What up people.  I was accepted to the University of Maryland's MFA program last go around and have been there for the better part of 1 semester.
    Pros:
$18,000 total stipend with fellowship, TUITION IS FREE!!! Cool folks in the cohort right now, 10 total for all three years.

    Cons:
this part of the united states sucks ass, but also that could just be my perspective.  You need a car if u wanna hit up Baltimore...DC seems hella stiff. Rent is about 650-1000 a month out here
As a brown dude from Texas I'm real disappointed with the lack of diversity in the program, it's just me n another grad out of 10 who are POC.  Also I've had some wack interactions with 2 faculty, that said there are some dope ass faculty and humans here.
That said...if youre committed to ur studio practice and have a good self care routine, you'll do good out here.  Feel free to reach out if u have any questions

That’s a lot of money and totally a personal call. If you do wait for next year, definitely consider applying to fully/well-funded programs. But also weigh whether you want to go through another application process/if you really want to get started. Personally, I had no interest in going into debt for an MFA, so I only applied to a well funded program. I think it is somewhat crazy to go into a ton of debt for an MFA—it’s not like we are going to be raking in the dough afterwards.

Personally, I would go with the free school unless their program seems super bad, which I would doubt since why would you apply there in the first place?  Then again, if the debt-burden school is in an area you plan to stay and build a career in, then you do have a tough decision ahead of you. Of course, this depends on the amount of debt... $20k or so is manageable to me if the program is that much better. Any higher and I would have to consider whether it is really worth it. Just my two cents. Good luck.

Waitlisted at Sam Fox/WashU (extremely flattering for me!) so champing at the bit there, crossing fingers and toes etc.
Still waiting to hear from Pratt (Integrated Practices).
Trying many methods to distract myself...

Hang in there! This process sucks! I was SO relieved when I got my acceptance! The weight instantly gets lifted...

edit: It helped me a lot to keep making work.

    Hey, thanks for your input.
I just looked at some people applying for Graphic Design at Parsons and this was the only course I found on their website and was wondering about the same. I had initially thought of applying to it since I'm an undergraduate in Architecture and only have work experience regarding graphic design but then MFA seemed better for me and I'm lucky to have recieved a few offers from the same. I also wanted to clear my perception, that it was a technical program to develop one's portfolio for professional/further master's career.
This clears my confusion.  Also, thanks for the edit!

?? It is an associates degree. It shouldn’t even be an option if you are applying for MFA programs. While I don’t know that program specifically, it is probably all intro courses to Adobe programs, drawing, color theory, and other fundamentals. It being an AAS instead of AFA means it is likely more technical than fine art driven.
Edit: Also, that program is now called Communication Design (still an AAS).

People on here have heard from all of those schools if I am not mistaken—definitely at least RISD and MICA if you look through old pages of this thread.

I read this on the reddit /r/gradadmissions sub and it really helped my perspective - from the chair of an admissions committee

I accepted UT Austin's offer yesterday. Really excited about the program's atmosphere, facilities, faculty, current, and incoming grad cohort.
While there, I had a feeling 1-2 accepted people were looking for something different and might reject their offers.

I had my first interview with Cranbrook on beginning of  February. And I got invited for the second interview on mid February! I'm sorry I feel too shy to post my portfolio

It is not always about skill, experience, portfolio, statement, how well you interviewed, or any combination of the above. Sometimes they just need someone different to balance out the cohort. Congrats on SMFA!

Yes! None of us should be going into crazy debt for an MFA, and congrats on the full ride at Penn State!

My MFA philosophy is to not consider going into debt unless it’s Yale.

I’ve heard over and over again, do NOT pay for grad school. It’s not worth it. Teaching jobs are increasingly difficult to come by after school anyways, having a mountain of debt to add to that stress is gonna suck really bad. Just my two cents?

This is precisely what I have heard repeatedly (often from people who did take out tons of loans). MFAs have a high philosophical/personal/societal ROI but not a high financial ROI (typically). My goal was to put myself in a position to have a better practice and possibly teach without worrying about a mountain of debt I'll never pay off.

Long - I have many thoughts. This is what worked best for me, and what I need/want out of my practice. May not be what you're looking for/thinking about.
I wasn't going to grad school this year if I had to go more than 10-20k in debt. I mean realistically - if you take out 60-70k in student loans, have a 10 year repayment plan, and have an interest rate of 6% you're looking at over $700 as your monthly student debt payment. That's a lot!!!!!
The best program, in my opinion, is a program that allows your work to grow to the fullest, including after you graduate. A program that puts you in debt would be counterproductive in that regard. You won't be able to make good work if you're constantly strapped for cash. Especially as creatives, we sometimes need to spend money on supplies and space in order to work. I know that having enormous student loan payments would only hurt my outcomes post-graduation.
For the school you're getting more funding from: Do the faculty have connections with people and in cities you want to work with/in? If so, then prestige won't necessarily facilitate more connections for you unless you really want to get on that #uppertierlife. Do the alumni have outcomes that mirror what you want in your practice? If so, then that's great! Do you want to teach after grad school? TA experience I am sure will put you somewhat ahead of MFA's who do not have teaching experience.
Just some things to think about, which I also thought about heavily. I am not sure where Penn State falls on the prestige scale, but I am endlessly grateful for the fact I will not have any debt, which will give me more freedom when I graduate to do whatever the heck I want. Personally, I think prestige without funding is unethical and overrated because increased student loan burden contributes to achievement disparity in the arts based on income/background. So I am obviously somewhat biased.

I think most people are paying that if not more. Yes, some programs are cheaper/free, but $44k isn’t really so bad in the grand scheme of things. Sure, less/free is better, but you also have to consider if you would want to do another round of applications/year of waiting.

Congrats! I am still waiting to hear from several schools and I need to figure out financial aid because I do not have a penny in savings to cover the remaining tuition + housing in Boston (I have 2 dogs so a roommate situation isn’t ideal for me, but even tiny studios in Boston are very expensive). But of my remaining schools to hear from, SMFA is definitely at the top so I’m determined to find a way to do it.
If we both end up in Boston we should meet up!
