Sorry I totally meant to include a reply to your dilemma, but it sounds like almost everything is held equal, such as your relationship with the POIs, your research interest at either school. I've gone through a MA already, and I've been screwed over by lack of care and attention from my ex-POI, which ultimately ended in what I call a 'divorce'. If you get a chance, I'd ask the grad students about their experiences, and trust me, if there were any red flags they wouldn't hesitate to tell you. If both supervisors are equally as appealing, then I'd say pick the choice that makes most sense geographically for you, since you mentioned that location is quite key. Hope this is helpful!

CGS-D came out, for those who are waiting. Came up short this time... and probably the end of the road for clinical psych grad school chances this year. Good luck and see some of you next application cycle!

Hi all - long-time lurker here.  I know this is super late in the game but I'm hoping that I could give some people (future applicants) peace of mind. After being initially rejected and waitlisted, I've landed two acceptances!
    Acceptance 1
    School: University of Toronto (OISE)
Concentration: School and Clinical Child Psychology (SCCP)
    Type: MA
Date of acceptance: March 29, 2019
Notified by: Email from both SGS that my status had changed on March 27, 2019, which included an official offer letter and funding; Also was notified by my POI via email the same day
    Note: Was initially rejected
    Acceptance 2
    School: Queen's University
    Concentration: Clinical Psychology
    Type: MSc
Date of acceptance: Unofficially March 29, 2019; Officially April 2, 2019
Notified by: Call from POI on March 29, 2019, and received official offer letter from SGS April 2, 2019
Note: Was originally waitlisted; Secured SSHRC funding
In a bit of a dilemma when it comes to choosing between these two programs, as there is a great research fit at both and I get along well with both POIs. POIs are very similar in many regards. Location is something that is impacting my decision as I currently live in the GTA. I feel bad holding onto a decision longer than I need to but I'm seriously struggling. Any thoughts?

Nope - it's all in one application thankfully. You fill out your proposal, CV, etc. and then select the 3 schools from dropdown lists. For OGS, it's individual to each school so theoretically you could prepare different proposals for each.

Hey, I can't speak to the actual probability --I think a lot of factors are dependent on the cycle you apply are important (e.g. PhD spots). However, I am completing an MSc in Psychiatry and was admitted into a couple of programs directly into PhD. In my case, I was lucky to get some voluntary clinical experience during my MSc that helped me in terms of my CV and personal statement but there was no requirement for practicum hours. If your thesis is clinical, and you make a case for being ready, you have a shot!
The schools will likely advise you to apply at an MA level but indicate that you would like to be considered for direct PhD entry.

Officially accepted my offer for the University of Guelph Child & Adolescent Clinical Psych - super excited to get started in September! I released my offers from UTSC and Waterloo, so good luck to those on the waitlist. Message me for POIs if you're interested.

I was rejected from a program and composed an email saying thanks for the consideration, enjoyed our interview etc.. I was offered a position as a lab coordinator as a result, which was super cool! It's important to try and be remembered if you didn't get accepted and hope to apply again

5/5 down for rejections, who wants to have a misery party? See y'all next cycle
Jokes aside, I'm happy I made it as far as I did, applying to the top POIs at the top schools in Canada straight out of undergrad and still getting a few interviews. My GREs were pretty crap, none of my refs were even clinical psychologists and I had 0 connections to most of my PIs. Gonna take this time to retake GREs, build up my research, and smash the next cycle next year (or just wait two years depending on my job). I said I'd be upfront about rejections, so if you're feeling down about yours, just know everything happens for a reason and now wasn't your time--but next year/two years might be.  LOVE U CANADA THREADDDD

It really depends on what you want to end up doing in terms of clinical practice. Like the others have said, in terms of providing psychotherapy, there may not be huge differences. HOWEVER, if you wanted to do any formal assessment/diagnostic work in your clinical work, you would have to be a C.Psych which means you need to have graduated from a clinical psychology program. Counselling psychologists are not permitted to do any assessment/diagnostic work (unless it's in school psych and you're working with children and doing assessment/diagnosis around learning disabilities and such). Diagnosis of DSM disorders is regulated in Canada and only clinical psychologists and medical doctors are permitted to do this.
There may also be differences in your mode of training. As the others have said, clinical psychology tends to focus on psychopathology. Counselling psychology tends to deal with systems theories and focus on that more so than psychopathology. Accordingly, training in a clinical psychology program may equip you better to work with most clinical populations than counselling psychology programs (which trend to be geared towards working with more problems in adjustments/daily living/relationships).
Yes, research fit is important, but you should also give serious consideration to what your ultimate goal is, because the two degrees, though similar, will get you different end results and opportunities.

Yup! It definitely can happen if you have a master's thesis that is clinically related; although it is rare I would say.
I've been talking to some student who were accepted directly into PhD , and a couple of them came from counselling. I myself am coming from an MSc in Psychiatry and am going directly into PhD for clinical. The one stipulation is that there has to be spots available for PhD which you can't always bank on-- for example, in my case, a PhD student left the clinical program for personal reasons so a spot opened up; otherwise they may reserve all PhD spots for current clinical students at the master's level).
If you are admitted directly into PhD the way it works is you may be spared some electives if you have graduate level courses from your masters, but you will be with the MA1 cohort doing all the core courses (it's possible some of them will overlap with counselling and you will be exempt). As such, you'll likely do 5 years for your PhD instead of 4 as you're catching up (although some crazy cats manage in less)-- ultimately you're still saving time and do not have to redo a master's thesis.
It definitely varies by school in terms of their willingness but what I'm describing is the case for a couple of schools I was accepted to (one in Toronto and one in Montreal).
Hope that helps! Feel free to message me

UTSC - It's really frustrating that no one has gotten REJECTED, to my knowledge. I do know that unofficial offers have been made though... so it could be anytime now that we get SOME sort of news. Seems to be the school with the LEAST amount of information...

I don't imagine you will be declined by SGS. They are probably just taking a while to update the system. I wouldn't worry. Quick question, is this for OISE or UTSC?

From what I read from last year's thread, it is possible where you receive tri-agency funding, but not a school acceptance. In this case, some people have mentioned that it might be worth emailing your POI and letting them know that you received the award... have heard of rare cases where people have been given acceptance after the fact. However, if you do receive the award, your application next year will be extremely convincing for acceptance.

Sorry for sounding like a broken record, but a copy/paste of your POI / scores / any other information you're willing to DM for your UTSC application, would be SUPER APPRECIATED!!
