    Hey y’all!
Returning to my favorite corner of the interwebs to chat preparation for starting grad school this fall. What are y’all doing? I don’t mean strictly school related stuff, perhaps you’re taking the time to hang out with friends and family you’ll be moving away from/read what you want to read/travel, etc. Personally I’m doing most of the above, but I also contacted my future advisor to ask what he’d recommend I do to set myself up for beginning coursework. I’m looking at taking an intro to Spanish course over the summer, and I also got a list of reading to do from Dr. Sae-Saue, which I’ve started on excitedly. Right now I’m reading The Revolt of the Cockroach People and City of Night. What are you all up to?!?!

My work is primarily 20th/21st century American cultures, currently thinking a lot about cultural productions and reproductions of whiteness.
Right now, I'm working on a few different projects. Working with a prof on creating a panel on short fiction engaging race in the "post-bellum pre-Harlem" window. Working on refining/clarifying/revising a paper I have a draft of on Aladdin and Pocahontas as case studies for the reproduction of whiteness, Western values, and Western cultural power (hoping to present it at MAPACA in November, but we'll see). Tentatively, my next research project/summer work will either be an investigation into the spiritualization and racialization what I'm currently calling "kooky sacred grandmothers" in children's animated films, or an exploration of how racial stereotypes operate in American reality TV competitions.
I'll be presenting a Kristevan reading of Chaim Potok's My Name Is Asher Lev focusing on maternity, suffering, and discourse at SCMLA in Little Rock this October. Also will be presenting a Susan Stryker-driven reading of gender roles in Frankenstein at the IGA conference at Lewis University this July!

Will be listing out my current research moodboard I'll also add some other resources. My work is primarily within 20th/21st C American poetics and queer theory. If you want to collab, send me a PM. I'm always looking for more opportunities to explore literary research beyond my field.
Right now, I'm working on multiple projects. My larger project/overarching goal is tied to my SoP, which is the proposal of a queer poetic archive. The very basic aims of this larger project/line of thinking is to examine what happens by studying queer American poetics as a collective and also centering such poets in academic discourse. I especially utilize the term 'archive' as a rhetorical move to document and also contemplate the turn towards the archive in queer and literary study. What does it mean to place poets such as Hart Crane, Elizabeth Bishop, and many others as the primary voices in an archival study? (archival in the literal, literary, and rhetorical sense) And what does it mean to contemplate that a living, active 'queer archive' exists when such a term might very possibly be contradictory? And more importantly, what happens when we place queerness (especially queer poets) in the center of contemplating the archive? (can queerness be archived?) It's a very fluid project atm, but this is the 'what's at stake' behind everything I'm doing.
I'm currently actively researching on Frank Bidart, coming out narratives, the queer lyric, and queer language/queer coding. Additionally, I'll also be presenting on Hart Crane and Wallace Stevens this weekend, a geographical study of the poetics of Key West (Idea of Key West and Key West: An Island Sheaf) and the implications of that location from a post-colonial approach. A possible expansion of the latter project will very possibly involve Elizabeth Bishop.
    A resource I'm looking into:
ONE Archives at USC (if you want to study a queer archive, this is one of the places to go. I believe they offer fellowships too)

I am also looking into presenting either or both at SAMLA and PAMLA this year. SAMLA is currently accepting CFPs rn so if you're down to be in Atlanta, here it is: https://samla.memberclicks.net/samla-90-cfps
PAMLA will be in San Diego this year, check out their page: https://pamla.org/2019
I'll have more specific info once I'm settled into my program. This is just the stuff I've gleaned in my free time while waiting. Hope this helps

Thank you for creating the thread! I think this will be an excellent resource for all. If I can help in anyway, let me know. I have a lot of information on Irish literature, particularly Irish Modernism in regards to opportunities and programs in New England and some beyond.

    Hi all!
Figured I would just go ahead and make the collaboration thread talked about in a few other threads.
This is a space where we can share information/CFPs, reach out for collaboration on papers or projects or panels, share opportunities, etc etc etc. As @kd1990 suggested, this can also be a place where applicants can reach out to current grad students and learn a bit about departments and research.
To kick us off, @Warelin, @kendalldinniene, and I are working on a spreadsheet of creative writing journals! If you're interested in helping out or have info to share, lmk.

Eleventh hour acceptance off the UPenn waitlist on Monday!! Grateful.
When I got the news, I was stranded in O'Hare after having been bumped from four (!) consecutive flights standby following Sunday's surprise snowstorm. I can now cross spending the night in the terminal off my bucket list. Eeks. The moral of the story is that this amazing news almost, almost made O'Hare tolerable.
I forgot my GC pword for a while, but I want to say congrats to everyone--no matter what acceptances/waitlists/rejections you're left holding at the end of the cycle--bc this process is brutal and can be so heartwrecking. Last year at this time, I was bracing for another tenuous year of adjunct teaching. Academia is something, but it is not everything.

Anonymouse124 reacted to feralgrad in D (suddenly) feeling intimidated by "tough" schools
Are you sure she's actually "intimidated"? Because it doesn't sound that way to me. She's not worried it's going to be a hard program, she's worried it will be a poor fit for her. And I think she's right to do so.
It's normal to take classes you hate in undergrad, but this should not be the case for grad school. If you hate 4 of your classes (which is a LOT in a program that only requires 3 courses per semester), then you've picked the wrong program. Each of your daughter's courses should be preparing her for her career -- otherwise you're not spending your money wisely.
I know you're trying to look out for her, but she's probably done way more research on these programs and their alumni outcomes than you. She may still be young, but she's the expert.

Congrats everyone ❤️ We did it!  I’m so glad to have been a part of this community, for all the support, and for all the joy in seeing folks’ dreams come true.
I just know in the future whenever I see some truly incredible thing happening in our field, I’m going to proudly be like hmmmm, I bet there’s a GCer behind that.

Hey there! Happy to share some of the helpful tidbits of advice I received throughout this process ?
Competitiveness - I personally don't have any publications/conferences under my belt but I'm sure another GC'er will be able to speak to this topic. I have been told, however, that applying at least 2-3 weeks before the deadline helps greatly. Not sure how true this is, but at the very least, it ensures all of your paperwork (GRE scores) gets in on time.  Apply to at least two funded MAs (I hear Villanova's is great, I personally applied to Purdue's).  What drew you in to the schools you applied to? Is there a critical mass of professors there for you to work with? I'd suggest sending out emails (I did this the summer before I applied) to profs in your field. I spoke to them about my writing sample and asked to pick their brains about the field and possible programs that would be a good fit. Take a look at the work grad students have recently done at the schools. There's a chance if someone in your respective field is graduating, the ad comm might be interested in accepting another! Finances permitting, I've heard applying to 8 schools is the sweet spot. Also make sure to check for application waivers! I would also suggest starting an Excel spreadsheet for the schools you're applying to with professors you're interested in working with, if they require GRE scores, cost of applications, etc. It's definitely a lifesaver.  I would definitely suggest writing a new WS! I did this the summer after I graduated from college and it was tough. What was helpful was speaking to professors in my field over Skype/Facetime to get their thoughts on sources/theory and having a friend of mine enforce deadlines. The summer was getting away from me and having deadlines (I would actually email my friend formally saying 'Dear Professor X, I have attached the most recent draft of...etc.) really, really helped. Most important point: make sure your WS reflects the interests outlined in your PS! The ad comm wants to see your intellectual evolution and you should show them where you're at!  I freelanced while applying too and I know how tough time management can be. Make time for rest. Read for pleasure. Have family and friends help out with the more tedious parts of an application (opening up accounts on all the portals and filling out info). This is a tough process and having those moments will tide you over.  I've got my fingers and toes crossed for you!!

@hgtvdeathdrive Congrats on making your choice and many, many congrats on Buffalo Poetics Also gonna re-affirm what many others have said here. CoL is one of the most important things to consider and one funding package isn't always equal to another, especially when you consider the local area. There are some schools I considered applying to that were high-flight and were in theory, fantastic, but the fit + the cost of living wasn't there. Buffalo, from what I've seen, has a very, very reasonable CoL. Their base stipend can take you very far.
I'm deeply invested in the study of poetry and Buffalo was one of my top choices this cycle. Some of the work that goes into the poetics program is astounding. In terms of both creative and scholarly output, it's one of the most appealing programs in the Northeast in my eyes. I've seen their class offerings for the upcoming year and I would love to be right in the middle of that discourse, especially under the auspices of Cristanne Miller, Stacy Hubbard, and Steve McCaffery. As far as poetics, it's cutting-edge.
The only reason why I turned Buffalo was because my eventual final choice fit my project/trajectory a bit better, was also a waitlist so nothing was guaranteed, and I don't have the resources to make the move to NY as a Californian (still pretty young so hugely dependent on family).
Either way, many congrats on your final choice!

One of my professors gave me an awesome little precis template to fill out for each title I do for exams. It consists of:
    Title, author, publishing info:
    Topic:
    Main argument:
    Subarguments:
    -
    -
    -
    Sources and methodologies:
    Contributions:
    2-3 quotes:

She encouraged us to try to keep the precis to just one page (Word document) or two max if the work is particularly long or complex. You can keep them all in a file and print them out to play with (review, group together in different ways, think through) to help you prepare to discuss them in the broad survey--ish kind of way you will need to on your exams.

    I hope this helps!!

Has Berkeley really STILL not sent out their rejections? Like c'mon. Last year they went out mid-March - this year are they sending them out ON April 15 or what? I know it's a rejection but I would sure like something definite anyway. I told myself I'd submit my official acceptance once all my rejections were in but apparently that's going to be unreasonable ?

My hands were shaking the whole time, I was so nervous! I even had to rehearse a couple of times with my best friend. I really love the prof and definitely want to work with her in the future so I wanted to make sure my sincerity about staying in contact came through. Time to go take a bath and not think about anything for a week ?
