Aithera got a reaction from Strategos in 2020 application thread
    For anyone applying to Pitt:
Decisions should be out sometime next week. Info I got was that committee is meeting this week, and then decisions will go to grad dean and be sent out, which means next week.
Also, Pitt saw something a 50% increase in apps this year. So if you are rejected or waitlisted, know it may have just been the class of apps they received.
Lastly, no Rediker does not really take students anymore.

I’m a current Pitt grad student, so if anyone has questions, I’m happy to answer to the best of my ability

After reading through all 23 pages, I think I've managed to compile the most salient (at least for me) and still relevant pieces of advice as far as grad school supplies
Laptop - While most people have a laptop, it was recommended by several people that folks in a new laptop (unless yours is less than two years old) and make sure you get an extended warranty (one that will hopefully last the entirety of your program).  Note: look into funding opportunities for laptops within your department. Some will finance a new laptop for incoming grad students!  Desk - L-shaped came highly recommended, given the extra space. While i love my little desk, I may invest in a larger one by year 2.  Chair (Desk) - Investing in a good chair was stressed many times. You will likely be spending many hours hunched over a desk. get one that will be comfortable for your back, but won't put you to sleep.  Chair (Reading) - a separate reading chair was recommended for those hours upon hours where you'll be reading. a comfortable chair or couch was recommended. Printer - there was some debate regarding the pros/cons of a printer. In an increasingly digital age, I don't think a printer is completely necessary. ESPECIALLY because so many universities have printers available and printing costs included within stipends. But this will depend on the person Scanner OR File Cabinet - One person had recommended getting a file cabinet and regularly organizing it so as not to fall behind (if you are someone who likes having physical copies of everything, then go for this option). HOWEVER, someone then chimed in to say screw a file cabinet. just get a scanner. and i thought that was an excellent idea! just scan everything you need and chuck the physical copies (unless its like your birth certificate or something)  Coffee - Coffee maker, coffee carafe (to keep it warm for those days of marathon working), french press. you get the idea. ALTERNATIVE: electric kettle for tea drinkers  Large Water Bottle - lets be sustainable folks!  Snacks - for those long days  Wall Calendar  Dry Erase Board  Noise Cancelling Headphones  External Hard Drive Dongles - actually didn't see folks write about this, so I'm adding it! Dongles/adapters are constantly changing based on your device. Get the one that is specific to your computer to HDMI and VGA, and you should be set for most campus systems!  Paper shredder - unless your campus has a shredding removal service like my current one has. I'd say take advantage of that Travel - Luggage, toiletry bag, international travel adapter/converter, etc. You will presumably be traveling a bunch! Get the right travel accessories if you can Desk accessories - post its, highlighters, pens Notebooks - it seems like everyone has been unanimously pro-moleskine notebooks on here. mmmm I'm not! What *EYE* recommend is going to your local art supply store, and buying sketchbooks from there. They are usually so much cheaper. And most art stores have artist and student memberships available, so you can get major discounts. I just showed a sale and got all my notebooks and pens for less than $30. Just my opinion  Software - Just some of the software that came highly recommended and that I felt like was still relevant today: Evernote. Zotero. Scrivener. CamScanner. Nuance. iStudiez  Most of this is hella obvious. But some of these I hadn't even considered! And its nice to think about these things early so you have enough time to save up or search the internet for deals. I curated an Amazon wishlist based on the information i listed above. Let me know if you'd like me to post it here and make public!
And remember: 90% (if not all) of this is OPTIONAL. Let's not make academia seem more inaccessible than it already is. You will excel regardless of whether or not you have these things.  There's always borrowing. lending programs through your university. free services through your libraries. There are options!
Hope this is helpful to those reading this post 8 years later! It was certainly helpful for me. Aside from curating a great list of things i want, it also helped distract me from decisions this week ://////

My assumed rejection from Toronto was wrong! Just got the acceptance email. No funding, though.

I can't speak for physics, but there are no programs in History that have spring admissions and are worth attending.

I'm actually not entirely sure but I would ask if you can be put in touch with current MA students, who will have a better idea. Just from the website there's this (below)--that might be how students are funding themselves--though the website does seem a little incorrect to me (even with an MA we're all funded for 5 years for the phd, for instance).
"The Graduate School’s Tuition Incentive Program (TIP) encourages students to apply for external grants and provides matching tuition points (from 50 to 100 percent) to eligible recipients of external awards from recognized, academic sources of funding outside NYU.  For applications and specific details about TIP eligibility criteria, please visitwww.nyu.edu/gsas/Admissions/tipform.html.  New York University offers several loan programs to students.  Information is available at www.nyu.edu/financial.aid or at the Office of Financial Aid, 212-998-4444.
The GSAS/CAS Tuition Program: Qualified CAS students graduating in 2009 or later who complete the admissions application process and are admitted to the master's programs in History (World History, Archives and Public History, or History of Women and Gender), as well as the BA/MA program, in the term immediately following the year of their graduation from CAS, will be eligible to receive a 25% tuition discount for courses required for the degree program."

That NYU rejection really got me.
I was prepared to be rejected, but when I opened the decision and saw "we are pleased to inform you..." I got so excited before reading "admission to the Master's program in world history." Sorry, but I don't have $60k to spend. That's kinda a big reason why I applied directly for PhD programs...

Thank you, it really did go well! I'm still a little jet lagged and it hasn't really sunk in yet, but I am genuinely thrilled. Duke is definitely the best possible place for me to get my PhD.

If you want to do a 1 year MA without a gap year after, you're asking your new MA profs to write for you after they've know you for maybe 6 weeks.

If you want to come out of a 1 year MA with a stronger application, plan on applying the following year.

I also just realized that doing a one year Masters would pretty much be throwing me back into the PhD application cycle right away, which isn't something that I want to do right now, especially given that my interests are changing. I'm going to go to 'Nova, though the bragging rights for my non-academic family members and friends is really nice!

From what I've heard there's nothing wrong with getting your MA and BA at the same institution (especially since there are many combined BA/MA programs now) and nothing wrong with getting your PhD and MA from the same institution (since the traditional path for academics is going to a combined MA/PhD program).
What you don't want is your BA, MA, and PhD from the same institution because that indicates less academic diversity. I think the OP about this topic was talking about the possibility of getting their MA and PhD from the same institution as their BA.

I was honestly incredibly worried that it might be a bad idea to get my Masters at the same place I got my Bachelors, so her response was almost relieving in that it confirmed what I had already thought (and solidified my choice!).

Don't count your Texas chickens just yet. I was told by a current TX Ph.D. student that some profs want to meet/interview students before offering admission and some don't care to. So it isn't necessarily a bad sign if you weren't invited to the interview weekend.

Hi, bitter grad student here to implore you to ask about sixth-year funding on your visiting weekends. Don’t accept vague reassurances along the lines of “well, sixth-year students often find their way to getting funding somehow.” Get a clear answer. Talk to advanced grad students and read the student newspaper/union newsletter if you have to. And treat periods of “austerity” at universities with the utmost seriousness.

Got my first waitlist from Loyola Chicago. Honestly, not sure if I would accept if I was being accepted, given the fact that they're not a ranked program and they're primarily an American history school.

    Hey guys,
I'm a third-year in a PhD program and I lurk on these forums every year...
Quick advice - as you turn down offers, please remember that if you've done your legwork properly, these are probably big names in your field that you will continue to see and cite for years to come. I turned down an offer three years ago and continue to email that professor regularly. In fact, she reviewed my comps list for me!
All this is to say, please keep in mind that academia is a small small world. If you liked these people enough to apply to work with them, you probably want to be able to come back to them over the years.

Good luck to everyone! You're almost there!

I meant to post this earlier, but I got the notification while on my way to see Hamilton.... I got my second acceptance! I was accepted into the MA to PhD program in American history at SLU. I emailed the program director to see if a switch into the early modern history program was possible and will probably ask my current faculty mentor (who does some very interesting work) about possibly working with me for a masters.
I honestly didn't expect to have to weigh two options, but I'm so glad I have to!

Congratulations on being admitted to Yale.
I recommend that you dial down your apparent contempt for Harvard unless you're absolutely sure you're not going to be interacting with academics who went there or were taught or mentored or supported by those who did. The Ivory Tower is a much smaller place with much thinner walls than one would think.
