VS-SLP2B got a reaction from bibliophile222 in BEST distance/online SLP grad school
Hi! I don’t have a lot of experience with this but I will tell you what I know.
To my knowledge there’s a difference between an online program and a distance learning program. I don’t know a whole lot about online programs but I do know information for at least one distance learning program so I’ll use that experience.
From my experience, the distance learning programs require you to be on campus certain times. The program I applied to ENMU requires you to be on campus for a minimum of one semester your first year and then distance learning for the rest. They specifically mention they are distance learning because some aspects of the program require you to come back to campus in order to successfully complete the program.
I thought this was an important distinction between online programs versus some distance programs to point out in case you weren’t aware because you mentioned the 1.5 year commitment working as a nanny.
I hope this helps!

VS-SLP2B got a reaction from jsieges in "low" GPA acceptances
I had a low GPA overall a 3.1 and in the major a 3.3. I did take a year off and got accepted for fall 2019.
For me personally, I only sent in 3 LORs. Two professors and an SLP I shadowed.
I think sending in a fourth won’t hurt your chances. Unless of course a school explicitly says they only want 3 but for the most part I don’t think they would mind having a fourth.
If you come across a school that really only wants 3 I would double check the requirements (sometimes two have to be professors) and then submit only one from your undergrad professors, and then the teacher you cover and the SLP you plan to shadow. At least this way they have an array of people who have interacted with you all in different settings.

VS-SLP2B got a reaction from Penelopepie in Should I find a new major?
Hi! So in my opinion if this is the major you truly love you should stick with it.
I was originally in a different major my freshman year too. I got a D+ in a pre req for that major and ended my first semester with a 2.1. I think if you stay consistent and make sure you get really good grades your last two years you’re overall will jump up. I went from a 2.1 to a 3.1 so with two years left for you you have time to get your GPA up.
Don’t forget a lot of schools look at your last 60 credit hours more than your overall. So if you happen to get a 3.5 to 4.0 your last two years that’ll look good on your applications. And as always when you write your personal statement you can explain why you started with a lower GPA.
You have a lot of time left so while it might not seem too promising right now I definitely think it’ll all work out for you in the end.

VS-SLP2B got a reaction from SLPrincess in Less competitive programs/GPA
What’s your overall GPA? I think you have a solid GPA in the major so that will go a long way for you. Add in that you have relevant experience and you’re definitely on the right track.
I honestly don’t think you’ll have any trouble getting into grad school but if you really want solidify your chances I would just make sure to get a really great GRE score. My advisor had told me to aim for 300 combined. (I’m not sure if this is good or not so hopefully another user has better insight here).
I think if you can do great on your GRE and also make sure you have strong letters of recommendation plus a strong personal statement you’ll get in.

Hi! Another user was asking and I have a short list compiled here:
Some might be repeats of what you have listed already. Hope this helps!

My concern with the tuition is I’ve been reading it as per semester. The example they show at the bottom left on the first page has me reading it as it being 20,000 for fall semester and then another 20,000 for spring semester which would be too much for me. Hopefully it is just me reading too much into and I can call them soon to clarify.
Thank you though!

VS-SLP2B got a reaction from bibliophile222 in Is it really worth going into debt
I agree with the above user! With a job in the field you’ll definitely be able to pay off the loans.
Personally, I think the biggest factor you should consider is if you have loans from your undergrad. I have a ton of loans from my undergrad so had I been accepted to a school with a 40k a year tuition it definitely would’ve given me pause. But if you have little to no debt from undergrad I think it’s worth it!
And don’t forget some schools offer more in terms of scholarships and grants once you’re a student. This might be able to help cut the cost at least for the second year.
Don’t give up, it’ll all be worth it in the end!

I didn’t get a chance to call today about their tuition so hopefully I’ll get the chance tomorrow.
I saw those apartments. It would definitely be a great perk to be right by the University!

YAY! Thank goodness it is going fast, I hate how most programs drag this process out for months. (I understand why they need to, but waiting is so draining.)
Glad to hear your interview went well! Out of curiosity, If you guys are accepted, will you accept their offer?

Hey everyone!
I had my interview today. Definitely laid back like @nguyen16041 mentioned so that’s again for that heads up!
I was informed though that they are hoping to have decisions out by next week. Love how fast things seem to be going with them. Best of luck everyone!!

VS-SLP2B got a reaction from futurespeechpath1 in Will getting 1 C ruin my chances for grad school?
Do you think maybe you might second guess yourself? I did this constantly for a lot of classes. During the exams I knew the answer but then I’d get in my own head and end up answering wrong.
I understand not having a lot of time to re-take a class. I ended up retaking mine during the summer session otherwise I would’ve been set back an extra semester.
I’m positive though you’ll pull through with that B. I’m rooting for you!

VS-SLP2B reacted to PNWSpeech in Who's trying again?!
Hi everyone!
No grad school for me this fall, which is okay Who else is beefing up their resumes and trying again?? I was rejected everywhere but one school last year (couldn't afford it, turned it down), was wait listed at 5 schools this year and rejected at 3, seems like we're on track to get in if I keep putting in the work haha.
Congrats to everyone who got in this year, can't wait to work with you all in the future. Logging off for a few months - what a process

VS-SLP2B reacted to Rezzy S. in Will getting 1 C ruin my chances for grad school?
I'm sorry you're in this stressful situation. You mentioned you use Quizlet. Have you tried "Learn" mode in Quizlet? I know everyone has their own style, but what works for me is to create fill in the blank Quizlet questions. The blank should be the one or two words that are the most important pieces of information in the sentence. Then in Learn mode, I select just the multiple choice and "write" options, but not the flashcard one (too easy). For example "___ is a disorder of swallowing," or "The primary motor cortex is located on the ___ lobe." If there are powerpoint slides or handouts I try to use the words almost exactly, because more often than not, questions tend to show up phrased that way on the test. I also try to really break down information. So, instead of making one card with 5 bullet points about dysarthria, I would make 5 cards. Once you get 100% on learn mode, you can go through and star what is still challenging. I also create quizlet decks as I'm reading my textbooks, because I don't want to have to read it again. When there is a really tough concept or process, I find explaining it to a friend or family member in simple terms is really helpful because it helps me find the holes in my knowledge.
Unfortunately, so much of pre-masters work seems to be rote memorization. In grad school we get to apply the critical thinking. When I first went to school I was an A/B student because I really didn't know how to study (and I wasn't that motivated), but when I went back for my CSD prerequisites, I knew I had to figure out how to be an A student and Quizlet coupled with tracking my study hours has done the trick. Good luck to you!

VS-SLP2B reacted to futurespeechpath1 in What a dilemma!
I wouldn't decline the seat at the accepted school because you really don't know where you are on the waitlist of your top 2 schools. I wouldn't take that risk unless you know for sure you'll get in the other 2 schools and really have no interest in going to the accepted school. A friend of mine got off the waitlist to her top school the day after submitting her deposit but she chose to decline the offer so you really never know.

VS-SLP2B got a reaction from musicalmini in Getting into a master's program without research or experience?
Hi! While I think internships and research experience look good on your application I wouldn’t necessarily think they are make or break for getting into grad school. If your school has any research opportunities that you can take advantage of your senior year I would at least try to get in. It’s never too late! I would also say it doesn’t exclusively have to be in communication disorders. Even experience in a related field is still experience. (I did one semester in a psychology lab. Only one because I don’t exactly like the research aspect too much) An alternative: if you still feel you need to show some experience you might be to make up for it by doing more than the minimum 25 observation hours? I hope this helps!
