These are questions that the graduate faculty there would likely be happy to answer—it would also get your name in their heads and show you might have an above-average interest in that program. And that goes for anyone asking these things about specific universities’ programs.
You can also check out their current students below, although these pages are sometimes not up to date. It is helpful to look at current and past students of a program, to gauge where you might fit in, but you can also of course possibly find people to connect with about the program.

in all my research and all my conversations with people, its emphasized that its quality over quantity. if adding the extra work will weaken the portfolio bc the additions are not strong enough, I wouldn't do it

Seems clear. Pulled from their MFA application instructions page.
”Step 3: Submit your official transcripts & test scores
    Transcripts
Unofficial transcripts from all post-secondary institutions should be uploaded with your electronic application and may be used for departmental admission review purposes.
If offered admission, you will be directed and required to submit to the VCU Admissions Office an official transcript from any institution from which a degree has been awarded to finalize your admission. Transcripts are considered official if they are sent to VCU directly from the issuing institution.”

In my MFA program, we don’t even take studio classes. The majority of the credits are independent study, with the general sentiment being that you should already know how to make the work/learn any necessary new skills on your own. Is that not the norm?

Look up artists you like and other successful artists—read their statements and see how they talk about their work. Figure out where you fit in and whose work you align with, then go from there.

You could also look up alumni from your choice schools and find their statements. This is easy enough since most artists have their artist statement on their website, not that this is totally necessary though.

If you want east coast with good funding, there is also University of Delaware and I think UMD.

If a college closes, it looks like you can get your transcript through the Department of Higher Education in the state that the school was located in. Outside of the US, perhaps there is something similar where your school was?
I would guess the main value lost is in your alumni network ceasing to expand, but that is a minor issue. You still have all of the knowledge and experience from your time there.
What kind of jobs are you looking for? I doubt they will ever ask for a transcript.

Wholeheartedly agree. From the conversations I have been having with my professors from undergrad and at work (I work at an art museum), it seems like things are shifting and in a positive way. MICA is going through a lot of changes to make their programs more interdisciplinary but also to make an effort to recruit students that are interested in more than just making their own work and getting it to a gallery. NYC galleries are not the only places were art lives, nor necessarily where good art lives. There are museums and there are other cities, there is teaching and research and curatorial studies.

I agree that art is very self directed and that MFAs wont teach you how to be an artist. I also think the whole idea of being a suffering artist who will perish for their craft and accept nothing else other than that is silly but also a little privileged. I am an international student and had a full ride for undergrad. The only reason why I had a job for the past year is because I sunk myself into credit card debt in order to take an unpaid internship where I currently work. It kinda angers me when schools like Yale talk about liking to see people reapplying because that is not an option for everyone. This shit is expensive. Most of us can't afford to have jobs out of college that actually will add to our practice/application. The truth is that I will end up going to whatever school takes me this year, because otherwise it's a year of doing nothing in my home country where there is an economic crisis and the arts are basically dead. My friends live here, my boyfriend lives here, and I am a whole ass person in addition to being an artist. These are two very formative years, but I hate the way they are portrayed for MFAs. My friends getting PHDs dont get shit for being very upfront about personal reasons why a lesser ranked school is better for them as a person. Idk. Just trying to not idealize the starving New York artist (that is rarely ever starving bc their parents give them pocket money which GOOD FOR YOU, but know that is a privilege).

On the website for 2021 it says:
Applicants in Painting/Printmaking should submit no more than four artworks and four drawings, studies, graphic works, or videos (these are not required to be pieces that were in your application portfolio). For 2021 applicants should prepare a PDF of these works and provide them to the admissions committee.
Applicants in Photography prepare a portfolio of no more than 20 un-matted photographic proofs which are no larger than 20 X 24 inches each.
Applicants in Sculpture prepare digital files that document the individual’s latest work as well as additional images representing earlier work. Additional documentation to the work in your preliminary portfolio may be brought to your interview (include with portfolio images on a thumb drive for your presentation). Please do not bring any objects for your presentation as the process of setting up takes away from interview time.

I had an interview for Tyler painting. The entire faculty was present and they asked basic questions as @kiddroy said. They also asked questions like “How are you conveying your ideas in your work?”, “What is the purpose of using ~(material)?”, “Can you tell us more about ~(a sentence in the statement of purpose/artist statement)”, “What have you been doing after you got your bfa?”. I hope this helps a little.

Anyone know of MFA programs accepting a smaller cohort this year? (Whether it be due to decreased funding or giving their current cohort an extra year of funding.)

UT Austin is accepting a smaller cohort because their 2020-2021 cohort is staying a third year, due to the pandemic.
Yale is also taking a smaller cohort but I am not sure if it is because of deferrals.
I know this form talking to to people who are in the programs.

Regarding this question, this article in Artsy (https://www.artsy.net/article/artsy-editorial-7-tips-applying-art-school-top-admissions-officers) has a portion where they interview Carrie Moyer, the head of the MFA department at Hunter. Regarding the portfolio, she mentions: “I’m interested in seeing slides that show a person’s ability to grow,” said Moyer. “One of the mistakes that potential students often make is they give you 10 to 15 images of the same body of work. That’s not as interesting as having the person demonstrate that they had a few different ideas, and how those things have become manifest. It’s really important to show that you have an intellectual flexibility around where the ideas will go.”
Also for the statement portion of the Hunter, Carrie states that: Moyer noted that she wants to learn from the essay why the applicant has chosen art as a means of expressing their ideas. “We are living in a world where there are so many artists, so knowing what the impetus is is really important,” she explained.
I'm applying to Hunter this year as well. I got in last year but didn't go. They allowed a deferment to Spring 2021, but I declined that as well due to Covid. I have interviewed with several professors and with Carrie twice. I'd be happy to answer any questions people have. Hunter is generally looking for older people, or people who have experience "in the real world" as Carrie said. One mistake I made the first year I applied was mentioning that I wanted to teach or get into the art education field as well. Carrie doesn't like that as a reason for pursuing an MFA.

Have you been making lots of work? Does your practice have a conceptual background? Do you know where you sit within your medium(s) history and the current discussions going on in the art world? That’s probably a lot more important than recently showing it in galleries, plus your other experiences should help.
