mediumatcha got a reaction from alwaysapplying in Applications 2019
For the record, I was not being arrogant. Since I have already accepted an offer from another program and many universities have a literal "withdraw application" button on their portals, one might understand the well-intentioned nature of inquiring about taking my name out of the hat.

Finally got some good news: I was admitted to Central European University's MA program in Late Antique, Medieval, and Renaissance Studies with a full tuition waiver, so it looks like I'll be in Vienna for the next two years. After a 4 month slog of non-stop disappointment, it's nice to end my season with some good news.

mediumatcha reacted to dr. t in Which languages should I focus the most on?
As everyone, from your professors to the adcoms to the posters on this board, has been telling you over and over again, you don't need flexibility. You need focus. If you were actually ready for this next step, you wouldn't be asking us which languages to take. You would know.
An MA on the way to a PhD is a time to refine your area of study, not discover it. You have extremely limited time and need to hit the ground running; many of the people you will be competing against started their language training in middle school. At the very least, at this point you need to be able to articulate a time period, a geographic region, and a structural approach (e.g. I want to study the south of France during the central middle ages through the lens of postcolonial theory). How else are you supposed to pick what to take?
You come across as interested in the idea of having a PhD rather than any particular subject of study. Nothing you've said instills confidence that you've even begun to plan to fix this. Unless you do, your next application cycle will go no better than your last. I would strongly suggest you take @TMP's advice, look into your deferral options, and spend some time meditating on your own motivations and desires..

I've never heard of any school reimbursing you for the amount of money you spent on the GRE. I would advise against asking for reimbursement as this is not something that is typically seen as eligible for reimbursement purposes.

If you're crafty at all, it could be nice to make them a small gift. For two of my LOR writters, I knit them hats.

Texas rejections are in. Obviously quite the disappointing application cycle, but you know what? I am in Disneyland. So for the next little bit, I am going to celebrate that I applied, got rejected, and still want to apply again next go-around. Happy weekend everyone!

I wait until they tell me to call them by their first name explicitly OR if they sign their emails with just their first name. (If they sign with their initials, I still call them Dr. So-and-so.)

Are you crazy to turn down a cash cow program that looks great on paper, but may not provide you the resources to become the scholar you want to become?
Unless you're independently wealthy, there's no persuasive reason to take it.

btw did you consider applying to NYU, as an Africanist? There's Julie Livingston, Michael Gomez, Robyn D'Avignon, amongst others--all big names with good records of placing students.

Hi--40 here. I'm also a lawyer. Finished a masters in history last year. Accepted to 1 PhD program this year, on the waitlist at two others. No rejections yet. You're only too old if you're more worried about security than about doing what you really want to do with the rest of your life--which hopefully will be long and fruitful.

Short answer: Yes! Longer Answer: I have lived in Berkeley for only about a month and a half last summer, but from what I remember, there was always something happening somewhere in Berkeley/Oakland/SF.

I’m not sure if I mentioned that I was also flying from Australia to the east coast—there are often (at schools like these) weird pockets of secret money that only appear when you ask if they exist. I’d just ask, visits are crucial.

I declined admission to Rutgers PhD in African-American History. I received a very positive response from my POI-- wishing me luck at the program of my choice, suggesting a history association to join, and hope to work together in the future. I am waiting on NYU (same field) because I'm not sure if I should preemptively withdraw.

Sorry--wasn't meant as a personal dig. Every time I apply for anything I spend months on the verge of sending a stream of emails all to the effect of, "ACTUALLY DON'T WORRY GUYS I'LL TRY AGAIN NEXT YEAR".

I just emailed the DGS of the program I was admitted to and let them know I wasn't accepting the offer. I would recommend that you do the same. Probably sooner rather than later. People on wait lists would appreciate it.

There's been a couple more now, seems legit. I saw them and instantly thought of you -- it took me a couple moments to remember I'm waiting to hear from Cornell too, looks like I'm more invested in your application than my own lol.
They've been notified by email, so there's still hope. Rooting for you!
