Yes!  I had a great visit to Yale but, get this—I am still strongly considering Rice! That's a big decision, so I've got lots of phone calls to make and emails to write before I'm comfortable pulling the trigger either way. (Of course, I haven't even been admitted to Rice, so doing my best not to jinx anything here).
You were there during my visit, so you definitely got a sense of how happy I was and how much I fit in with just about everyone I talked to. This is definitely where Rice has a leg up on Yale, where the overall atmosphere was a little stuffier and more self-important than I'd prefer. Although of course that doesn't apply to everyone I met, and some of the professors I talked to were really warm, honest and helpful. And their work is really exciting, and meshed well with my own interests.
My academic and academia-adjacent friends and mentors are going to get a lot of questions from me in the next couple of days, to be sure.

Will probably be Texas (Austin). I did my undergrad at Texas, but there's been a significant time gap. So now I will Texas my Texas again in Texas.

@dilby I got, and still get, a lot of vicarious excitement and happiness from your Yale news.

Had to visit UT early due to a conflict during the official weekend.
Sitting in the airport waiting for my flight home, but I wanted to tell y’all that:
While i was visiting, there was a grad student conference called Fugitive Futures: Graduate Students of Color Un-settling the University and SAIDIYA HARTMAN was the keynote. I only got to peep in for a panel or so, but for all my Poco and “Ethnic” Lit people, just wanted to tell you that that happened (just bc i had no idea prior and thought it was pretty cool)!

Dusting off my GradCafe account to offer perspectives/hellos to any prospective folks with questions about the program. I'm a second year studying 19th c. women's writing, poetics, and disability theory (just about to wrap up coursework!) Otherwise--congrats, and see you in March!!

Just wanted to register with both of you two as another member of the UVA mystery gang. I would have assumed it was an invisible waitlist if somebody hadn’t already said they called UVA and been informed that they had notified everyone on the waitlist....on the other hand, there are no UVA waitlists on the board, so who knows what delightful game they are playing.

Teaching at the high school level. I am in my 5th year teaching now.  I knew I wanted an advanced degree when I started getting my teaching certificate, but my spouse beat me to the punch and went and got himself accepted at a 4 year pharmacy program. In the meantime I have taught all levels - remediation, "regular," and pre-AP/AP/honors. If I can't land a TT job in my home state I would honestly be happy teaching HS until I retire. I would still pursue research projects and/or attend conferences, and you can still publish as an independent scholar.

That’s really cool. I was homeschooled from third grade on so even being in a HS environment seems totally foreign to me, but I know a ton of people who love it. I think there’s something especially lovely about people with real passion for lit sharing it with young folks who don’t necessarily know where their interests are at yet. You probably have a lot more potential to impact lives in a big way. And like you said you can still present and publish!
