs in Montana, Idaho, Colorado, Nevada, Arizona, and Wyoming!   My advice is not to give up on the west coast, but to spread out your applications to a wide array of schools!

I think that sounds perfectly reasonable. I'm sure they're aware that people may have multiple options that they need to carefully consider before accepting. I don't think they'd take away your spot or think less of you for needing more time to think!
