This waiting is almost worse than waiting to hear whether I was accepted in the first place.

that’s like when I was rejected after interview and in the email they were like “I’m sure you will do well wherever you choose to attend” which is nice except for the part where I definitely mentioned to them at some point during the visit that I didn’t have any other offers

For those who don't know, the Iowa Writer's Workshop is the premier creative writing program in the US. As such, applying there turns people into rabid animals.

Universities aren't always ready to commit to a relationship and like to keep their options open.

He is not embarrassed about his acceptances.  He is embarrassed about other people knowing he failed for the top tier schools. That is pretty reasonable and happens to many.
