Thank you! That was so helpful, I want to apply to San Francisco State and Portland University so that is really good to know! Also congratulations on all your acceptances and your decision

Hi! I completed USU's 2nd Bachelor's program and the schools I was accepted/denied to are listed in my signature. I can't recommend USU's program highly enough! It made more sense to me to get a COMD degree rather than try and complete all of the individual requirements for Cal State schools (although I think some schools like CSUSM still want you to have all of their class equivalents completed regardless of whether you have a degree- hopefully I'm not remembering incorrectly), but I recognize not everyone is able to manage that financially. I had a COMD minor from my first degree, however, so I only had to take 10 classes at USU instead of the usual 12. I also have a friend who is a current SLP in a school district who got a significant pay raise for having a Bachelor's degree in COMD so it was worth it for her to do USU's program in the long run, but I'm not sure whether that's an exception. In regards to the ASHA requirements, usually you'll have to check with the individual program to see if your classes qualify if you're unsure. I hope this is helpful!

I'm pretty sure it depends on the school. My graduate program said it's okay for us to take the ASHA science requirements pass/no pass but I know some of the other programs I applied to asked for a letter grade, so I would check with each individual program you're applying to.

HI!! I actually recommend not deferring DEPENDING ON THE PROGRAM. See if you can find grad students from your program and ask how it's been going for them. If the program is being transparent, has telepractice in place, and was prepared for online learning it can still be an awesome experience and by the time you're in your externships in a year things should either have calmed down or we'll have a new normal that we'll have to adapt to anyway.

I'm a first year and my program is handling things really well. I'm bummed, miserable, and have cried a lot. But telepractice is going well and it is what it is. I say jump in if it works for you.

Oh damn, that sucks. I went to the virtual office hours for grad school questions a couple weeks ago and asked them about the decision deadline because the acceptance didn't say, and they told me they'd delayed it till June 1st because of the whole coronavirus situation. However that wasn't the department so I'd definitely make sure if you plan to wait before accepting. SF State also weirdly didn't charge a deposit or anything for accepting so Idk how ethical it is but I guess you could always just accept and cancel later...
Message me if you want to talk more! I know little about the program but I do live in SF!

Maybe a small gift card to one of their local coffee shops near them! They may not be able to use it right away, but it helps support small business too. I also liked the groceries idea!

Once I make my final decision (which is terrifying to think has to happen in a few short days), I was originally going to give them really cute handmade thank you cards.  With the current situation, I'm going to cobble together some sort of digital personalized thank you announcement/letter type thing that's printable in case they want to add it to their collection of thank yous from students and give them an IOU for some kind of gift with that school on it once I get there (since by then things should have calmed down to the point that it'd be safe to send them something).  That way, they get something now that shares the joy and gratitude and they can make it tangible if they want, but gives them something to look forward to in a few months.

This. A gift card to a favorite local coffee shop, book store, etc. is a great option, and the recipient may be able to redeem the gift now, depending on the route you take (restaurants still doing delivery/take-out, shops still doing online orders).

    Hello!
I am kinda in the same boat now. I recently emailed the department and asked for some sort of funding. They responded well to it and said that they were working diligently to help me find some in the graduate school itself. It may also be worthwhile to email the program telling them that they are your top choice, but that you would need funding in order to attend. Depending on the school, it is also possible to find a graduate assistantship in another department by emailing those faculty.

Hi! UPitt is my dream school, but from what I gathered they don't offer many merit based scholarships (their website says they don't offer GA/TAships either). Has anyone received a merit based scholarship upon admission, or know how common it is to receive one? Would love to make it work, but can't do the 60k pricetag without a little help. TIA!

Portland State! Great medical program with strong relationships to the local hospitals, etc. They also specialize in transgender voice.

My friend saw this and sent it to me immediately. I am currently deciding where to grad school (you can see my choices in my signature), but I was a Voice Performance - Opera undergrad (soprano) from Westminster Choir College, and I’m now finishing up a second degree/post bacc in SLP. My dream is to also work with singer (obviously with my background) so I have A TON of information to give you.

Feel free to send me a private message. I can give you my number and we can talk about all the options if you’re serious about medical and voice.

Case Western would be a great option for you! While their program is not specified as "Medl SLP" they don't do school internships and their curriculum does not meet the criteria for the teachers certificate. They are closely affiliated with the Cleveland Clinic (campus is pretty much completely surrounded by the CC) and most of their graduates ended up there or at U-Pitt for their CF!  They don't offer any specially tracks but during my tour I did see a voice lab so their is definitely research being done in that area!
    Best of luck!

The best place to ask this might be the Facebook group for the program.  I did the program, but I did it in a different order and number of classes per semester than recommended, so I'm probably not the right person to ask.  If you search in the group, a lot of people have asked similar question-- I used it to figure out which courses to pair by workload.
