I’m in grad school and still feel unprepared! Take some time to digest what they told you and take some time to decompress the overwhelm. Don’t hesitate to reach out to the program if you need clarification on something.

This is far more important than following a graph categorizing your ENTIRE application on GPA alone.

Department said it is a letter? I’ve been wondering if they’ll come via email or post mail? I’m in the same boat as everyone here! Mid March is way too vague. This waiting game is definitely the most mentally challenging part of this whole process, of which I was completely unprepared for! I’m hoping next week is the week. Maybe they’ll send out letters today?? One can hope right?!

@Jen Kelley My stats are also a bit lower as well. Definitely applied to MedSLP as a reach! I'm also on the east coast, so it will take a lot for me to uproot everything here haha.

If you're like me and have been spending a slightly unhealthy amount of time on this website in the last few weeks (whoops), or you're needing some cheering up, check out this thread for lots of laughs. It's the good, the bad, and the ugly, and not only does it make some rejections hurt less, but some of the posts are so funny that it's pretty much the most wholesome thing on this site.
Don't forget self-care during this wild time. Enjoy!! ?

Commenting to follow! I agree the waiting is the worst part. I check my email/mailbox/this website every 5 minutes. It’s driving me crazy!

None of my schools have released decisions yet. I'm getting to the irrational place where even a rejection sounds nice right about now. ha
    Anyone else?

It also seems to me that a rejection may also indicate that no decision was entered yet. Hard to tell, but hopefully that is the case?

How did the funding work for MGH? For people who got them, did they just tell you on the call right after they told you about your acceptance, or did you ask about it?

lasmith got a reaction from Suelli5 in Reaching out to schools that rejected you
If you're curious I heard back from the graduate director on the school I got rejected from. I was told I was a strong applicant but there was just a high volume of applicants, which was the same thing I was told by the graduate admissions office. The only extra bit of information I got was that the stats of applicants interviewed were a bit higher than mine. Although I find this interesting since I have seen people getting interviewed here with lower GPAs and lower GRE scores getting interviewed here. I believe that this must be because they probably take their students first and out of state applicants get to fight for left overs and I didn't make that cut. Anyways, my verdict is if doesn't hurt to reach out. Best of luck!

I've read on this board that many people were accepted to more competitive schools but rejected from their safety schools.  The theory was that schools know that if an applicant is overqualified they are likely to decline and admission offer, and schools don't want to risk having a spot unfilled due to too many declines. I don't know if that's true, but it does have a certain logic to it: they're likely to offer admission to the applicants that are in the sweet spot of being both qualified but also not likely to decline the offer.

lasmith reacted to BioCook in paying for grad school
From what I've heard at school visits and interview days from current students, it's possible to work while in school, whether that's a small on-campus coffee shop, research, or TA. It's not for everyone, of course, and it's common for people to work at first and then cut down on hours towards the end of the semester. One tip I've gotten was to take local babysitting jobs because there can be some built-in time for homework if the kids are asleep, etc.
I totally feel you re: paying for school. I'm really crossing my fingers for some scholarships...

I thanked the 2 faculty members that interviewed me as well as the director who coordinated the interview (it was incredibly organized and informative). I also thanked the two speakers from the information session and a faculty member who I did not interview with but toured her lab and was very impressed ( I did related research in undergrad and recognized how advanced her lab was). I received really kind responses from all of the faculty I emailed and later was accepted into the program! It definitely gets your name out there one last time as well as demonstrates sincere interest in the program! Also, receiving a kind reply really eased my nerves!
This was one of the emails I sent to my interviewers:
    Dr. X,
Thank you for taking the time to meet with me Friday to discuss my strong interest in the Masters of Speech and Language Pathology program at X school . I enjoyed learning about the medical focus that makes X a truly unique program and the importance of research that molds students into confident, knowledgeable, and evidence based clinicians. Our conversation further strengthened my passion for being a member of X’s upcoming cohort. It was wonderful to chat about our shared interest in Augmentative and Alternative Communication and I am ecstatic to know that X is a place where that passion will be nurtured. The organization and thoughtfulness of the interview day reinforced my appreciation for X’s program and is a clear indicator of the phenomenal support students in your program receive.
Thank you again for your consideration and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

I definitely don't think all of that is necessary in every thank you but these were my genuine feelings about the program (it was my top pick and a total reach school). Just a few sentences is totally fine too! Just be genuine

After graduating with my undergrad, I immediately applied for grad school I didn't get in and was devastated. I decided to become an SLPA and gain work experience. Many SLPAs at the private practice where I work have tried really hard to get into grad school, some have tried for 5+ years. When I applied this round my supervisor told me she recently wrote over 4 LOR for other people and they didn't get in. I felt defeated from the moment I started applying and not to mention my GRE scores didn't match my studying. Fast forward to a few weeks after I applied to my last school...I got an email that I got in. The pressure is over!
    Congrats to everyone!

This may be cheesy but I don't think people who aren't in the field know what an accomplishment it really is to get in to a program!! For years I've been scared of not getting in anywhere because of everyone in my classes always talking about how competitive it is. And waiting for so long after submitting apps was awful!! It's a huge relief to have acceptances and I'm really happy!! I feel like people don't hear it enough but getting accepted is a big deal and I'm proud of all my fellow speeches!! I'm proud of myself and proud of everyone that has had acceptances and will in the near future!!  We did it!! And good luck to everyone as more schools send out their decisions!! ❤️

I'm so happy for you!!! I'm from out of field and deciding to do a post-bacc year was a huge financial risk. I went through academic hell last semester and worked a part time job. When I got my first acceptance recently, I felt so unbelievably relieved and happy that I cried! It's my proudest accomplishment. Yay to everyone who has gotten accepted so far! Good luck in grad school!

It could have just been my advisor. California State Universities have lower tuition than most out of state programs. I was thinking of applying to East Coast schools where I used to live but out of state cost plus living expenses, and airfare made it more expensive. Also, he mentioned when you finish your Master's program in another state you will be licensed for that state but if you wanted to practice and work in California its better to graduate from a school in California than for example, Florida. Please ask your advisor or Master's Program for what their policies are so you are well informed to make your decision.
Here is an ASHA link I found with some information about state-by-state licensing: https://www.asha.org/advocacy/state/StateTeacherCredentialingRequirements/

I was there. I got rejected by one school and waitlisted by 7.
Something that helped me was remembering that people also typically applied to multiple schools like I did. That being said, there are likely multiple people who applied and got accepted over me to multiple schools. Just keep the faith! No matter what now that you applied to schools that are "way out of your league" and some that are not, you can say you tried and will never have that "what if" feeling. There is still plenty of time! I know it can be nerve-racking but just believe in yourself and focus on things that make you happy right now! Why worry excessively about what you can't control?? Good luck!!
