    Not OP, but from my experience this is also true. I'm a transplant to political science out of philosophy because of the paucity of research and opportunities for political philosophers in philosophy departments proper. I've had plenty of contact with the philosophy department both at my undergrad university and others close by, and spent a fair bit of time researching philosophy PhDs before making the switch to political science, and political philosophy 100% fell by the wayside. I've found a few exceptions, though: (1) if the department is more continental you're more likely to have a range of political philosophy, and (2) you'll probably at least get social contract and Rawls in the analytic departments I've encountered. It's also a lot easier to run a couple political philosophy courses for undergrads (everyone can teach Rawls) than it is to develop a robust political philosophy faculty who consistently does great research.
    But certainly since the vast majority of American schools skew analytic in their philosophy departments, you'd be hard up doing your PhD in philosophy on political issues. Obviously this is department-dependent (e.g. if you're at Chicago hanging out with Nussbaum and Pippin you're obviously have a lot of options), but places like Chicago seemed to be an exception when I was looking prior to my MA.

    Quick reminder that there are many people in your situation - myself included (0/5). This forum can skew perception in a lot of ways, but if Cornell had 325 applicants (per the rejection letter) there are >300 people on the sideline at that school. Sometimes it just goes that way, friend, and whatever happens, happens. Best of luck figuring out a way forward

    "they sent out the first round funding offer last week"
    - I got this info from the gradcafe result page and my friend who got the U of T offer
    "they have two weeks to recline/accept"
    - I got this info from my friend's this-year offer letter and previous personal offer info
    "U of T will decide ... response."
    - I got his info from the gradcafe thread and previous communication with UofT regarding the offer of previous year
    Hope it helps.

    Can also anecdotally confirm @DefeatistElitist's post. Montreal is the most affordable city (also a wonderful city to spend a few years in too, FWIW). I have friends paying $800-900 Canadian for a 1 1/2 bedroom that's fairly central. It's also worth looking at how much you'll pay in taxes if you're an international student - I know Canadians studying in the US get dinged, so that may or may not be a factor for you as well.

    As far as online sources are concerned I'm not sure, but I can tell you that the cost of living in Montreal is WAY cheaper than most comparably sized North American cities. I know this is anecdotal but a good friend of mine lives in a nice one-bedroom probably 3 metro stops from McGill and pays $750/month (Canadian, ~$550 US). That is probably cheaper than most you'll find but honestly not by much. Transit is also reasonably cheap in Montreal and is very reliable.

    Quebec has VERY high taxes though (scholarships aren't taxed in Canada though), sales tax is like 18%. Generally speaking though, Montreal is by a large margin the most affordable major city in Canada. It's also a wonderful, incredibly fun city with A+ food.

    (1) Eat well beforehand. When they throw you into the funding Hunger Games, you won't have to start by scrounging for food like the rest of the tributes;
    (2) Prepare basic survival skills, ideally learning how to craft a weapon from a copy of A Theory of Justice and transcript photocopies;
    (3) Cozy up with administrators - they are most likely to parachute you live-saving tools during the fight;
    (4) Never ask about what happened to last year's incoming class.
    Good luck.

    I emailed the UofT coordinator asking about an estimate for when I should expect an answer. This is what he said, hope it helps:
    ”I believe the first set of PhD offers are supposed to go out soon – I believe as early as today, but more than likely either Mondayor Tuesday of next week.  Note that it is a rolling process – we send out offers, and if any of them are turned down, we then move to the next person on the list.  It’s ongoing until all the spots are filled – so if you don’t receive an offer in the first set, it doesn’t necessarily mean you will not be receiving at offer at all.”

    Sorry, long time lurker here who just made an account, because I am one of those people who wrote 'uk grads'...
    It wasn't a long-pondered decision, I did so because I:
    1.) saw many people wrote something along the lines of 'Canadian MA / LSE master's / Hong Kong top 3'
    2.) genuinely thought this would be more helpful for future applicants to get an idea of the program make-up, however biased the sample may be, as we can then have more granular data than just 'A/U/I'
    3.) thought it may encourage future undergraduates from the UK and beyond to directly apply for US programs. The level of information over here is even lower. Most faculty members and students here thought a master's is a necessary condition for entry.  I definitely wouldn't have even tried without some strong encouragement and reading this forum, which helped me to understand the American system in countless ways

    Ok so I have a question that I'm sure has come up before, in the context of the "uk grad" additions to results. I have a Canadian undergrad and a Canadian MA on the way - I know that that put me at an immediate disadvantage for my R1 applications. Are there any uk grads here who want to explain why they qualify all the results, and anyone at all who could explain the relationship between UK universities and prospects in the US? I'm familiar enough with the Canadian context, but I'm out to sea on this one.

    Okay, it got worse (the DGS replied and told me the admin could answer, and then the admin replied to the DGS's email with me cc'ed saying she'd already answered my question to a separate email).
    The real issue is that I don't have a Plan B that I'm happy about. I have a lot of ideas for crappy ways I could survive for a year while I retake the GRE and reapply next year, but I don't want to do any of those things. I guess the best thing for me to do is to spend the next two weeks searching for and applying to jobs I'd be really excited to do. That can be my Plan B. Then, if I strike out with my last PhD application in the next two weeks, I can move on to Plan C, which is applying to jobs I don't want but am reasonably sure I can get. Plan D would be to take literally any job in a city where I'd want to live, and Plan E would be to take literally any job, literally anywhere. Plan F would be to go live with the mole people who live in the abandoned subway tunnels in NYC, although I've heard it's extremely dangerous down there. I hope it doesn't come to that.
    (In case it's not clear -- yes I'm trying to be funny and am not being 100% serious, but the feeling of anxiety over where I am and what I'm going to do is real)

    Claiming a Yale rejection! Also got a generic email to check portal. Generic emails are the best. If you haven't gotten the email yet go log in obsessively until you're notified.
